Martin Luther Martin Luther dealt the symbolic blow that began the Reformation when he nailed his Ninety-Five Theses to the door of the Wittenberg Church. That document contained an attack on papal abuses and the sale of indulgences by church officials. But Luther himself saw the Reformation as something far more important than a revolt against ecclesiastical abuses. He believed it was a fight for the gospel. Luther even stated that he would have happily yielded every point of dispute to the Pope, if only the Pope had affirmed the gospel. And at the heart of the gospel, in Luther's estimation, was the doctrine of justification by faiththe teaching that Christ's own righteousness is imputed to those who believe, and on that ground alone, they are accepted by God.

    Medieval Sourcebook:
    Martin Luther (1483-1546):
The Jews and Their Lies, excerpts (1543)
At the beginning of his career it is often said that Luther was apparently sympathetic to Jewish resistance to the Catholic Church. He wrote, early in his career: The Jews are blood-relations of our Lord; if it were proper to boast of flesh and blood, the Jews belong more to Christ than we. I beg, therefore, my dear Papist, if you become tired of abusing me as a heretic, that you begin to revile me as a Jew. However, sometime before 1517, in his Letters to Spalatin , we can already see that Luther's hatred of Jews, best seen in tis 1543 letter, was not some affectation of old age, but was present very early on. Luther expected Jews to convert to his purified Christianity. When they did not, he turned violently against them. It is impossible for modern people to read the horrible passages below and not to think of the burning of synagogues in November 1938 on Krystalnacht . Nor would one wish to excuse Luther for this text. A number of points must, however, be made. The most important concerns the language used. Luther used violent and vulgar language throughout his career: he was not a man to say "manure" when he meant "shit". We do not expect religious figures to use this sort of language in the modern world, but it was not uncommon in the early 16th century. Second, although Luther's comments seem to be proto-Nazi, they are better seen as part of tradition of

It presents like no other of Luther’s writings the central thought of Christianity, the justification of the sinner for the sake of Christ’s merits alone. We have permitted in the final revision of the manuscript many a passage to stand which seemed weak and ineffectual when compared with the trumpet tones of the Latin original. But the essence of Luther’s lectures is there. May the reader accept with indulgence where in this translation we have gone too far in modernizing Luther’s expression—making him “talk American.” Large Catechism Preface to Romans Assorted Sermons By Martin Luther Martin Luther page ... 95 Stellingen Language : Dutch Language : French 95 Theses Language : Latin Preface to Romans (Portuguese) Language : Portuguese Description : From the German text, printed in: Triglot Concordia: The Symbolical Books of the Ev. Very few historical figures are as controversial as Martin Luther. His supporters call him a Protestant hero, a freedom fighter, a wise and insightful church leader. His detractors call him a heretic, an apostate, a profane ecclesiastical terrorist. Still others call him a necessary evil or the unwitting catalyst that set aflame a volatile social and ecclesiastical situation.
Luther, himself, often called himself a simple monk or a simple Christian. He marveled that a straight-forward stand of conscience had turned him into one of the most-talked-about people of his time. Yet that simple Christian and that simple stand of conscience started an ecclesiastical shock wave that changed the course of Western history. The links below will take you to a detailed, four-part timeline that traces the events in the life of Martin Luther. It is, to my knowledge, the most detailed timeline of its kind on the Web. Links within each timeline will take you to all of Luther's writing available online and to miscellaneous background information on the places and people in Luther's life. Martin Luther born Nov. 10, 1483, Eisleben, Saxony [Germany]
died Feb. 18, 1546, Eisleben German priest and scholar whose questioning of certain church practices led to the Protestant Reformation. He is one of the pivotal figures of Western civilization, as well as of Christianity. By his actions and writings he precipitated a movement that was to yield not only one of the three major theological units of Christianity (along with Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy) but was to be a seedbed for social, economic, and political thought. For further treatment of the historical context and consequences of Luther's work, see Protestantism. Luther as educator and monk Early life and education Brother Martin Luther Luther as educator and monk Brother Martin Luther Augustinian Order at Erfurt Wittenberg University Johann von Staupitz, vicar general of the German Augustinians, was very important in Luther's career as his teacher, friend, and patron. Staupitz seems to have been theologically trained as a Thomist (Realist) and was also influenced by the Augustinian tradition of his order, though his theology shows elements derived from the conflation in the late 15th century of the devotio moderna (modern devotion, a term used to describe the spirituality of the Brethren of the Common Life) with German mysticism. His attempt to revive stricter discipline and to unite the observant and conventual Augustinians in Germany led to dispute, and Luther was one of two monks chosen to go to Rome to present the appeal of some dissident houses. He made the journey, the longest of his life, probably late in 1510, and his earnestness was shocked by the levity of the Roman clergy and by the worldliness so evident in high places. The appeal failed, and Luther returned to become a loyal supporter of Staupitz.

This is just what Luther-scholar Helmar Junghans and Fortress Press have attempted to do. Comparing the advent of the personal computer to that of the printing press, Martin Treu writes in the Preface to the accompanying manual: "Today we find ourselves in the midst of a second media revolution. And once again Luther provides its contents… It is a unique pleasure to present here material about Luther's life and work in a way that speaks to both the scholarly world and the interested lay public." Unfortunately, this CD ROM biography fails miserably to live up to this claim. The program is organized around a rudimentary eight chapter biography of Luther's life, each of which is divided into three areas of interest: the biography itself accompanied by an animated film, reformation era cultural themes, and categorized presentations of material pertaining to Luther and the Reformation. The biography is very basic, with no new insights into Luther's life or thought. The animated film that accompanies it is shockingly bad, reminiscent of a poorly done episode of Monty Python's Flying Circus. The attempts to illustrate the Reformation era culture range from the strange and confusing in the section entitled "toys" to the creepy in "alchemy," where one can actually read some of the rules of magic! This is hardly what one would expect to find on a program about Luther.
