20th Century History

Mr. Lowell Goes to Asia By Kenneth Champeon Review of Percival Lowell's The Soul of the Far East Contemporary travel writers usually set out to describe a particular place. A travel writer of, say, a century ago set out to explain the place, and in the process ended up trying to explain the whole world. Travel writing and anthropology and philosophy were of a piece. Such is the glory and the folly of The Soul of the Far East , an attempt by American astronomer Percival Lowell (1855-1916) to explain China, Korea, and especially Japan to a West then increasingly fearful of the "Yellow Peril." Glory, because so many of Lowell's observations on Far Eastern life remain prescient and acute; folly, because for an outsider to generalize about such an enormity as the Far East will inevitably be seen as, at best presumptuous, in any case simplistic, at worst racist. But those were different times. To know anything about a far-off and inaccessible land, one had to rely on those few with access. Even today, the Far East is not especially known for its command of Western languages; if it does not bother to explain itself to the West, the West will do the job, however faulted, instead.

Where Lowell opened eyes to Mars and the universe
By David A. Kelly, Globe Correspondent, 2/8/2004 FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. If NASA is able to use data from the Spirit and Opportunity rovers to discover traces of water on Mars, it would have come as no surprise to Percival Lowell. The amateur astronomer and mathematician from Boston's aristocratic Lowell family was so convinced that dark thin lines he saw on Mars were artificial canals built by intelligent beings that he spent 15 years of his life studying the planet, and used part of his fortune to found in 1894 an observatory dedicated to interplanetary research. ADVERTISEMENT Today, on a high mesa called Mars Hill, just west of Flagstaff, visitors to the Lowell Observatory can sit exactly where Lowell sat more than 100 years ago and look through the same Clark telescope to get a firsthand look at Mars, neighboring planets, and star clusters. During the day, visitors can take guided tours to learn how Lowell (1855-1916) devoted the last years of his life to looking for Planet X, only to die before it was discovered at the observatory in 1930. The planet, now known as Pluto, is within 6 degrees of where Lowell had predicted. While Lowell's Martian canals and theories of extraterrestrial life didn't hold up to subsequent scientific scrutiny, his Mars research paved the way for more detailed studies of all the planets. In fact, with more than 20 full-time astronomers, Lowell Observatory is one of the largest privately operated astronomical research observatories in the world. It operates nine telescopes at two locations in Arizona and one in Australia. Both the famous 24-inch Clark refractor telescope (made in Cambridgeport, Mass.) that Lowell had built especially for observing Mars, as well as the Pluto telescope that Clyde Tombaugh used to discover that planet, are on Mars Hill and open to the public. The observatory's primary research telescopes are now about 10 miles southeast on Anderson Mesa and are typically closed to the public.

LOWELL, PERCIVAL (1855 - 1916), American astronomer, was born at Boston, Mass.. March 13. 1855 He Graduated from Harvard in 1876 and then engaged in business. He began to specialize in astronomy in 1894 and established the Lowell Observatory at Flagstaff, Ariz., for the purpose of exhaustive planetary research. He was particularly interested in observing Mars and wrote books such as Mars us the Abode of Life (1908), urging that the Martian canals represented vegetation along artificial waterways. Later the canals were photographed. Lowell became the leading authority on Mars, and maintained that all evidence pointed to the existence of life on Mars. He assiduously observed Mercury and Venus, but his greatest contribution was the announcement of a probable trans-Neptunian planet. Lowell and W. H. Pickering , working independently, predicted the position of this planet, which in 1930 was announced as Pluto. He died at Flagstaff, Ariz., Nov. 12, l916.

Lowell, Percival Lowell, Percival, , American astronomer, b. Boston, grad. Harvard, 1876; brother of Abbott Lawrence Lowell and Amy Lowell. He visited Korea and Japan, where he acted as counselor and foreign secretary to the Korean Special Mission to the United States and wrote several books about East Asia. Becoming interested in astronomy, he established (1894) the Lowell Observatory at Flagstaff, Ariz., and devoted himself to making personal observations. It was his belief that Mars was inhabited and that the striations on the Martian surface were artificial waterways. He also contended that there was a planet beyond Neptune (confirmed in 1930 by the discovery of Pluto). From 1902 he was nonresident professor of astronomy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Among his many writings on astronomy are Mars and Its Canals (1906) and The Genesis of Planets See biography by A. L. Lowell (1935).

Founder of the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, strong supporter of the theory of canals on the planet Mars, first to realize the possibility of a ninth planet beyond the orbit of Neptune. Percival Lowell was born in 1855 to a distinguished New England family. His younger brother was president of Harvard University and his sister was a well-known writer. Lowell also attended Harvard and graduated in 1876 with a distinction in mathematics. After traveling in the Far East for a number of years, he eventually developed a fond interest in astronomy. He was particularly interested in Mars and its "canals" that had supposedly been discovered by the Italian astronomer, Schaparelli. In 1894, Lowell founded the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. The observatory was ideally situated at an altitude of 7000 feet. The high altitude combined with the dry desert air made this site ideal for observing Mars, which was at that time very close to the Earth. Lowell observed the red planet for 15 years. He made intricate and detailed drawings of the planet's surface showing a complex network of intersecting lines and dark regions. Lowell believed these lines to be canals built by an advanced civilization of intelligent beings. He asserted that these canals were being used by a desperate race to transport precious water from the planet's icy poles. The dark regions were believed to be oases of green vegetation made possible by the irrigating canals. Lowell published these theories in three books:

Sus publicaciones: Mars Mars and Its Canals (1906), y

  • 79. Une Petite Histoire De L'observation Martienne : Les Canaux De Mars
Flammarion et bien sûr, Percival Lowell (1855 - 1916).
    http://www.nirgal.net/canaux.html
