French Boys Clothes during the 1850s: Pierre Lot (1850-1924)
French mariner and novelist, Pierre Lot, recalls some details of his childhood, including pinafores and curls. Lot went on to lead a rather colorful naval career. He drew upon his travels for his writing. One of his books inspired Puccini's Madame Butterfly
Childhood
I do not have extensive information on Pierre's childhood. Some information, however, is available on the clothes he wore as a boy.
Pinafores
Loti wore pinafores as a boy, both over his little boy dresses and the short pants he wore as a somewhat older boy. Lot writes about himself and a boy friend who has come over to visit:
In the month of March, as the shadows of twilight gathered, two little children were seated very close together upon a low footstooltwo little ones, between the ages of five and six, dressed in short trousers with white pinafores over them, as was the fashion of the time.
Loti in another passage he describes his play with the little girl who lived next dooracross the garden wall. She is six and Pierre is seven. They are pretending that they insects about to metamorphosis in butterfly: Do you think that you will soon be able to fly? Oh yes! I'll be flying very soon; I feel them growing in my shoulders now ...they'll soon unfold. Finally, we would wake up, stretch ourselves, and without saying anything, we conveyed by our manner our astonishment at the great transformation in our condition ...Then suddenly we begin to run lightly and nimbly in our tiny shoes; in our hands we held the corners of our pinafores which we waved as if they were wings.

Search COMMENT Mahmut Ozan Edward Tashji Sam Weems Others Pierre Loti The following is from Pierre Loti's Les Massacres d'Arménie (The Massacres of Armenia); Sema Flew translated. Thanks to geocities.com/soykirkur The author lived from (1850-1923), and this work was published in 1918. Loti travelled widely and published many books giving accounts from other lands, but his heart was very much with Turkey; he visited the Ottoman Empire in 1880, in 1900, stayed from 1903 to 1905, then again after his retirement, in 1910 and in 1913. I THE TURKS Go and try to open the eyes of some of the bourgeois back home, who, from father to son, are mesmerized into idiotic stupor, do I dare say, about the alleged ferocity of my poor friends the Turks. At the beginning of the Balkan War, was I not scoffed at, insulted, menaced enough for having taken their defense, for having dared to say that the Bulgarians, on the contrary, were cruel brutes and that their Ferdinand of Coburg (of whom all our ladies had taken fancy to and displayed his colors) was nothing but a wretched monster.) Of that one, for example, of Coburg, I am vindicated today, because he has unmistakably proven what I have tried to warn: five times traitor in ten years and firing behind the back of the Allies without warning them, I do not see how one could ask for more! As to his soldiers, almost direct descendants of the Huns, I could relate first hand of their atrocities, I could cite about the devastating reports of the international commissions sent to the scene, but no one wanted to hear. No, it were the Turks, always the Turks, the Turks that one wanted to shame, and, as Gospel truth, one accepted at home, the periodic short communiqués of the Palatinate Ferdinand, who repeated this refrain: "The Turks massacre, the Turks continue to kill and commit the worst of horrors, etc., etc."

The Deserts in Literature
The Desert
by Pierre Loti (1850-1923) Pierre Loti is the pseudonym under which the French Decadent novelist - and naval officer, artist, and acrobat - Julien Viaud wrote. , first published in Paris in 1895, is not a novel but a poetic account of the author's journey by camel caravan from Suez to Gaza by way of Sinai in 1894. As Peter Wild observes of Loti in his introductory essay in this issue, "his writing shows a gross misunderstanding of the Arab cultures he encountered, but . . . The Desert , for all the blithe liberties it takes with the facts, is an accomplished effervescence." Our excerpt is drawn from Jay Paul Minn's translation, published in 1993 by The University of Utah Press. We pick up Loti's narrative on the fourth day of what he acknowledged in his preface to be &nothing but the fantasy of a slow journey, at the pace of swaying camels in the infinite of the pink desert."
Five: Monday, February 26
Every morning you wake up in a different setting of the vast desert. You leave your tent and are surrounded by the splendor of the virginal morning. You stretch your arms and half-naked body in the cold pure air. Out on the sand, you wrap your turban and drape yourself in your white woolen veils. You get drunk on light and space. At the time of waking, you know the heady intoxication of just being able to breathe, just being alive . . .
