History of the British Sporting Art Trust by
David Fuller This year sees the celebration of the first twenty-five years of the British Sporting Art Trust. It was founded by the late Stella Walker and a small group of enthusiasts who were concerned with the continuing neglect of sporting art by both the majority of public collections and art historians.
Sir Alfred Munnings PRA The Paddock, Cheltenham, March Meeting, circa In the second half of the eighteenth century Horace Walpole considered it perfectly natural to include sporting painters in his Anecdotes of Painting in England. Indeed, one could consider him an enthusiast as he had commissioned John Wootton to paint his dog 'Patapan' and was so pleased with the result that he hung the picture in his bedchamber. Edward Edwards in his Anecdotes Of Painters, published in 1808 just two years after the death of George Stubbs and advertised as a continuation of Walpole's volumes, only mentions two minor sporting artists, Roper and-Shaw. He wrote of Roper that 'his powers as an artist were not considerable yet sufficient to satisfy the gentleman of the turf and stable.' Sadly this approach seems to have been accepted by most art historians ever since, whatever the talent of the artist. Indeed Ellis Waterhouse, who did so much to further interest in lesser known British artists, gives short shrift to all but the better known sporting artists in his Dictionary of British 18th Century Painters
