Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882)
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born in Portland, Maine, to the family of a judge. He attended Bowdoin College and was so exceptional a student that soon after graduation he was offered a Professorship of modern languages at the college. From that time on his life was a record of success. In 1843, The Spanish Student, a verse play, was published and, in 1846, the highly popular The Belfry of Bruges. At the age of forty-seven, Longfellow resigned his professorship at Harvard in order to devote himself entirely to writing. Longfellow crossed the Atlantic several times to visit the European countries and universities, to improve his knowledge of European languages and literature. He spent half a year in Heidelberg absorbed in German roman- ticism, Which'r influenced the American poet .very much. Studying the European epos as a professor of literature, Longfellow could see that his native country had no epic poetry similar to that of European nations. This inspired him to gather and carefully examine Indian folklore; then, having as a model Karelian-Finnish epos Kalevala, he wrote The Song of Hiawatha, a skilful and beautiful imitation of epic poetry. Hiawatha in 1855, and The Courtship of Miles Standish in 1858, exactly met the taste of the time.

, poet and translator. The most popular poet of his day and the first American poet to make an adequate living at his profession, Longfellow is now largely dismissed as a writer of little depth, whose work was rendered artificial and sentimental by his alliance with the privileged society of Victorian Boston and Cambridge. A professor of modern European languages first at Bowdoin College in his native Maine and, after 1836, at Harvard, he established himself as a lyric poet with Voices of the Night (1839), which contains one of his most famous poems, "The Psalm of Life." This volume was followed by Ballads and Other Poems (1841), which includes such well-known works as "The Wreck of the Hesperus," "The Skeleton in Armor," "The Village Blacksmith," and "Excelsior." His Poems on Slavery (1842), a nod to the antislavery movement prompted by his liberal Unitarian values, was dedicated to William Ellery Channing. For the most part, however, unlike John Greenleaf Whittier, he kept his poetical vocation separate from matters of conscience and wrote most often and compellingly on nostalgic and picturesque themes. In 1847 he published Evangeline, A Tale of Acadie

Outre-Mer: A Pilgrimage Beyond the Sea, written in the fashion of Washington Irving’s popular Sketch Book.
In 1834, when Harvard College offered him the Smith Professorship of French and Spanish, it was once more conditional upon further study, this time of German. So in April 1835, with his wife, Mary Storer Potter, he sailed once more to Europe. But Mary, after suffering a miscarriage, died in Rotterdam, and Longfellow took himself off to Heidelberg, trying to immerse himself in books to overcome his grief.
The following spring, when Longfellow’s passport difficulties forced him to go to the Tyrol, in Switzerland, rather than to Italy, he chanced to meet Fanny Appleton, the daughter of a prominent Beacon Hill family. Seven years later Fanny, who was initially reluctant and ten years younger than he, finally agreed to marry him, and her family made them a present of Craigie House, a few blocks down Brattle Street from Harvard Yard. Now called the Longfellow Historic Site, the house still stands. Longfellow remained at Harvard until 1854, when he resigned in order to devote himself completely to poetry. He was succeeded in his post by James Russell Lowell.
By all accounts his marriage was a happy one; yet Longfellow’s domestic life was to be the source of profound sorrow. They had six children, but two of them did not live much more than a year, and their son Charles was persistently troubled. But most tragically, in July 1861, in the eighteenth year of their marriage, Fanny’s dress caught fire in a freak accident and she died of her injuries, Longfellow having been unable to quench the flames in time to save her life. Left to raise the children himself, Longfellow now grew the full beard with which he is always pictured, quite possibly to cover the scars from his badly burned face, and for the next twenty-one years he lived as a widower in Craigie House, becoming increasingly famous with the passing years.

"Talk not of wasted affection; affection never was wasted."
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) was an American poet, one of the most popular and celebrated of his time. Born in Portland, Maine, Longfellow received his education at Bowdoin College , where he was a classmate of Nathaniel Hawthorne. After graduating in 1825, he traveled in Europe, returning to teach modern languages at Bowdoin until 1835. In 1836 he began teaching at Harvard University
After retiring from Harvard in 1854, Longfellow devoted himself almost exclusively to writing poetry. In his words: "Music is the universal language of mankind poetry their universal pastime and delight."
Longfellow's work began to gain fame with his first volume of verse, "Voices of the Night", published in 1839. Many of his written words are familiar ... his later works include 'The Wreck of the Hesperus', the well-known 'The Village Blacksmith' and 'Paul Revere's Ride', as well as his narrative poems reflecting American themes: 'Evangeline' (1847), 'The Song of Hiawatha' (1855), and 'The Courtship of Miles Standish' (1858).
Longfellow's poetry is recognized for its familiar themes, simple ideas, and clear, almost musical language. Despite the fact that many modern critics criticize his work as being overly sentimental, Longfellow has always been one of the most popular of American poets, mainly because of his simple style of writing, and because of his role in popularizing American historical themes. His writings have been described as instrumental in creating a public audience for poetry in the United States. Perhaps no other American poet has written so much and been so popular. The

Parentage.
H ENRY W ADSWORTH L ONGFELLOW , the most widely read of all the American poets and the one that has the closest hold upon the hearts of the American people, was born in Portland, Maine, February 27, 1807. His father, a graduate of Harvard College, was a leading lawyer in the city. Both parents were of the best English stock and descendants of the early settlers in New England. On his mother's side, the poet traced his ancestry to John Alden, whose peculiar courtship of the Plymouth maid, Priscilla, he was to celebrate in one of his happiest poems. It was from his mother, a lover of nature and of poetry, that Longfellow inherited his romantic taste and his literary ambition.
Youth
School life commenced early for this boy. He began to study at three, and was placed in an academy at six; at seven he was well on his way through the Latin grammar; and was reported by his master "one of the best boys we have in school. . . . His conduct last quarter was very correct and amiable." There were eight children in the home, four brothers and four sisters; Henry was the second child. Books were at hand; and out of doors there was not a little to stir the imagination of a boy in the brisk seaport town which has always been noted for both enterprise and beauty. Its picturesque features were never forgotten. In the descriptive poem

Index The most important Boston Brahmin poets were Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes , and James Russell Lowell. Longfellow, professor of modern languages at Harvard, was the best-known American poet of his day. He was responsible for the misty, ahistorical, legendary sense of the past that merged American and European traditions. He wrote three long narrative poems popularizing native legends in European meters "Evangeline" (1847), "The Song of Hiawatha" (1855), and "The Courtship of Miles Standish" (1858). Longfellow also wrote textbooks on modern languages and a travel book entitled Outre-Mer , retelling foreign legends and patterned after Washington Irving's Sketch Book . Although conventionality, sentimentality, and facile handling mar the long poems, haunting short lyrics like "The Jewish Cemetery at Newport" (1854), "My Lost Youth" (1855), and "The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls" (1880) continue to give pleasure. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow -
März 1882 in Cambridge (Massachusetts).
