GARNER, and was born in Kentucky in March 1821. Her mother was of German extraction, and the entire family were noted for robust, healthy constitution. They came to Illinois when Mrs. HUNTER was quite young. At an early age she was married to Drake LOCKWOOD; whose death left her a widow. She afterward married James A. WHITESIDE, who was a widower with quite a large family. After Mr. WHITESIDES' death she retained the fascinating charms of a beautiful young woman, and was married to Robert O. HUNTER, who died several years ago. She was the mother of six or seven children; four of whom are now living, viz: John LOCKWOOD by her first husband; S.D. WHITESIDES and Sidney McFARLAN, by her second husband, and Belle GOODRICH by her third husband. As a step-mother she reared a large family of children for her second husband.

Sisäisten tautien parantajista on käytetty eri kielissä nimityksiä, jotka vastaavat suomen kielen sanaa lääkäri. Ulkoisten tautien parantajaa useimmissa kielissä tarkoittava kirurgi johtuu kreikan kielen sanasta kheirourgos, käsityöläinen (kheir, käsi; ergon, toiminta). Englannin kielen surgeon juontuu samasta sanasta keskiranskan (cirurgien) ja vanhan englannin (surgien) kautta. Parantajien tehtäviin liittyvässä työnjaossa on ollut eräänä piirteenä, että lääkärien yhteiskunnallinen arvostus oli aikaisemmin paljon suurempi kuin kirurgien. Sen taustalla oli ainakin osittain perinne, jonka mukaan sisäisten tautien hoitajat olivat alun perin pappeihin verrattavia henkilöitä. Kirurgit sen sijaan rinnastettiin käsityöläistaustansa vuoksi tavalliseen kansaan. Jako sisäisiä tauteja hoitaviin lääkäreihin ja ulkoisia tauteja hoitaviin kirurgeihin ei ole ollut ehdoton. Lääkärit saivat usein oppia eräitä kirurgisia taitoja, erityisesti murtumien hoitoa ja sijoiltaan menneiden jäsenten paikoilleen laittoa.
