Freedom of thought and the right to private judgment, in matters of conscience, driven from every corner of the earth, direct their course to this happy country as their last asylum. Let us cherish the noble guests, and shelter them under the wings of universal toleration.
John Adams
U.S. President
The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemmorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illustrations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forevermore. Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide. The Revolution was effected before the War commenced. The Revolution was in the minds and hearts of the people; a change in their religious sentiments of their duties and obligations. . . . This radical change in the principles, opinions, sentiments, and affections of the people, was the real American Revolution.

Historical note:
Rowland "Roy" Hazard III (1881-1945) was the eldest of five children of woolen magnate Rowland Gibson Hazard II (1855-1918) and Mary Pierrepont Bushnell (1859-1936). He was a graduate of the Taft School in Waterbury, Conn., and of Yale University, class of 1903. He then worked briefly for the Solvay Process Company in Syracuse, N.Y., a family business. After 1907, he was involved with the Peace Dale Manufacturing Company, the family's flagship woolen mill in South Kingstown, R.I., eventually becoming treasurer. This company was sold outside the family after the death of Rowland G. Hazard II in 1918. While in Africa, Hazard contracted a tropical illness, and spent several months convalescing in New Mexico. In the town of La Luz, he discovered large deposits of high-grade clay, purchased land, and formed the Aguadero Corporation to market pottery. He formed Rowland Third Inc. as a personal holding company in 1930, registered in the state of Vermont. Soon afterward, two new companies were spun off from the Aguadero Corporation: Timonel Farms, and the La Luz Clay Products Company. Though none of these New Mexico companies were as successful as hoped for, they remained active for the remainder of Hazard's life. Hazard returned to Rhode Island in 1931, and acquired one of the family homes, "Druid's Dream" in Narragansett. He also kept residences intermittently at 52nd Street and other addresses in Manhattan; in La Luz, New Mexico; at "Ladyhill" in Shaftsbury, Vermont; and at "Sugarbush" in Glastonbury, Vermont. In the 1930s, he commercially marketed maple syrup that had been tapped at his Vermont vacation home. He incorporated a real estate company, the What Cheer Realty Company, in 1932 (none of the records for What Cheer survive, but reference can be found in the Rowland Third Inc. records).

Alain Ducasse , the renowned French chef, has created a new Champagne labelPaul Drouet. The wine is already being sold at his two restaurants, the eponymous Alain Ducasse in Paris and Louis XV in Monte Carlo, and it will soon go into worldwide distribution. Ducasse buys the still wine from Marne et Champagne, the second-biggest Champagne house, and he oversees its transformation into sparkling wine. "The Champagne is in a very pure, modern style, one that will be exported all over the world and can age for 2 to 3 years in a private cellar," said Ducasse. Although a price has not yet been fixed, Ducasse expects it to sell in the same range as well-known non-vintage brands. "I wanted to create a Champagne that reflects my tastes and will reflect the style and food in my restaurants," Ducasse explained. Steven Levine , formerly of Zoë in New York City, has moved his eclectic style of cooking to the wine-country town of Sonoma, Calif. Levine and his wife

Henry Charles Lea Papers - Scope and Content
Correspondence According to the Lea's biographer, Sculley Bradley, Lea destroyed his early correspondence (prior to 1860). There is some significant correspondence during the Civil War, but the bulk of correspondence in these files dates from 1868 to 1909. Very little material in these papers is revealing of Lea's personal life or family relations. One very early letter (undated, ca. 1837) was written by Lea to his parents while he and his brother Carey were staying with relatives; there also is a single page from a letter that appears to be from his mother, Frances Anne Carey Lea, to Lea in 1853. An interesting group of ten items from his father, Isaac, to Henry C. Lea were written while Henry was sailing on his yacht through New England waters during the summer of 1881; these letters describe the assassination of President Garfield. Presidents Rutherford B. Hayes, James Garfield, and Theodore Roosevelt were among Lea's correspondents, and there is a letter from Woodrow Wilson addressed to Arthur H. Lea, written when Wilson was president of Princeton University. Other United States officials to whom Lea wrote include James M. Beck (1861-1936), solicitor general of the United States; Dorman B. Eaton (1823-1899) of the U.S. Civil Service Commission, who drafted the Pendleton Act of 1883; and Noah H. Swayne of the United States Supreme Court. Lea corresponded with the following who were or later became mayors of Philadelphia: Rudolph Blankenburg (1843-1918); Edwin H. Fitler; Daniel M. Fox; Alexander Henry (1823-1883); W. S. Stokely, and John Weaver. Other prominent Philadelphians among his correspondents are: John J. Ridgway, Jr.; Joseph Wharton (1826-1909); William Sellers (1824-1905); Horace Howard Furness (1833-1912); and his father, the Rev. William H. Furness (1802-1896). Lea's papers are a source of information about the Wistar Association, open only to members of the American Philosophical Society, and the Wistar Party, of which Lea was dean for many years.
