Henry Cabot Lodge
Henry Cabot Lodge, a driving force in American foreign policy in the early 20th century, was born into one of Massachusetts’ most prominent families. The great grandson of the famed merchant and politician, George Cabot, young Lodge was educated at Dixwell’s Latin School and graduated from Harvard in 1871. He then spent a year touring Europe, but returned to Harvard for a law degree in 1874 and a Ph.D. in political science in 1876. During his studies, he was an assistant editor of the North American Review and later co-edited the International Review Lodge began his political career in 1880 when he was elected to the Massachusetts legislature for a single term. He failed in his first attempt for a seat in Congress, but succeeded in 1886 and was recognized for his efforts to support civil service reform and the protection of voting rights in the South. During these years, Lodge continued his scholarly activities. He published biographies, Alexander Hamilton Daniel Webster (1883) and George Washington (1889), for the widely read

Born in Boston, Henry Cabot Lodge lived in a world of intellectual, political, and financial power. He earned the first Ph.D in political science awarded by Harvard, and a degree from its law school before joining his mentor Henry Adams as editor of the North American Review i n 1887. He won election to the US Senate in 1893, where he would serve his remaining thirty-one years.Close friends with Theodore Roosevelt, he shared the President's desire to see the United States play a larger role in world affairs. He advocated fighting the Spanish-American war, which raised then Assistant Secretary of the Navy Roosevelt's Presidential prospects.
Lodge is best remembered for spearheading Senate blockage of American membership in the League of Nations on the grounds that its covenant threatened American sovereignty. Thus, this man who had prepared his country for international leadership, ironically came to be remembered as an isolationist.

Henry Cabot Lodge, 1850-1924, was a Harvard graduate and a historian in his younger years. At age 36, he successfully ran for the House of Representatives, and by 1893, he was in the Senate. He was a republican, and was the leader of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during WWI and after. He and other isolationist republicans helped to stop the Treaty of Versailles from being ratified in the USA, thus preventing the country from joining the League of Nations. He spoke out greatly against Wilson at this time, questioning his stance on America’s international position. Lodge also was an author, writing many historical books, and other books which dealt with the senate and it’s decisions. Henry Cabot Lodge was still serving in the Senate at the time of his death in 1924. His grandson, Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. went on to serve in the Senate and become very prominent. home
