Livingstone,David
Missionary to Africa
David Livingstone was born at Blantyre, eight miles south of Glasgow, on 19 March 1813. He was born in a single apartment home on the banks of the Clyde River. At the age of ten, like other children of the village, he was put to work in the mills, which took up his whole day from six in the morning and did not release him till about eight at night. Then, with other children employed in the mills, he had to attend night school. Most were so tired after school that they could do little but sleep, but David studied hard and would continue with his lessons far into the night. Every spare moment, in the factory or out, he studied books and nature. As a child his dream was to be a medical missionary to China and spread the word.
On November 10, 1871, Stanley's caravan, loaded with supplies, reached Ujiji, Africa. A thin, frail Livingstone stepped out to meet him as Stanley bowed, took off his hat, and spoke the now famous words, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume." Livingstone and Stanley began a friendship and after Livingstone's death it was Stanley who continued with Livingstone's works. David Livingstone died in Africa on April 30, 1873, after a long illness. His body was sent back to England where he was buried in Westminster Abbey. HOME FAQ COURSES ESSAYS ...

C. S. Lewis  (1898-1963)
     C. S. 'Jack' Lewis was not the kindly professor he created for The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe . He sought truth by slashing dialectics taught him by his old tutor Kirkpatrick. He was merciless in debates. At Oxford University Jack Lewis was much feared by opponents. Some feared him so much - like the geneticist and avowed atheist J. B. S. Haldane - that they fled an encounter with Jack. Bitter losers characterized Jack as a loudmouthed, beefy, red-faced butcher! In fact he had a photographic memory, a mind trained in logic that raced far ahead of his usual opposition and a deep, booming voice. Jack's fights for truth were utterly sincere. In his early days his only acceptable companions were those who could give him a good scrap. They not only had to defend their opinions with logic, but with feeling. Yet, even brilliant, passionate dialectics was not enough; any who showed flippancy or cynicism Jack dismissed as lightweights. Those who advanced only anecdotes or mere disjointed facts he held in the lowest regard. Few people met his stringent standards.
His most worthy opponent for many years was Owen Barfield. Though brilliant and creative J. R. R. Tolkien was too emotional to acquit himself well in Jack's favorite kind of fight. But as Jack mellowed after his conversion to Christianity he accepted less gifted fighters like Tolkien. Slashing repartee had almost disappeared from Jack's life by 1952. He was well past 50 and had never married. Then into his life came the American divorcee Joy Davidman. To Jack's delight she was not only a writer like himself but as merciless a debater as Owen Barfield! In

LIVINGSTONE, DAVID The Lady Nyassa was taken to the Rovuma. Up this river Livingstone managed to steam 156 m., but farther progress was arrested by rocks. Returning to the Zambezi in the beginning of 1863, he found that the desolation caused by the slave trade was more horrible and widespread than ever. It was clear that the Portuguese officials were themselves at the bottom of the traffic. Kirk and Charles Livingstone being compelled to return to England on account of their health, the doctor resolved once more to visit the lake, and proceeded some distance up the west side and then north-west as far as the watershed that separates the Loangwa from the rivers that run into the lake. Meanwhile a letter was received from Earl Russell recalling the expedition by the end of the year. In the end of April 1864 Livingstone reached Zanzibar in the Lady Nyassa, and on the 23rd of July Livingstone arrived in England. He was naturally disappointed with the comparative failure of this expedition. Still the geographical results, though not in extent to be compared to those of his first and his final expeditions, were of high importance, as were those in various departments of science, and he had unknowingly laid the foundations of the British protectorate of Nyasaland. Details will be found in his Narrative of an Expedition to the Zambesi and its Tributaries, published in 1865. March 19 ~  Never to Stop
"I determined n e v e r to stop until I h a d come to the end and achieved m y purpose ~ David Livingstone Missionary and African explorer Dr. David Livingstone (1813-1873) was born on this day in Blantyre, Scotland . With a passion for faith , hard work , and education , he earned a medical degree then joined the London Missionary Society in 1838. He arrived in Cape Town in 1841. With travels of nearly one-third of Africa's interior, the courageous explorer became the first European to cross the continent in an amazing trek from west to east coasts (1853-1856). "I will go anywhere as long as it is forward," he said. Crossing the difficult Kalahari desert, he discovered Lake Ngami in 1849 and the Zambezi River in 1851. In 1855, he discovered the great Victoria Falls, which the natives called "Smoke with Thunders." With characteristic patriotism , Livingstone christened the landmark for his queen. "I shall open up a path into the interior or perish," he said. Livingstone documented his experiences with the book Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa (1857). By that

MISSIONARY TRAVELS
(Hoofstuk 1)
