by Kathryn VanSpanckeren
The Rise of Realism: 1860-1914: Vachel Lindsay (1879-1931)
Index Vachel Lindsay was a celebrant of small-town midwestern populism and creator of strong, rhythmic poetry designed to be declaimed aloud. His work forms a curious link between the popular, or folk, forms of poetry, such as Christian gospel songs and vaudeville (popular theater) on the one hand, and advanced modernist poetics on the other. An extremely popular public reader in his day, Lindsay's readings prefigure "Beat" poetry readings of the post-World War II era that were accompanied by jazz. To popularize poetry, Lindsay developed what he called a "higher vaudeville," using music and strong rhythm. Racist by today's standards, his famous poem "The Congo" (1914) celebrates the history of Africans by mingling jazz, poetry, music, and chanting. At the same time, he immortalized such figures on the American landscape as Abraham Lincoln ("Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight") and John Chapman ("Johnny Appleseed"), often blending facts with myth.

The Vachel Lindsay Home State Historic Site and National Historic Landmark is a two-story, twelve-room house where the poet Lindsay was born in 1879 and died in 1931. The land where the house sits was purchased in 1824, eight years before the town of Springfield was incorporated. A simple structure, it was built circa 1850 by Henry Dresser, who also designed and built the home Abraham Lincoln and his family resided in during their time in Springfield.
In 1990, the transfer took place and the Vachel Lindsay House became a state-owned historic site under the auspices of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. The house remained open for a short time before it was closed again for evaluation and restoration.
Born Nicholas Vachel Lindsay on November 10, 1879 in Springfield, Illinois, he was the second of six children and the only son of Dr. Vachel Thomas Lindsay and Esther Catharine Frazee Lindsay. His physician father and mother were devout Christians, members of the First Christian Church in Springfield where Dr. Lindsay was an elder and Mrs. Lindsay taught the adult Sunday School class.

    VACHEL LINDSAY
V achel Lindsay, together with Langston Hughes, helped define the school of Jazz Poetry in the first decades of the 20th century. So-called because of the syncopated or bluesy rhythms the verse borrowed from the music of the era, the tradition evolved with Hughes into a practice of pitching verse in conjunction with musicians. This style of poetry performance, refined throughout the century, culminated in the famous recordings of the Beat Generation. Born in Springfield, IL, in 1879, Nicholas Vachel Lindsay turned an early desire to become a missionary into a lifelong crusade for the arts. A painter as well as a poet, Lindsay shared William Blake's visionary bent. Exposed to the Revivalist tradition of the YMCA, camp meetings and evangelical preaching as a child, he renounced the religious basis of this tradition but retained its poetic spirit. Leaving New York City's Art Students League where he had lived the bohemian life and studied from 1904-1909, he tramped America with his Gospel of Beautyilluminated poems using complex allegorical visual iconography and verbal images which he distributed to his listeners. Once established as a poet, he toured the country, using the cadences of an itinerant preacher to mesmerize crowds in his recitations of his incantatory ballads like THE CONGO or GENERAL WILLIAM BOOTH ENTERS INTO HEAVEN.
Listen to "General Booth Enters Into Heaven" in the Songbook The Booth poem, which became the centerpiece for Lindsay's first published volume, was conceived in 1912 as a response to newspaper accounts of the founder of the Salvation Army's death on August 12 of that year. His fascination with the great evangelical preacher stemmed in part from his revivalist youth, but may also have been spurred by the heyday of great Army preachers, among them Evangeline Booth, who commanded the American Army from 1904-1934 and whom he would have had innumerable occasions to hear in his New York student days, as well as by two stays at Salvation Army shelters during his mendicant period.

WHAT THE SEXTON SAID by: Vachel Lindsay (1879-1931)
OUR dust will be upon the wind
      Within some certain years,
Though you be sealed in lead to-day
      Amid the country's tears.
      When this idyllic churchyard
      Becomes the heart of town,
The place to build garage or inn,
      They'll throw your tombstone down.
Your name so dim, so long outworn,
Your bones so near to earth,
Your sturdy kindred dead and gone,
How should men know your worth?
So read upon the runic moon
      Man's epitaph, deep-writ.
It says the world is one great grave.
For names it cares no whit.
It tells the folk to live in peace,
And still, in peace, to die.
At least, so speaks the moon to me,
      The tombstone of the sky.

THE SPIDER AND THE GHOST OF THE FLY by: Vachel Lindsay (1879-1931)
      NCE I loved a spider
When I was born a fly,
      A velvet-footed spider
      With a gown of rainbow-dye.
She ate my wings and gloated.
She bound me with a hair.
She drove me to her parlor
      Above her winding stair.
      To educate young spiders
      She took me all apart.
My ghost came back to haunt her.
I saw her eat my heart.
