Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States. He was one of the greatest leaders in the world. He was a postmaster, lawyer, and President of the United States. Top of Page A Nation Divided
In the mid-1800's, the United States had been a country for less than 90 years and was facing difficult times. The issue of slavery was dividing the nation. The Southern states were in favor of slavery, and the Northern states wanted to abolish or end slavery. Top of Page The Lincoln-Douglas Debates
In 1858, Abe ran for the U.S. Senate. He wanted to end slavery. His opponent for the Senate was Stephen A. Douglas. The two candidates engaged in seven debates during the election. These debates are known as the Lincoln-Douglas Debates. Abe lost the election, but gained a national reputation.

    Notes on Life and Works
Abraham Lincoln was born 12 February 1809 near Hodgenville, Kentucky, and grew up with little formal schooling. Self-educated, he was eventually elected to the Illinois House of Representatives and served from 1834 to 1842. Admitted to the bar in 1836, Lincoln used law as a gateway into politics, which dominated his life. He became Vice-Presidential candidate for the (new) Republic Party in 1856 and was elected 16th President of the United States, serving from 1861 to his assassination by John Wilkes Booth in Washington on April 15, 1865. Lincoln's slave emancipation principles led to the civil war between the North and the South in 1861. He was survived by his wife Mary Todd, whom he married in 1842 in Springfield, Illinois, and one son.

"Labor is prior to, and independent of, capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration."
Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), U.S. president. speech, Dec. 3, 1861. First Annual Message to Congress, Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln, vol. 5, ed. Roy P. Basler (1953). "I am anxious to afford some alleviation of your present distress. Perfect relief is not possible, except with time. You can not now realize that you will ever feel better. Is not this so? And yet it is a mistake. You are sure to be happy again. To know this, which is certainly true, will make you some less miserable now. I have had experience enough to know what I say; and you need only to believe it, to feel better at once. The memory of your dear Father, instead of an agony, will yet be a sad, sweet feeling in your heart, of a purer, and holier sort than you have ever known before."

    Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in a log cabin near Hodgenville, Kentucky. He and his parents, Tom and Nancy , lived there during his early childhood days before moving to Indiana. Abraham was nine when his mother died; a year later his father remarried. When he was 21 years old, Lincoln and his family moved to Macon County, Illinois . In New Salem, his adopted home for six years, he worked and studied, learned to be a surveyor, studied law, and worked on a steamboat as an assistant. At the urging of his friends, Lincoln decided to enter politics. His first run at state politics was unsuccessful. In 1834, Abe tried again and was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in the state capital of Vandalia. One man who saw him making a speech asked, "Can't the party raise any better material than that?" But after hearing Abe's speech the man was amazed that "he knew more than all the other candidates put together." Lincoln became well-known for his quick wit and humor Lincoln then moved to Springfield in 1837 when it became the new state capital and worked there as a lawyer and state legislator. Five years later he married Mary Todd and they had four children.

    Abraham Lincoln Quotes
You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time. The true rule in determining to embrace or reject anything is not whether it have any evil in it, but whether it have more of evil than of good. There are few things wholly evil or wholly good. I care not much for a man's religion whose dog and cat are not the better for it. No matter how much cats fight, there always seems to be plenty of kittens. When I do good, I feel good. When I do bad, I feel bad. That's my religion. We trust, sir, that God is on our side. It is more important to know that we are on God's side. Common-looking people are the best in the world: that is the reason the lord makes so many of them. It is said an Eastern monarch once charged his wise men to invent him a sentence to be ever in view, and which should be true and appropriate in all times and situations. They presented him the words: "And this, too, shall pass away." How much it expresses! How chastening in the hour of pride! How consoling in the depths of affliction! Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power.
