    Classroom Issues and Strategies
    To give the meanings back to the words, we need to (1) restore vividly the historical context in which these speeches were composed and to which they were addressed, and (2) read slowly and explicate together as we go. What precedents and values is he calling to his listeners' minds? What does he ask them to focus on? What doesn't he choose to talk about, refer to, or insinuate?
    Major Themes, Historical Perspectives, and Personal Issues
    I've tried to canvass these in the headnote. It's important that the students know, for example, that the battle of Gettysburg was in many respects the turning point in the Civil War. It was the farthest advance the Confederate forces were to make. In addition, it was the bloodiest and most costly battle (in sheer number of lives lost on both sides) in what was a devastatingly bloody war (over 600,000 battle casualties over four years, with another million and more dead from disease via infected wounds, malnutrition, inadequate medical attention). Students should know something of how Lincoln was perceived in the North and South during his presidency, the polarized forces with which he had to contend even among the nonseceding members of the Union, his concern for maintaining the loyalty of slave-holding border states and holding out hope for reunion with the Confederate states, in tension with the pressure he felt from the radical Republicans who urged the emancipation of slaves by executive proclamation, and so forth. This kind of information helps us to interpret both of the Lincoln documents in our selection.

    Abraham Lincoln 16.º Presidente dos Estados Unidos da América. Preservou a União durante a Guerra Civil tendo conseguido a emancipação dos escravos. Nasceu perto de Hodgenville, Kentucky, nos E.U.A. em 12 de Fevereiro de 1809;
    morreu assassinado em Washington, em 15 de Abril de 1865. Filho de um agricultor de ascendência inglesa, vivendo no Kentucky, um dos primeiros Estados criados após a independência da Grã-Bretanha (1792), na fronteira ocidental do país, Lincoln passou a maior parte da sua infância no território de Indiana, para onde a família se tinha deslocado em finais de 1816, devido a um processo judicial de contestação da propriedade que o pai possuia. A mãe morreu no Outono de 1818, tendo Lincoln e a irmã sido educados pela madrasta, Sarah Bush Johnston, mãe de 2 raparigas e um rapaz, com quem o pai se casou no princípio do Inverno de 1819. Lincoln, filho de pais iletrados, teve uma educação muito pouco cuidada, frequentando a escola muito esporadicamente mas que, como o próprio afirmava, quando chegou à idade adulta, lhe permitia ler e escrever e fazer algumas contas básicas. O começo da profissão de advogado foi difícil e muito trabalhosa, tendo de deambular pelo Estado para conseguir clientes. Com o aparecimento dos caminhos de ferro, Lincoln tornou-se advogado da Illinois Central Railroad, tendo defendido a companhia com sucesso, o que lhe deu uma real estabilidade financeira. Tornou-se um advogado reconhecido, tendo também ganho um célebre processo do foro criminal, onde defendeu o seu cliente da acusação de assassínio com a ajuda de um Almanaque que provava que, sendo a noite do crime de Lua Nova, e por isso muito escura, a testemunha do crime não podia ter presenciado o crime claramente.

He lead the country through a difficult time where the future of the Union was threatened and till today he is remembered as the one who saved the nation. He was born on the 12 th of February 1809 as the son of a poor settlers family, in some American schoolbooks the fact is stressed, that his family did not own a house, so he was actually born in one room log which was open on the front side. According to the circumstances he had to help on the families farm and only briefly attended school.

    *LINCOLN, ABRAHAM was born near Hodgenville, Kentucky, on February 12, 1809. In 1816, the Lincoln family moved to Indiana settling near Little Pigeon Creek in Perry (now Spencer) County. Two years later, Abraham Lincoln's mother died and his father married a woman to whom Lincoln later referred as his "angel" mother. Lincoln attended a formal school for only a few months but acquired knowledge through the reading of books. The family moved to New Salem, Illinois, in 1830 where he obtained a job as a store clerk and the local postmaster.
