The Prelinger Collection at the Library of Congress
FREQUENTLY (AND LIKELY TO BE) ASKED QUESTIONS
The Library of Congress has acquired the film collection held until now by Prelinger Archives . The acquisition and movement of materials is currently in progress (August 2002). This FAQ is intended to answer basic questions about the acquisition. It's written by Rick Prelinger, reflects only his and Prelinger Archives' perspectives and opinions, and is not a statement by or on behalf of the Library of Congress. What is the background of this acquisition? Organized in late 1982, Prelinger Archives has grown to include approximately 48,000 completed films and over 30,000 cans of unedited footage. In the 1990s, Rick began searching for a permanent home for the collection, acting out of his conviction that cultural assets were ultimately better off residing in public archives than in private or for-profit collections. He also felt that a small company such as Prelinger Archives wasn't fully able to mobilize the resources necessary to properly care for, catalog and preserve a large and continually growing collection (currently over 140,000 cans and reels of film). Discussions began with the Library of Congress and culminated in a handshake agreement in February 2002, followed by a written agreement in August 2002. On Monday, August 12, contract movers for the Library began moving the films from Prelinger's main storage facility, located in New York's historic wholesale meat market district, where the archives have been held since 1985. Material held in Kansas City was moved one week later, and a small amount of film remaining in California, New Jersey, and New York will be moved in the autumn. Paper records, indexes and an updated database of much of the collection will also be given to the Library at that time.

INTRODUCTION URUGUAY USED TO BE KNOWN as the "Switzerland of South America," but clearly not because of any geographical similarity. Although it is the second smallest country in South America (after Suriname), Uruguay is more than four times larger than landlocked Switzerland, and its highest peak is only 501 meters. Rather, the analogy was made because Uruguay enjoyed other Swiss-like attributes. It was a peaceful, conservative country with a bountiful, livestock-based economy. It was also home to South America's first social democracy; a cradle-to-grave welfare system; and a largely urban, homogeneous, and relatively well- educated population. A political slogan of the 1940s proudly boasted, "There's no place like Uruguay." Beginning with the prolonged stagnation of their country's industrial and livestock sectors in the mid-1950s, however, Uruguayans began losing their economic well-being, civility, and tranquillity. By the late 1960s, Uruguay was suffering from high inflation and public deficits and was governed by an authoritarian president, instead of by the former revolving collegial executive (

Early Life
Vaudeville The Bill Moving On ... Faces of Bob Hope Bob Hope was among the 20,000 vaudeville performers working in the 1920s. Many of these performers were, like Hope, recent immigrants to America who saw a vaudeville career as one of the few ways to succeed as a "foreigner" in America. Throughout his extraordinary professional career of nearly seventy years, Bob Hope practiced the arts he learned in vaudeville and perpetuated variety entertainment traditions in stage musical comedy, motion pictures, radio, television, and the live appearances he made around the world in support of American armed forces. Today, the stage variety show is mostly a memory but its influence is pervasive thanks to the long and rich careers of vaudeville veterans like Bob Hope. Former Librarian of Congress Honored BY YVONNE FRENCH Photo by Paul Hogroian
“Dan’s writings lift the reader up to a higher standard and direct us outward to look at aspects of life that we may have overlooked before—or we may not have seen as part of history, law, language, folklore, advertising. … He saw the Library of Congress as a multimedia encyclopedia,” said current Librarian James H. Billington. “He comes as close as anyone living to being its encyclopedist. It is entirely fitting as our Bicentennial year draws to a close that we hail this eloquent contributor to, and statesman of, the world of the book.” Dr. Billington is the 13th Librarian of Congress; Dr. Boorstin was the 12th. Dr. Boorstin described the satisfaction he gained from writing the works included in the bibliography. “For me, the task of the historian is not to chisel a personal or definitive view of the past on granite. Rather, it is to see the iridescence of the past, fully aware that it will have a new and unsuspected iridescence in the future.” The event marked the publication by Greenwood Press of Daniel J. Boorstin: A Comprehensive and Selectively Annotated Bibliography

Credits Few figures have had so decisive and fundamental an influence on the course of modern cultural history as Sigmund Freud. Yet few figures also have inspired such sustained controversy and intense debate. Freud's legacy continues to be hotly contested, as demonstrated by the controversy attracted by this exhibition even before its opening. Our notions of identity, memory, childhood, sexuality, and, most generally, of meaning have been shaped in relation toand often in opposition toFreud's work. The exhibition examines Freud's life and his key ideas and their effect upon the twentieth century. Exhibitions Home Page Library of Congress Home Page Library of Congress
