Labor-Related Films in the Library of Congress Collection
Jump to: Introduction Notes on the Entries List of Films
Introduction
The original intent of this project was to compile a list of labor history documentaries in the collection of the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress. In the course of my research, the parameters of the list gradually expanded as a result of suggestions from book and journal sources, and film bibliographies from labor history courses. Many of these works were not documentaries, though they were relevant to social and political issues in the labor history. The resulting list is a broad collection of labor-related films. With a few exceptions, it has been limited to non-feature films about American labor history. The majority of these films represent pro-labor, pro-union, and sometimes pro-radical viewpoints, as well as few anti-union selections, which are noted as such. There are several educational selections, some specifically about labor and some social histories of the first three decades of the twentieth century (roughly the Progressive Era through the New Deal). A few of the films relate to the struggle of farmers and to the Nonpartisan League. There are several union- produced propaganda films included which are of note because they reflect the political philosophies of the time in which they were made (mostly in the 1950s), as well as portraying working conditions of the time.

... An American Ballroom Companion presents a collection of over two hundred social dance manuals at the Library of Congress. The list begins with a rare late fifteenth-century source, Les basses danses de Marguerite d'Autriche (c.1490) and ends with Ella Gardner's 1929 Public dance halls, their regulation and place in the recreation of adolescents . Along with dance instruction manuals, this online presentation also includes a significant number of antidance manuals, histories, treatises on etiquette, and items from other conceptual categories . Many of the manuals also provide historical information on theatrical dance. All illuminate the manner in which people have joyfully expressed themselves as they dance for and with one another. The mission of the Library of Congress is to make its resources available and useful to Congress and the American people and to sustain and preserve a universal collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations. The goal of the Library's National Digital Library Program is to offer broad public access to a wide range of historical and cultural documents as a contribution to education and lifelong learning. The Library of Congress presents these documents as part of the record of the past. These primary historical documents reflect the attitudes, perspectives, and beliefs of different times. The Library of Congress does not endorse the views expressed in these collections, which may contain materials offensive to some readers.

Library of Congress Classification System
The Library of Congress Classification System (LC System) is used to organize books in many academic and university libraries throughout the United States and world. The interdisciplinary nature of geography requires the use of material from a variety of subject areas. This outline, which is part of the Geography site at The Mining Company should assist you to locate areas of the library to begin your research. The LC System organizes material in libraries according to twenty-one branches of knowledge. The 21 categories (labeled A-Z except I,O,W,X and Y) are further divided by adding one or two additional letters and a set of numbers. A - General Works B - Philosophy, Psychology, Religion

Preservation
  • How should I store my books?
  • How should I display documents or works of art on paper?
  • Can I save wet books? What if my books are moldy?
  • How can I get rid of the smell of mildew in my books? ...
  • What If I have other questions about preservation of library and archives materials?
  • How should I store my books? Store books out of direct sunlight and where air can circulate freely. Store them away from windows and don't put them on shelves against outside walls. Store books on flat, smooth shelves that are strong enough to support their weight. Ideally, books should not be in contact with unsealed wood because it can release damaging acidic vapors. Line shelves with acid free board to prevent this problem. Stand books vertically side by side. Keep similar sizes together: small books next to small books, and large books next to large books. Use bookends to keep the books from falling over, and be sure they are high enough to support the books completely. Avoid storing books in an attic or basement because attics get too hot and basements get too damp. Both are also subject to rapid changes in temperature and humidity levels. Keep books out from under plumbing and water pipes; water damage from these sources is all too common.

    71. History Of Germany
From the origin of the Germanic tribes to 1990. Taken from the Area Handbook of the US Library of Congress.
    http://home.carolina.rr.com/wormold/germany/
    History of Germany
The first significant written account of Germany's inhabitants is Germania, written about A.D. 98 by the Roman historian Tacitus. The Germanic tribes he describes are believed to have come from Scandinavia to Germany about 100 B.C., perhaps induced to migrate by overpopulation. The Germanic tribes living to the west of the Rhine River and south of the Main River were soon subdued by the Romans and incorporated into the Roman Empire. Tribes living to the east and north of these rivers remained free but had more or less friendly relations with the Romans for several centuries. Beginning in the fourth century A.D., new westward migrations of eastern peoples caused the Germanic tribes to move into the Roman Empire, which by the late fifth century ceased to exist. One of the largest Germanic tribes, the Franks, came to control the territory that was to become France and much of what is now western Germany and Italy. In A.D. 800 their ruler, Charlemagne, was crowned in Rome by the pope as emperor of all of this territory. Because of its vastness, Charlemagne's empire split into three kingdoms within two generations, the inhabitants of the West Frankish Kingdom speaking an early form of French and those in the East Frankish Kingdom speaking an early form of German. The tribes of the eastern kingdomFranconians, Saxons, Bavarians, Swabians, and several otherswere ruled by descendants of Charlemagne until 911, when they elected a Franconian, Conrad I, to be their king. Some historians regard Conrad's election as the beginning of what can properly be considered German history.

Stanford University Libraries The Library of Congress subject headings have been evolving to cover the wider array of materials published on environmental topics such as pollution, toxic waste, ecotourism, ecofeminism, and other aspects of the human effects on the natural world. LC headings have been widely criticized in the past for using outdated and arcane terminology and being slow to establish new headings even when a topic has considerable literature. That has changed in recent years, and LC has recently been more willing to create subject headings while a topic is still new and change outdated terminology to more current forms.
