The bulk of the collection consists of portrait photographs of celebrities, including many figures from the Harlem Renaissance. A much smaller portion of the collection is an assortment of American landscapes. The mission of the Library of Congress is to make its resources available and useful to Congress and the American people and to sustain and preserve a universal collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations. The goal of the Library's National Digital Library Program is to offer broad public access to a wide range of historical and cultural documents as a contribution to education and lifelong learning. The Library of Congress presents these documents as part of the record of the past. These primary historical documents reflect the attitudes, perspectives, and beliefs of different times. Using Library of Congress Subject Headings When you search the online catalog by subject , you must use a Library of Congress Subject Heading (LCSH). The library assigns subject headings to all items listed in the online catalog. This makes it easy to find books on the same or similar topics. Subject headings are listed in a five-volume manual called simply Library of Congress Subject Headings ("the big red books"). Sometimes you can guess the appropriate subject headings, but it's wise to check the manual to be sure. Reference librarians can help you, too. If you are searching for medical topics, use a Medical Subject Heading (MeSH). The MeSH manual is available at the Medical Center Library Keyword searching can provide
