Winston Tabb, associate librarian for library services at the Library of Congress, said: “For the Library, this is a major step that represents an innovative method for expanding our collection of digital research tools and for improving access, while reducing our costs. UMI’s digital dissertations program also will enable us to provide access to the increasing number of newly created dissertations that are available online in electronic form.” “The Library’s agreement with UMI affirms both the historical value and growing importance of UMI’s vast archive of doctoral dissertations and master’s theses in today’s knowledge economy,” said Dan Arbour, vice president of UMI’s Library Division. “UMI’s archives, in both digital and microfilm formats, will play a role in helping the Library fulfill its mission.”

Use It
The use of information in all environments, including within educational and research institutions, is governed by or intellectual property law. Everyone who uses information, everyone who uses a library, makes a copy of an electronic journal article on their computer, or even makes a photocopy, needs to know the law and how it applies to him or her. Do not assume that, because you are part of a university, all use you make of information falls under fair use or educational exemptions . This is not the case.
What do I need to do to show a film or video for a program or to a campus organization?

In the matter of the Recording Industry Association of America v. Verizon, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D. C. Circuit reversed the District Court order enforcing RIAA's subpoenas that required Verizon Internet Services to disclose the names of its subscribers engaged in peer-to-peer file sharing. The Court's decision uniformly rejected the arguments of the RIAA in the case. This decision is welcomed by ALA and other library associations that had signed on to a "friend of the court" brief in support of Verizon in August 2003. See: Court Cases RIAA v. The document seeks to capture how institutions are applying fair use in the development of electronic reserves systems. Applying Fair Use in the Development of Electronic Reserves has been developed in response to confusion about TEACH and ongoing uncertainty regarding e-reserves.
