if not renewed, and not made exempt from the renewal requirement (see above) have also expired. One easy way to check, sometimes, is just to see if there was any edition published more than 28 years after the original edition, and see if there's a renewal notice in that newer edition. This doesn't always work a lot of books simply don't get reprinted but if there is such an edition, it can be an easy check to make. has been renewed, by mailing them you might be able to convince them to let an edition go online anyway. Federal Depository Libraries . A few libraries known to have a reasonably full set are the Carnegie Library in Pittsburgh, the Free Library of Philadelphia (in microform), the University of Chicago library, and the University of California, Los Angeles. We're also now starting to see renewal records from years before 1978 go online. Right now, most renewal records for 1950-1954 are now online, allowing renewals for 1923 and 1924 to be checked for most types of books. In addition, book renewals for 1955-1977 are online. TIMELINE:
18th-19th Centuries 20th-21st Centuries Bibliography and Resources 1787: U.S. Constitution According to Article I, Section 8, Clause 8 of the U.S. Constitution , "the Congress shall have power . . . to promote the progress of science and useful arts, by securing for limited times to authors and inventors the exclusive right to their respective writings and discoveries."
Wheaton v. Peters amicus brief submitted to the U.S. Supreme Court by Tyler Ochoa and Mark Rose in the case of Eldred v. Ashcroft, May 20, 2002.
Folsom v. Marsh
the value of the original is sensibly diminished, or the labors of the original author are substantially to an injurious extent appropriated by another, that is sufficient, in point of law, to constitute a piracy pro tanto" (my emphasis). The court's definition of what constituted a "justifiable use of the original materials" formed the basis of the "fair use" doctrine. Put another way, Story said that, "the question of piracy, often depend[s] upon a nice balance of the comparative use made in one of the materials of the other; the nature, extent, and value of the materials thus used; the objects of each work; and the degree to which each writer may be fairly presumed to have resorted to the same common sources of information, or to have exercised the same common diligence in the selection and arrangement of the materials." Stowe v. Thomas

The Library of Congress Congress Approves Nineteenth Amendment
    Mrs. Carrie Chapman Catt

    After the 36th State Ratified,
    Prints and Photograph Division

On June 4 , 1919, Congress, by joint resolution, approved the woman's suffrage amendment and sent it to the states for ratification. Earlier, the House had voted 304-89 and the Senate 56-25 in favor of the amendment. Disagreement on whether the best strategy was to pursue enfranchisement through a federal amendment or by individual state campaigns had divided the women's suffrage movement in 1869. Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony worked for a federal amendment under the banner of the National Woman Suffrage Association, while Lucy Stone led the American Woman Suffrage Association's state-by-state battle for the vote. In 1890, the two groups united to form the National American Woman Suffrage Association . NAWSA combined both techniques to secure voting rights for all American women. A series of well-orchestrated state campaigns took place under the dynamic direction of Carrie Chapman Catt , while the new National Woman's Party, led by Alice Paul , used more militant tactics to obtain a federal amendment.
