Lewis, C. S. Lewis, C. S. (Clive Staples Lewis), , English author, b. Belfast, Ireland. A fellow and tutor of English at Magdalen College, Oxford, from 1925 to 1954, C. S. Lewis was noted equally for his literary scholarship and for his intellectual and witty expositions of Christian tenets. Among his most important works are The Allegory of Love (1936), an analysis of the literary evolution of romantic love during the Middle Ages; The Screwtape Letters (1942, rev. ed. 1961), an ironic treatment of the theme of salvation; and a history of English Literature in the Sixteenth Century (1954). He is also the author of Out of the Silent Planet (1938) and That Hideous Strength The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950) and The Silver Chair (1953); many works of literary criticism, including

C.S.Lewis
C.S. Lewis held the chair of Medieval and Renaissance English Literature at Cambridge University, England. He was an atheist or agnostic until 1929. He was a friend of J.R.R. Tolkien and wrote an introduction for one of J.B. Philips' books. Lewis was one of the finest Christian apologists of our century. His focus was on the core of Christian belief, and he avoided sectarian disputes. A topic that figured prominently in his writing and conversation was the immortality of man. Much of his writing explores this fundamental belief and its consequent corollaries. He believed that Christianity had to be taken seriously; at the same time, he was known by his friends to have a great sense of humor and fun. Some of his best books are: The Screwtape Letters * The Chronicles of Narnia * The Great Divorce * The Four Loves * The Business of Heaven * Surprised by Joy * Mere Christianity I also recommend biographies by Walter Hooper and/or Roger Lancelyn Green . I have especially enjoyed reading the prefaces Walter Hooper writes in some editions. He lived with Lewis shortly before his death and assisted with arranging his works afterward. Hooper wrote: "Lewis struck me as the most throughly converted man I ever met. Christianity was never for him a separate department of life..."

Just William
Clive Stapleton Lewis was born in Belfast in 1898. He was educated at Malvern College followed by University College, Oxford. At Oxford he was a member of the informal group known as the Inklings, along with Charles Williams and J.R.R.Tolkien. He has produced one of the great classics of this century in the Narnia series. Although a number of religious parallels can be compared between the Narnia series and Christianity, this does not detract from the enjoyment of these books. Harper, US 1980 Notes on Collecting: One of the Big collector series. When I say big, I mean they cost a lot. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe should cost at least £500 ($800) for an average copy, with good copies heading towards £3000 ($4500). Early reprints can be had much cheaper and this might be the only way for the average collector.

Light in the Shadowlands: Protecting the Real C. S. Lewis
Kathryn Lindskoog
Patrick Wynne Robert S. Ellwood
Published by Hope Publishing House (July 1996) ISBN 0880706953 Price $15.95 Customer Reviews . . .follow-up to Mrs. Lindskoog's earlier work "The CS Lewis Hoax".Informed hobbits have known for quite some time that there have been serious issues of legitimacy and integrity surrounding the writings and literary legacy of CS Lewis, close friend and fellow Inkling of our own great Professor. In this volume, Mrs. Lindskoog continues to trace the history and lineage of Lewis' literary legacy and demonstrates that there has, in all likelihood, been a great deal of fraud and deceit practiced upon lovers of Lewis by a number of individuals who should have known better. Indeed, going a step further than her earlier work, Mrs. Lindskoog examines in detail several specific "myths" which have arisen concerning the life and legacy of Lewis myths which should now be considered "laid to rest".This hobbit can only hope that Mrs. Lindskoog's book is widely read and disseminated among those of our fellows who truly loved Mr. Lewis and respected his legitimate work.

History Print this page C.S. Lewis An unusual man with an unusual life, "Jack," as his friends called him was a scholar and author who argued compellingly for the reality of God and the truth of the Gospel. by Victor Shepherd In the Trinity term of 1929 I gave in, and admitted that God was God, and knelt and prayed; perhaps, that night, the most dejected and reluctant convert in all England. I did not see then what is now the most shining and obvious thing: the divine humility which will accept a convert on even such terms. S o wrote Clive Staples Lewis of his conversion in his autobiography, Surprised By Joy . "Dejected" and "reluctant" were true only in the sense that "Jack" (as all his friends called him) was now "defeated," having held out against God for years. As persistently as Lewis had marshalled arguments of every kind to confirm him in his agnosticism, the Hound of Heaven had crept ever closer. Possessed of an unusual ability in philosophy, Lewis finally admitted reluctantly that the rational case for God had better philosophical support than the case against God. His intellect took him to the very doorway of faith. Then he stepped ahead in the simple surrender and trust which also characterize the least sophisticated of God's children. Lewis was "surprised" by joy. The nagging, nameless longing that had haunted him for years and that he had tried alternately to satisfy and to deny now gave way to contentment. He had been looking for his answer in the wrong place.

Customer Reviews The book is short and so are the sections. And for some reason, it gives the book a certain charm. You can take a minute or two and read the next section, and if you want put it down. There is a lot of information in each section. The first part of the book is biographical in nature. The more interesting part, in my opinion, is the second part. This is where the editor really shined and his admiration and understanding of Lewis shines through. Each section deals with Lewis' thoughts on certain subjects. It is not really biographical...it is picking the brain of a giant. The book is truly wonderful and I suggest it for all Lewis fans, or for those serious about becoming more acquainted with his thoughts. Would make a great gift. I had only read the Chronicles of Narnia, which I had found to be very profound, yet I had never really understood the breadth of the contributions of C. S. Lewis before reading this small volume. Mr. Glaspey does not waste words in this interesting biography. I have not read anything else about Lewis, but I feel that I know and understand so much about him because of this book. This book is divided equally between the life of Lewis and His teachings. If anything was a could be improved it would be that much of the teaching is paraphrased and summarized by Glaspey. I am certain that larger excerpts of Lewis own very eloquent words would have been better. I appreciate the small bibliography of other biographies of Lewis included at the end. This book does a wonderful job of highlighting a christian genius.
