Cambridge Universities, C.S. Lewis (1898-1963) wrote more than 40 books. Indeed, his published output sometimes appears to be the work of at least three different authors.
One was a serious scholar who, as a young man, won top honors for his study of classics, philosophy, and English. His book The Allegory of Love (1936) remains a landmark in the criticism of medieval and Renaissance literature. This was also the Lewis who, according to academic legend, had read every book published in the English language during the 16th century.
A second C.S. Lewis may have been the greatest 20th-century practitioner of apologetics the branch of Christian theology arguing for the soundness of its doctrines against the objections of unbelievers. Lewis had become an atheist in his teens, but underwent a dramatic conversion in 1931, largely under the influence of discussions with a fellow Oxford medievalist named J.R.R. Tolkien. Lewis told the story of his conversion in Surprised by Joy (1955), and delivered numerous lectures, such as the BBC radio addresses gathered in

BOOK REVIEWS C. S. LEWIS: LIFE AT THE CENTER "... an accomplished study of how Lewis balanced his life as an academic with the basics of his faith in order to live 'life at the center.' Bramlett succeeds in showing Lewis' authentic piety as it shines through (his) writings and remembrances of friends. Bramlett... through his study of Lewis, presents a cogent argument for faith in Jesus Christ." Wayne Hager, THE WESTERN RECORDER "(This) volume contains many details of the life of Lewis not generally known by the casual reader... By bringing together material that is either widely scattered, or unavailable to the general reader, Bramlett has performed a valuable service... (He) writes well, using scholarly apparatus yet communicating without mannerism or affectation..." Bob Koch, THE PROVIDENT BOOK FINDER "... (this) is a wonderful little book on Lewis and his spiritual life... (it) is about... Jack Lewis and how he pursued his Christianity, and consequently deserves our attention... In his Preface (Bramlett) states that 'literature about Jack's spirituality... has been lacking.' He's correct, and this slim volume... is a step in the right direction... When, someday, someone writes the definitive work on the spiritual life of C. S. Lewis, Mr. Bramlett's LIFE AT THE CENTER will definitely be near the top of the Works Consulted page. But, then again, Mr. Bramlett just might even be the author." Mike Logsdon, THE LAMP-POST OF THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA C. S. LEWIS SOCIETY

C.S. Lewis
Clive Staples ("Jack") Lewis (1898-1963) is probably the best known and most effective 20th century writer of Christian apologetics. He was a respected scholar and teacher at Oxford university for 29 years and then served as a professor at Cambridge University until the end of his career. C.S. Lewis received his First Class degree in Classical Moderations from University College, Oxford University in 1920. In 1922, he received another First Class degree in Literae Humaniores, and yet another in English Language and Literature in 1923. During his professional career he was Fellow and Tutor in English at Magdalen College, Oxford University from 1925 until 1954, and Professor of Medieval and Renaissance English at Cambridge University from 1954 until 1963. An atheist throughout his early life, he adopted theism in 1929 and converted to Christianity in 1931. Lewis' spiritual pilgrimage followed two tracks, both intellectual and emotional-intuitive. Since childhood he had experienced prolonged moments of longing, the bittersweet stab of desire. He perceived that these longings, which he came to identify as joy, actually pointed away from themselves, to another world of permanence and fulfillment, to God.

Tolkien . During his literary career, Lewis was one of the most popular spokesmen for Christianity in the English-speaking world. " 'When Aslan said you could never go back to Narnia, he meant the Narnia you were thinking of. But that was not the real Narnia. That had a beginning and an end. It was only a shadow or a copy of the real Narnia which has always been there and always will be there: just as our own world, England and all, is only a shadow or copy of something in Aslan's real world. You need not mourn over Narnia, Lucy. All of the old Narnia that mattered, all the dear creatures, have been drawn into the real Narnia through the Door. And of course it is different; as different as a real thing is from a shadow or as waking life is from a dream.'" (from The Last Battle Clive Staples Lewis was born in Belfast, Ireland, as the son of A.J. Lewis, a solicitor, and Flora Augusta (Hamilton). His mother, a promising mathematician, died when he was nine years old. Lewis had been very close to his mother, who taught him to love books and encouraged him to study French and Latin. Lewis and his brother were brought up by their father. During his childhood, Lewis created the imaginary country of Bloxen. He started writing early - in the attic of their house he had a "study" where he composed his stories. After attending schools in Hertfordshire, Northern Ireland and Malvern, he was educated at home from 1914-17. "I am the product of long corridors, empty sunlit rooms, upstairs indoor silences, attics explored in solitude, distant noises of gurgling cisterns and pipes, and the noise of wind under the tiles. Also of endless books," Lewis wrote in his autobiographical book

CHRONOLOGY OF THE LIFE OF C.S. LEWIS
Clive Staples Lewis was born on November 29 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, to Albert J. Lewis (1863-1929) and Florence Augusta Hamilton Lewis (1862-1908). His brother Warren Hamilton Lewis had been born on June 16, 1895. The Lewis family moved to their new home, "Little Lea," on the outskirts of Belfast. Flora Hamilton Lewis died of cancer on August 23, Albert Lewis' (her husband's) birthday. During this year Albert Lewis' father and brother also died. In September Lewis was enrolled at Wynyard School, Watford, Hertfordshire referred to by C.S. Lewis as "Oldie's School" or "Belsen". His brother had entered in May 1905. Lewis left "Belsen" in June and, in September, was enrolled as a boarding student at Campbell College, Belfast, one mile from "Little Lea," where he remained until November, when he was withdrawn upon developing serious respiratory difficulties. Lewis was sent to Malvern, England, which was famous as a health resort, especially for those with lung problems. Lewis was enrolled as a student at Cherbourg House (which he referred to as "Chartres"), a prep school close by Malvern College where Warnie was enrolled as a student. Jack remained there until June 1913. It was during this time that he abandoned his childhood Christian faith. He entered Malvern College itself (which he dubbed "Wyvern") in September 1913 and stayed until the following June. In April, Lewis met Arthur Greeves (1895-1966), of whom he said, in 1933, "After my brother, my oldest and most intimate friend." On September 19, Lewis commenced private study with W.T. Kirkpatrick, "The Great Knock," in Great Bookham Surrey, with whom he was to remain until April 1917. William T. Kirkpatrick (1848-1921) was former Headmaster of Lurgan College, County Armagh, Northern Ireland, from 1874-99. Albert Lewis had attended Lurgan from 1877-79 and later was Kirkpatrick's solicitor. After Kilpatrick retired from Lurgan in 1899, he began taking private students and had already successfully prepared Lewis' brother, Warnie, for admission to the Royal Military College at Sandhurst.

Clive Staples ("C.S.") Lewis
Author and Critic
Lewis was born in Dundela Avenue, Strandtown, Belfast and baptised in St Mark's, Dundela, by his grandfather, Thomas Hamilton, who was rector there. In 1905 the family moved to "Little Lea" on the Circular Road, which his father had built; it is the location of the wardrobe which plays such an important role in his children's stories, The Chronicles of Narnia. The house however is privately owned and not accessible to the public. Lewis was educated in England, at Malvern College and University College, Oxford, his education being interrupted by military service during the First World War when he was wounded at the battle of Arras. On his return to university he graduated brilliantly and became Fellow and Tutor at Magdalen College (he later moved to Cambridge as Professor of Medieval and Renaissance Literature). Perhaps his best-known academic book is The Allegory of Love (about medieval literature), but he reached a wider audience through works of Christian apology like The Screwtape Papers and radio broadcasts on the same subject. The Narnia stories, originally composed for World War Two evacuees, brought him great success - although his friend J.R.R. Tolkien, author of The Lord Of The Rings, did not like them! In his later years he married the American Joy Gresham, who in 1960 died of cancer; his autobiography Surprised By Joy is partly inspired by her. The play and film Shadowlands tell a somewhat romanticised version of their story. Lewis died in 1963 and is buried at Holy Trinity Church, Haddington, Oxford.

Editor: Steve Van Nattan [God] said (in the Bible) that we were “gods” and He is going to make good His words. If we let Him—for we can prevent Him, if we choose—He will make the feeblest and filthiest of us into a god or goddess, a dazzling, radiant, immortal creature, pulsating all through with such energy and joy and wisdom and love as we cannot now imagine. —

[Clive Staples]
Long before there was a Harry Potter, there were the works of JRR Tolkein and CS Lewis. And while the sensation they created may not have been nearly so frantic nor universal in those blessed premedia days, the fanaticism that they engendered was no less powerful. Our neighbor Mark Farris used to just start one series and read it, then start the other and read it and then start all over again. I wasn't quite that bad, but I do recall that one of the proudest accomplishments of my young life was actually completing both series, a feat that involved reading several thousand pages. Now, I'm certain that most of the metaphorical and allegorical nuances of these books completely escaped most of us at these early readings. But these books, along with comic books and pulp novels like Doc Savage and The Avenger, served one vital function, they demonstrated with incontrovertible certitude that there were such things as good and evil and that it was better to be good. Such books are often termed escapist fantasy and, for me at least, that was precisely their attraction; the opportunity that they offered, to escape from the disturbing moral relativism of the 60's and 70's, and enter worlds where the truths, that I sensed to be eternal and absolute, actually obtained. As much as parents or religion, it was books like these that formed the template from which our inchoate sense of morality was forged.
