Leroux, Gaston Biography
Gaston Leroux (1868-1927) French mystery novelist, playwright, journalist, and a prolific feuilletonist. Leroux is best known for his (1910, The Phantom of the Opera), in which a criminally insane recluse haunts a Paris opera house, and abducts a young and beautiful singer to his cellar retreat. The novel has been a source for several films and stage adaptations, including Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical version, first produced in 1987. "The Opera ghost really existed. He was not, as was long believed, a creature of the imagination of the artists, the superstition of the managers, or a product of the absurd and impressionable brains of the young ladies of the ballet, their mothers, the box-keepers, the cloak-room attendants or the concierge. Yes, he existed in flesh and blood, although he assumed the complete appearance of a real phantom; that is to say, of a spectral shade." (from The Phantom of the Opera Gaston Leroux was born in Paris, the son of a wealthy storeowner. He attended school in Normandy and studied law in Paris, receiving his degree in 1889. After inheriting nearly a million francs he spent most of his time drinking and gambling. Finding his money gone Leroux started to work as a theater critic and reporter for . By 1890 Leroux had become a full-time journalist. Between the years 1894 and 1906 he travelled in different countries in Europe, Africa, and Asia as a correspondent. Leroux wrote for the daily newspaper

L IFE B EFORE P HANTOM A Brief Biographical Sketch
L'Echo de Paris . Still later, he became a courtroom reporter and eventually a correspondent, traveling the world over to cover events on location. During his period as correspondent, Leroux traveled to Sweden, to Finland,to England, to Egypt and even once, to Korea. In Morocco he disguised himself as an Arab both in Fez and Larache to report on the crisis of 1905 and in Russia, he covered the first stages of the revolution. Even so, he managed to return often enough to Paris to marry, divorce and remarry. He also had time to write four novels which were published as serials in miscellaneous Paris newspapers.
The Mystery of the Yellow Room
. In this novel, Leroux created the character of Joseph Rouletabille, the French detective with a head as round as a bullet, red as a tomato and looking like nothing so much as "a billiard ball."* Said Leroux, "When I sat down to pen that story, I decided to go "one better" than Conan Doyle, and make my "mystery" more complete than even Edgar Allan Poe had ever done in his stories of Mystery and Imagination. The problem which I set myself was exactly the same as theirs - that is, I assumed that a crime had been committed in a room which, as far as exits and entrances were concerned, was hermetically closed. That room opened; all the evidence of the murder is there, but the murderer has mysteriously disappeared."**

Theme Search Advanced Search The Ebookstore is a trademark of Unitel Inc Gaston Leroux French Author Le Fantome de l'Opera In his early years, Monsieur Gaston Louis Alfred Leroux, born in Paris, was an admirator of Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas. Like London and Conrad, , Gaston had a passion for the sea, which didn't go much further than sailing and deap-sea fishing at St. Valery-en Caux, in Normandy. To please his father, Gaston, who wanted to become a writer, studied law instead. His father died the year Gaston had graduated, and left him a coniderable fortune, which, none the less, Gaston managed to burn in less than a year, enjoying the Parisian life of the Quartier Latin, champagne, beautiful ladies, gamblings and expensive dinners. Indeed, Leroux was a sought-after companion. Around his table the conversations were intensely animated with wit, humour and laughter. He then started as a freelance writer, and eventually was appointed as a critic by a Parisian newspaper. This was the start of a journalistic career, followed by worlwide missions at Le Matin, which brought Gaston as far as to Egypt and Korea. In Russia, in 1905, he covered the first turbulences of the Revolution.
