Wicca
Piccola Biografia Polemica
By Kernunnos

Oscar Fingal O'Flaherty Wills Wilde, born in 1854 in Dublin, Ireland, was the second son of Sir William Robert and Lady Jane Francesca Wilde. At the age of ten, Wilde entered the well-known Portora Royal School, where he excelled in Greek studies. His interest in Greek continued at Trinity College, Dublin, where John Mahaffy, an eminent Greek scholar who later took Wilde on a tour of Italy, was his tutor. Wilde was awarded a scholarship in classics from Magdalene College, Oxford, which he entered in 1874. During his fourth year at Oxford, Wilde won the prestigious Newdigate Prize for imitative poetry with a verse praising Ravenna, a city he had visited with Mahaffy and the burial site of Dante. In addition to his studies, Wilde began to develop his role as poseur and aesthete. Wilde received his BA in 1878 and, after an additional year at Oxford, went to London where he began writing. In 1880 Wilde published Vera; or, The Nihilists, and in 1881 he was hired by Richard D'Oyly Carte to boost Gilbert and Sullivan's new opera Patience in America by means of a lecture tour. Dressed in black velvet and a full length fur coat, he spoke on the new aestheticism from New York to San Francisco. He met with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Louisa May Alcott, Walt Whitman, and Jefferson Davies, among others.

Egyptian Sketch-Book, his Brand-New Ballads, and the sly meditations of his Flaxius, Leland may fairly be considered a humorist of only one character. Hans Breitmann, created by accident to fill a space in in 1856 and revived for the last time in a prose and verse sketch-book of the Tyrol in 1895, remains the outstanding representative of his genius. A blessed new year to you... Just eight months and three issues before the momentous arrival of the millenium, that is, if you observe the Gregorian Christian calendar of Pope Gregory XIII, instituted in 1582, only eight years before King James VI of Scotland (James I of England) accused Francis Stewart the Earl of Bothwell of leading a coven of Witches against him. In 1593, as Stewart escaped to Italy, Agnes Sampson and other Witches of Stewart's coven were burned at the stake in August 1593. The Gregorian calendar established January 1 as the first day of the new year. In the west the Julian solar calendar, introduced to rectify inaccuracies of earlier lunar calendars, gave the year 365 and a quarter days. Five intercalary days were distributed through the year and a leap year was instituted every fourth year, giving an error of eight days in every one thousand years. Until the earlier revision by Julius Caesar, the Roman calendar, based on a cycle of four years with ten months in one year of 355 days began in May with the quickening of spring.

    IV. NOVELISTS AND HUMORISTS
    Southern Romancers.
Writers of fiction were numerous during the first half of the century, in the South as well as in the North. While Cooper and Poe were the only ones who attained eminence in this field, there was no lack of story-telling, and in several instances a wide local reputation was built upon the success of a single book. The influence of Cooper is strongly felt in the work of three Southern novelists, Kennedy, Bird, and Simms, of whom the last-named deserves a wider fame. John P. Kennedy (1795-1870), a native of Baltimore and a successful lawyer who represented his state in Congress and was also Secretary of the Navy under President Fillmore, is chiefly remembered as the author of Horse-Shoe Robinson (1835), his best work; a capital romance of the Revolution in the South. The Indian novel, Nick of the Woods (1837), constitutes the principal claim of Dr. Robert M. Bird (1803-1854) to recognition in this group. He was, however, the author of several romances dealing with the Spanish Conquest of Mexico, and also of two or three plays, among which The Gladiator holds the principal place.
