It intends to put as many books on-line as possible and to gather these on line works into one central location. It is a terrific service of the University of Illinois.
Project Gutenberg is the brainchild of Michael Hart, who in 1971 decided that it would be a really good idea if lots of famous and important texts were freely available to everyone in the world. Since then, he has been joined by hundreds of volunteers who share his vision. Now, more than thirty years later, Project Gutenberg has the following figures (as of November 8th 2002): 203 New eBooks released during October 2002, 1975 New eBooks produced in 2002 (they were 1240 in 2001) for a total of 6267 Total Project Gutenberg eBooks. 119 eBooks have been posted so far by Project Gutenberg of Australia

Emancipation Proclamation Complete text of the Emancipation Proclamation, signed by Abraham Lincoln as President, William Seward as Secretary of State, and John Nicolay, Private Secretary to the President. The Emancipation Proclamation is a cornerstone document in the history of the United States. It played a critical role in the victory of the Union, the reunification of the nation, and the final abolition of slavery. “All persons held as slaves within any state or designated part of a state, the people whereof shall be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free…”Lincoln signed copies in June of 1864 to be sold in support of the Sanitary Commission, which raised money for sick and wounded Civil War soldiers, and improved conditions in military camps.
The Emancipation Proclamation was the single most important act of Lincoln’s presidency. The preliminary proclamation, announced on September 22, 1862, warned Southern states that if they did not abandon the war they would lose their slaves. As the final version took full effect on January 1, 1863, slavery in the United States at last approached its demise, allowing the nation to take the crucial first steps in granting citizenship to African Americans Rarely has a single document affected so much of the nation’s history—perhaps no other besides the

POEMS BY CHARLES GODFREY LELAND: LELAND, CHARLES GODFREY . Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, August 15, 1824; died in Florence, Italy, March 20, 1903. Chiefly known as the author of "Hans Breitmann's Ballads," Charles Godfrey Leland had not only a rich vein of humor, but was a scholar of wide cultivation and actively identified with movements to further the knowledge of the arts on the part of the people. He was educated at Princeton and supplemented his work there with study at German and French universities. In his early youth he practiced law, but literary drew him into other channels, and in 1869 he took up his residence in London and gave himself chiefly to the study of folk-lore. RELATED WEBSITES
