Back to Home Page or Contents Page or People or Index Leland, Charles Godfrey L eland was an American folklorist, lecturer, and prolific author who wrote several classic texts on English Gypsies and Italian Witches. He was founder and first president of the Gypsy Lore Society. His immersion into Gypsy lore and Witchcraft influenced its revival in the 20th century. He was born August 15, 1824, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, into a family with Puritan heritage. His father, Henry, was a descendant of Hopestill Leland, one of the first white settlers in New England. He died on March 20, 1903, in Florence, Italy. Leland was conscious of the significance of his birth date as it is contributed to the ascension of the Virgin Mary into heaven, and also to the ascension of Buddha. He considered himself fortunate because of this. His niece Elizabeth Robins Pennell in the two-volume biography of him described many details of Leland's life that she wrote in 1906. She shows that Leland's fascination with occultism and folklore started early in life. In the biography's first chapter she writes: In both the "Memoirs" and "Memoranda," he tells how he was carried up to the garret by his old Dutch nurse, who was said to be a sorceress, and left there with a Bible, a key, and a knife on his breast, lighted candles, money, and a plate of salt at his head: rite that were to make luck doubly certain by helping him rise in life, and become a scholar and wizard.

Charles G. Leland was a scholar, folklorist and author who wrote several classic books on English Gypsies and Italian Witches. These include Etruscan Roman Remains Legends of Florence The Gypsies Gypsy Sorcery and perhaps his most famous book Aradia: Gospel of the Witches . In all he wrote over fifty books during his life time and his writings inspired the likes of Gerald Gardner and Doreen Valiente as well as many other pioneers of modern day Witchcraft. Born of old English descent, Charles G. Leland’s lineage can be traced back to a John Leland who became the Royal Antiquary in 1533, and later to Charles Leland who was Secretary of the Society of Antiquaries during the reign of Charles 1. His family moved to America in 1636 and there settled Massachusetts. Charles G. Leland was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the 15th of August 1824. A few days after his birth an old Dutch nurse carried Leland up into the garret of his home and there performed a ritual. She placed upon his breast a Bible, a key and a knife and then placed lighted candles, money and a plate of salt at his head. The purpose of the rite was to cause him to rise up in life, to be lucky and to become a scholar and a wizard. He grew up as a child fascinated with folklore and magick, and was regaled with stories and tales of ghosts, witches and fairies. The family being prosperous they lived in a household that employed servants and from one - an Irish immigrant woman - he learned about fairies, and from another – a black women working in the kitchen – he learned about Voodoo.

THE ROMAN RING by: Charles Godfrey Leland (1824-1903)
    SAW you first upon a gem set in a Roman ring,
    And I burned for it with longing as for a living thing.
    The Greek who sees his heart's own love sold in a Turkish mart
    Is not more grieved to think his purse is smaller than his heart,
    Than I with many wishes and ducats very few
    Was grieved to leave that lovely face behind me with the Jew.

    Again I met you ripening and kindling into life
    Beneath a skilful painter's brush as Vulcan's lovely wife,
    From the foam and flood of colour, out-blushing lusciously,
    As Venus Aphrodite rose from the summer sea;
    And I waited with the patience of one whom fate entwines,
    And sees a new strange destiny around him spin its lines.
    With doubting curiosity I watched the painter's face, Yet earnestly and half in fear, to see if I could trace

A THOUSAND YEARS AGO by: Charles Godfrey Leland (1824-1903)
    HOU and I in spirit-land,
    A thousand years ago,
    Watched the waves beat on the strand,
    Ceaseless ebb and flow;
    Vowed to love and ever love
    A thousand years ago.
    Thou and I in greenwood shade,
    Nine hundred years ago,
    Heard the wild dove in the glade
    Murmuring soft and low;
    Vowed to love for evermore,
    Nine hundred years ago.
    Thou and I in yonder star,
    Eight hundred years ago, Saw strange forms of light afar In wild beauty glow; All things change, but love endures Now as long ago!
    Thou and I in Norman halls, Seven hundred years ago, Heard the warder on the walls Loud his trumpet blow

CHARLES GODFREY LELAND
THE FATHER OF MODERN WITCHCRAFT
Charles Leland (1824-1903)
Charles Leland - Folklorist and Author whose 19th Century field studies in Italy revealed the existence of a surviving Witch Cult from ancient times. He wrote and had published several classic texts, such as Aradia; Gospel of the Witches , and Etruscan Roman Remains (both published by 1899.) Leland's writings on Italian Witchcraft bear many striking similar elements to the writings on Gardnerian Wicca written by Gerald Gardner over one half a century later.
Many people today think of Gerald Gardner as the founder of modern Wicca/Witchcraft. Gardner's books on Witchcraft published in the mid-twentieth century brought about a growing interest in the Old Religion of pre-Christian Europe. However, over half a century earlier a man named Charles Godfrey Leland wrote on many of the same topics later popularized by Gerald Gardner. For example, the theme of witches meeting at the time of the full moon, being nude, calling their ways The Old Religion, celebrating with ritual cakes and wine, and worshipping a god and goddess all appear in Leland's writings on Italian Witchcraft circa 1896. "as for the English word witch, Anglo-Saxon Wicca, comes from a root implying wisdom..." Leland's footnote here reads: "Witch. Mediaeval English wicche, both masculine and feminine, a wizard, a witch. Anglo-Saxon wicca, masculine, wicce feminine. Wicca is a corruption of witga, commonly used as a short form of witega, a prophet, seer, magician, or sorcerer. Anglo-Saxon witan, to see, allied to witan, to know..."
