The son of Revolutionary War hero, "Light Horse" Harry Lee - who fell into disrepute in his later years, attended West Point and graduated second in his class. During his four years he never earn a single demerit and served as the cadet corps' adjutant. Upon his 1829 graduation he was posted to the engineers. Before the Mexican War he served on engineering projects in GA, VA and New York. During the war he served on the staff of John Wool and Winfield Scott. Particularly distinguishing himself scouting for and guiding troops, he won three brevets and was slightly wounded at Chapultepec. In 1859 he was called upon to lead a force of marines, to join with the militia on the scene, to put an end to John Browns Harpers Ferry Raid. There after he served again in Texas until summoned to Washington in 1861 by Winfield Scott who tried to retain Lee in the U.S. service. But the Virginian rejected the command of the Union's field forces on the day after Virginia seceded. He then accepted an invitation to visit Governor John Letcher in VA. His resignation as Colonel, 1st Cavalry to which he had recently been promoted was accepted on April 25, 1861.

ROBERT EDWARD LEE Son of Lighthorse Harry Lee, Robert Edward Lee was born January 19, 1807 at Stratford in Westmoreland County, VA. Following in his father's footsteps, Lee entered West Point in 1825. He graduated second in his class in 1829, receiving a commission as second lieutenant in the engineers. By 1838, he had two brevet promotions, achieving the rank of Captain. Through his courage and brilliant strategies, he received his third brevet promotion in rank in 1852, becoming the superintendent of West Point, the US Military Academy, and later, colonel of the cavalry. In April 17, 1861, Virginia suceded from the Union. At age 54, Lee had to evaluate his position as a member of Union and as a Virginian. Although he did not necessarily agree with southern independence, he was a Virginian. The traditions and familiy history were very strong. On April 20, he submitted his resignation from the U.S. Army, and three days later became President of the Confederate States of America; forever more to be intrinsically linked to the Confederate cause. He was placed in command of the army in northern Virginia. In February 1865 Lee was made commander in chief of all Confederate armies. Lee, a brilliant general, whose military genius was probably the greatest single factor in keeping the Confederacy alive through the four years of the American Civil War, surrendered two months later to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, virtually ending the war. The superior resources and troop strength of the Union had eventually overcom the masterly strategy of Lee. Today, his campaigns are almost universally studied in military schools as models of strategy and tactics.

Following a stint in Baltimore Harbor he became superintendent of the military academy in 1852. When the mounted arm was expanded in 1855, Lee accepted the lieutenant colonelcy of the 2nd Cavalry in order to escape from the painfully slow promotion in the engineers. Ordered to western Texas, he served with his regiment until the 1857 death of his father-in-law forced him to ask for a series of leaves to settle the estate.
In 1859 he was called upon to lead a force of marines, to join with the militia on the scene, to put an end to John Brown's Harper's Ferry Raid. Battle of Seven Days June 25 - July 1, 1862
"It was not war...it was murder."
Major General Daniel Harvey Hill, CSA A defeat that could have ended the war stared Robert E. Lee in the eyes when he assumed command of the Confederate forces participating in the battles in the eastern theater. General Joseph Eggleston Johnston's wounding in the Battle of Seven Pines led to Lee's appointment. Richmond was poorly defended: The capital's fortifications were lacking, and the defending troops were demoralized and outnumbered by the Union forces nearby. Lee acted immediately. He strengthened Richmond's defenses, improved his army's organization, replenished supplies and weapons, and made himself known to all his troops. All the while, he was formulating a plan to drive the Union troops from Richmond and gain the upper hand. Lee's actions worked and worked well. General Lee's aim was to cut off Little Mac's (Major General George B. McClellan, USA) main army of 125,000 troops from their supply base. Lee planned several ruses to be supported by Major General John B. Magruder and Major General Thomas J. Stonewall. The plan was to commence on June 26, but McClellan had also planned an assault that day. Once he heard of Stonewall Jackson's approach McClellan canceled his plan under the mistaken idea that his forces would be outnumbered. Although the Lee's plan didn't meet with success in the manner he envisioned it still worked. He cut off McClellan from his supplies, Lee won 22 guns and a large amount of badly needed supplies, and broke the siege of Richmond. The Confederate capital was safe for the time being.

S TRATFORD General Robert E. Lee's letters home This is an image of a letter from Robert E. Lee (1807-1870), dated 22 November 1861, to his daughters Anne Carter Lee (1839-1862) and Eleanor Agnes Lee (1841-1873) Some of Lee's letters, written during the trying times of the war, reveal how much he missed his family and home. Just a month later, Lee wrote to his daughter on Christmas Day: "My Dear Daughter: Having distributed such poor Christmas gifts as I had to those around me, I have been looking for something for you. Trifles even are hard to get these war-times, and you must not therefore expect more. I have sent you what I thought most useful in your separation from me, and hope it will be of some service...To compensate for such ?trash,'[money] I send you some sweet violets, that I gathered for you this morning while covered with dense white frost, whose crystals glittered in the bright sun like diamonds, and formed a brooch of rare beauty and sweetness, which could not be fabricated by the expenditure of a world of money. ...Among the calamities of war, the hardest to bear perhaps, is the separation of families and friends."... Of Arlington and Stratford, the two homes around which so many hallowed memories were grouped, he wrote his wife the same day:

After the war, he became superintendent of West Point (1852-1855) and sought to raise the school's academic standards. Before the start of the Civil War, he freed all of his slaves. The bold and daring commander was so highly regarded that Abraham Lincoln repeatedly offered Lee command of the Union armies. Lee, of course, resigned, joined the Confederates, and became Jefferson Davis' personal military advisor. "A true man of honor feels humbled himself when he cannot help humbling others," Lee said. After the war, he urged Southerners to

Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870)
Born: 19 January 1807 Stratford, VA, USA

The idol of the South to this day, Virginian Robert E. Lee had some difficulty in adjusting to the new form of warfare that unfolded with the Civil war, but this did not prevent him from In 1859 he was called upon to lead a force of marines, to join with the militia on the scene, to put an end to John Brown's Harper's Ferry Raid. Thereafter he served again in Texas until summoned to Washington in 1861 by Winfield Scott who tried to retain Lee in the U. S. service. But the Virginian rejected the command of the Union's field forces on the day after Virginia seceded. He then accepted an invitation to visit Governor John Letcher in Virginia. His resignation as colonel, 1st Cavalry-to which he had recently been promoted-was accepted on April 25, 1861. His Southern assignments included: major general, Virginia's land and naval forces (April 23, 1861); commanding Virginia forces (April 23 July 1861); brigadier general, CSA (May 14, 186 1); general, CSA (from June 14, 186 1); commanding Department of Northwestern Virginia (late July-October 1861); commanding Department of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida (November 8, 186 1-March 3, 1862); and commanding Army of Northern Virginia June 1, 1862-April 9, 1865). In charge of Virginia's fledgling military might, he was mainly involved in organizational matters. As a Confederate brigadier general, and later full general, he was in charge of supervising all Southern forces in Virginia. In the first summer of the war he was given his first field command in western Virginia. His Cheat Mountain Campaign was a disappointing fizzle largely due to the failings of his superiors. His entire tenure in the region was unpleasant, dealing with the bickering of his subordinates-William W. Loring, John B. Floyd, and Henry A. Wise. After this he became known throughout the South as "Granny Lee. " His debut in field command had not been promising, but Jefferson Davis appointed him to command along the Southern Coast.
