Elizabeth Hill Hill Carter (1796-1870), grandson of Charles Carter, was the owner of Shirley during the Civil War. Shirley survived the war intact because Hill Carter, in 1862, was able to acquire from General George B. McClellan a Federal Safeguard. That safeguard protected the family and property throughout the duration of the war. The current owner, Charles Hill Carter II , is the great-grandson of Hill Carter, and is the ninth generation to own the property.

Robert E. Lee and Montana On 16 February 1861, Confederate sympathizers took over the United States Government facilities in Texas. In the afternoon, Lt. Col. Robert E. Lee rode into San Antonio under orders to leave his remote Texas post and report to Washington. He saw a mob of soldiers in unusual uniforms and asked who they were. Then he learned that General Twiggs had surrendered everything to the State and that the Union troops were now prisoners of war. Caroline Darrow wrote in her Recollections , "I will never forget his look of astonishment, as with his lips trembling and his eyes full of tears, he exclaimed, 'Has it come so soon as this?'" The Texas troops tried to stop his journey and he stated that he was a Virginian, not a Texan, and he was an officer of the United States army under orders to report to Washington, and he intended to carry out his orders. The Texans permitted him to leave. Letters from Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) to William Ellinger of Virginia City, Montana Letter 17 January 1866, Lexington, VA Lexington, Va. 17 Jany '66

    Ulysses S. Grant Eighteenth President
Born: April 27, 1822 in Point Pleasant, Ohio Died: July 23, 1885 in Mount McGregor, New York Married to Julia Dent Grant.
Late in the administration of Andrew Johnson, Gen. Ulysses S. Grant quarreled with the President and aligned himself with the Radical Republicans. He was, as the symbol of Union victory during the Civil War, their logical candidate for President in 1868. When he was elected, the American people hoped for an end to turmoil. Grant provided neither vigor nor reform. Looking to Congress for direction, he seemed bewildered. One visitor to the White House noted "a puzzled pathos, as of a man with a problem before him of which he does not understand the terms." Born in 1822, Grant was the son of an Ohio tanner. He went to West Point rather against his will and graduated in the middle of his class. In the Mexican War he fought under Gen. Zachary Taylor.
At the outbreak of the Civil War, Grant was working in his father's leather store in Galena, Illinois. He was appointed by the Governor to command an unruly volunteer regiment. Grant whipped it into shape and by September 1861 he had risen to the rank of brigadier general of volunteers. He sought to win control of the Mississippi Valley. In February 1862 he took Fort Henry and attacked Fort Donelson. When the Confederate commander asked for terms, Grant replied, "No terms except an unconditional and immediate surrender can be accepted." The Confederates surrendered, and President Lincoln promoted Grant to major general of volunteers.

    Confederate Flag
The 9th Battalion Louisiana Infantry, like most Confederate units, probably had several different types of battle flags during its operational existence. The flag used by the battalion in the Battle of Baton Rouge was captured by the 6th Michigan Infantry. That flag survived the war and was returned by the State of Michigan to the State of Louisiana on 21 September 1942. Unfortunately the current location of the flag is unknown and no description of it has been found. No other flags used by the 9th are known to have survived the war.

LEE, ROBERT EDWARD (1807-1870). Robert Edward Lee, army officer and commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia during the Civil War, qv spent several crucial years of his career in Texas. Lee was born on January 19, 1807, at Stratford Hall, Westmoreland County, Virginia, the son of Gen. Henry and Ann (Carter) Lee. He graduated second in his class at the United States Military Academy in 1829. On June 30, 1831, while stationed at Fort Monroe he married Mary Custis of Arlington, Virginia; they became the parents of seven children. Lee was quite devoted to his family, and as often as military duty would permit, he spent much time at home. He had a wide variety of assignments-working in the chief engineer's office, Washington, D.C., 1834-37; supervising construction on the St. Louis harbor, 1837; and serving with his regiment at Fort Hamilton, New York, 1841-46, with Gen. John E. Wool's qv army from San Antonio to Buena Vista, 1846-47, and with Gen. Winfield Scott's army from Vera Cruz to Mexico City, 1847. As Scott's chief of staff during the Mexican War, qv Lee won three brevets- major, lieutenant colonel, and colonel - all because of conspicuous gallantry in the field. After the Mexican War Lee directed the building of Fort Carroll, near Baltimore, Maryland. From September 1, 1852, until March 31, 1855, he was superintendent of the United States Military Academy. On March 3, 1855, Congress had authorized two new regiments of infantry and two of cavalry to help protect the 8,000-mile western frontier. Against 11,000 troops were 30,000 Indians in widely dispersed raiding bands. Texas had a frontier of more than 1,200 miles, with only 2,886 United States officers and enlisted men to defend it. Lee was with Albert Sidney Johnston's
