  • Born: 19 Jan 1807, Stratford Hall, Westmoreland Co., VA Marriage: CUSTIS, Mary Ann Randolph-[27762] 30 Jun 1831 Died: 12 Oct 1870, at age 63
General Notes: The strong, healthy boy born to "Light Horse Harry" and Ann Carter Lee on January 19, 1807 was the last Lee born at Stratford to survive to maturity. Though he spent fewer than four years there, his later boyhood visits left an impression that he carried throughout his life.
As sometimes happens in distinguished families, one member seems to fall heir to the best qualities of the previous generations and none of the flaws. So it was with Robert Edward Lee. From both the Carters and the Lees he inherited a handsome countenance. From his father came rare physical strength and endurance. The sense of duty that Harry had learned from George Washington was vividly imparted to his son Robert. Even "Light Horse Harry's" difficulties with money seemed to have produced positive responses in Robert, who throughout his life was meticulous and prudent in all finacial matters.
Ann Carter Lee's gentleness was inherited by Robert, and his loving care of his ailing mother was the mainstay of her life. With his father and elder brothers away, and his mother and sisters in failing health, Robert had become, by age 12, head of the household. On cold afternoons, when his mother was well enough, young Robert would stuff paper in the cracks of the carriage to block the wind and take her driving. Years later, when he left for West Point, Ann Lee wrote to a cousin, "How I will get on without Robert? He is both a son and daughter to me."

Civil War Ancestors JOHN OGAN (1836-1915) - My maternal great-great-grandfather was from McArthur, Vinton County, Ohio. John was the third generation of the brick making Ogan family living in southern Ohio after moving from Virginia. On November 8, 1861, John Ogan enlisted in the 56th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company F at McArthur. Like Andrew Jackson Nickell, John Ogan was an active combatant in the Vicksburg Campaign. John was shot through the shoulder at the Battle of Champion Hills on May 16, 1863 as the Union Army pressed westward from Jackson to Vicksburg, Mississippi. John Ogan survived his wounds, and was mustered out with his regiment at New Orleans on November 14, 1864. He returned to Vinton County to start the highly successful McArthur Brickyard. The Ogans had been making bricks for generations. John also made and played his own violins. He enjoyed a long and prosperous life in McArthur, and had nine children with his three wives. He passed away in 1915 at the age of seventy-nine. EDWARD H. CULVER

Robert E. Lee
Robert E. Lee was a general in the Civil War and part of the Confederacy. He was born on January 19, 1807.
He later became the advisor of Jefferson Davis in 1862.
Before the Civil War, Robert Edward Lee had called slavery "a moral and political evil in any society." However, Lee's family had lived in the South since the 1600s. Lee chose to defend and fight for the South.
After the war raged on for four years, Robert E. Lee and his army were the last Confederates to surrender. They did so at Appomattox Court House, Virginia on April 9, 1865.

Robert Edward Lee
Confederate General Robert E. Lee, through strategic brilliance and inspired leadership, turned the Confederate States of America from a hollow boast into a viable threat to the Union. Lee's innovations in maneuver and use of field fortifications - always against larger, better-equipped units - allowed him to gain victory consistently against superior forces. The loyalty and affection he earned from his soldiers and Southern compatriots extended beyond the war and the lost cause, and Lee remains today one of America's most revered military leaders in both the South and the North. Lee was born on January 19, 1807, at Stratford, Virginia, the son of a Revolutionary Way hero and into one of his state's most distinguished families. He graduated second in the West Point class of 1829, never receiving a demerit. An officer of great presence, Lee stood nearly six feet tall. He did not smoke, drink, or swear; he placed his religion and honor above all. During his initial engineer assignments of developing forts and harbors, Lee performed well but exhibited no exceptional talents. It was not until the outbreak of the war with Mexico that he experienced his first combat and distinguished himself under fire. As a member of the stall of Gen. Winfield Scott, Lee personally made the reconnaissance that discovered a flanking route against the enemy at Cerro Gordo in 1847 that led to a victory. In the operations against Mexico City, Lee planned the disposition of the American artillery and suffered a slight wound in the Battle of Chapultepec on September 13, 1847. Scott would later write that Lee "was the best soldier I ever saw in the field."
