I didn't have a ticket for Arsenal-Spurs, as the half season ticket for Highbury I had for a few years has been reclaimed. I hate football-less Saturday afternoons, so I sat listening to the game on the radio while watching the rugby on television while making tea for the builders doing damp-proofing work downstairs. I always believe someone who can do three things at the same time can easily do a fourth, so the moment Arsenal went a goal up I thought, oh God, it's going to be a hammering, I know, I'll fax my friend Pierre in Paris, see if he can give me any dirt on that bastard Wenger. Pierre Merle is a French writer who happens to share two of my interests, football and the Beatles, and has written books on each subject. Clearly a talented, intelligent, admirable person.

Why France? Historical and Ideological Roots of the French Anti-Cult Scare
by Massimo Introvigne
A paper presented at The 2001 Conference in London
This paper is not about the anti-cult crusade in France. Excellent studies of what is happening in France have been presented at other conferences, as well as at this one, and the story does not need to be repeated here. My purpose is rather to tentatively answer a frequently asked question: why, exactly, is France different from its European neighbours on the issue of cults (known in France as " les sectes ")? In the forthcoming issue of the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion , you will read a lengthy discussion, by the undersigned and Jim Richardson, of how the brainwashing metaphor is being used in Europe in order to legitimize the discrimination of religious minorities. A good deal of the paper is devoted, not surprisingly, to France. The Journal will also publish reactions to our paper by Christopher Soper and Thomas Robbins. Both would have liked a more in-depth analysis of why, exactly, certain things are happening in France, and why they do not happen elsewhere in the West. While Robbins concurs with our suggestion that a secular Enlightenment tradition, going back to the French Revolution, is where the study of the causes should start, Soper is persuaded that we downplayed the influence of mainline churches, always wary of competitors. At the moment the relevant issue of the Journal La Religion en miettes ou la question des sects

En la próximas ediciones del Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion The Journal Journal estaba por imprimirse, algo importante sucedió.

From our Yellowback Mystery Series Arsène Lupin, the "Gentleman Burglar" of France, appeared from the pen of Maurice Leblanc (1864–1941) in 1905. In the words of a prominent critic, Leblanc brought to the character "the skill of Sherlock Holmes, the resourcefulness of Raffles, the refinement of a casuist, the epigrammatic nimbleness of La Rouchefoucauld and the gallantry of Du Guesclin." Within the twenty-odd volumes of Lupin’s exploits are several delightful clashes with the pseudonymously disguised Sherlock Holmes. Two of these meetings are chronicled here "The Fair Lady" and "The Jewish Lamp," in which Lupin outrageously tweaks the nose of his English conundrum, but with respect and savoire faire! This volume (a facsimile copy of the 1909 Grant Richards edition from the Lilly Library at Indiana University) dubs Holmes as Holmlock Shears. In other English versions of Leblanc's works Holmes frequently appears as Herlock Sholmes. Hardbound ISBN: 0-918736-11-0
