Fraser Collection
Cope's advertising poster The collection of John Fraser (1836-1902), Secretary of the printing and publishing department of Cope's Tobacco Company in Liverpool, comprising more than 2000 books, ephemera and advertising material. The books reflect Fraser's interest in Scottish literature, positivist philosophy, phrenology, bee-keeping and, particularly, tobacco; the collection also includes examples of the advertising material produced for Cope's under Fraser's direction between 1870 and 1894, as editor of their literary review Cope's Tobacco Plant (1870-1882) and the series of Smoke Room Booklets . The work of the artist John Wallace (1841-1903) and the writers James Thomson (1834-1882) and Richard Le Gallienne (1866-1947) is strongly represented. Notable items include a rare complete set of James Hogg's The Spy (Edinburgh, 1811) and Robert Burns's Poems, chiefly in the Scottish dialect (Edinburgh, 1787, Kelmscott Press ephemera and James I's A Counterblaste to Tobacco (London, 1604). An obituary notice describes Fraser as "a Socialist, a Fabian, a zealous member of the Church of Humanity" (the collection includes a ticket for the opening service of the Liverpool Church of Humanity), but notes that "these extreme opinions were always held with moderation and courtesy." The collection was presented in 1957 and 1963 by Fraser's son Donald and his family.

(1870-1881), Fraser regularly mined his collection for poems and references for this monthly periodical devoted to tobacco.
The pencil portrait of Fraser by his friend the artist John Wallace (1841-1903), a fellow Scot, was done during one of the trips made occasionally by the two men to the Highlands.

Aleichem, Sholom
(1859-1916). Russian born author. Aleichem produced over 40 volumes of stories, plays and poems in Yiddish and was the first author to write in Yiddish for children. Called the "Jewish Mark Twain," Aleichem's works have been widely translated.
Autograph Letter Signed ("Sh. Aleichem") . In Russian. Two pages, small octavo, "Somewhere between Vilnius and Minsk," July 6/7, 1905. To P.S. and L. T. Levin. Two horizontal mailing folds, some soiling at center fold. Overall in fine condition.
Filled with puns, double meanings and jokes, this letter reads like one of Aleichem's stories! He writes about travel, clothes, his child and friends. The centerpiece of the letter revolves around Aleichem's difficulty reaching the Osipoviches; "Such is the fate of the editor of a Jewish newspaper! There is no Osipoviches on the map or in geography. Only one cashier found a ticket there, and, issuing the above looked me searchingly over...I am dreaming of how I will arrive at these Osipoviches, how the Osipoviches will greet me, how I will destroy them, these Osipoviches, to the devil."
