Activism and Psychology Home Page
"This page was created as part of the course work for a graduate seminar in Social Psychology at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada. Instead of writing yet another dust-collecting essay, I chose to create this page as a resource for activists and psychologists, and anyone who, like me, finds themselves in the sometimes strange position of inhabiting both identities".

The History of Crowd Psychology
The French Revolution (The Journee of August 10, 1792) The age we are about to enter will in truth be the ERA OF CROWDS. -Gustave Le Bon ( The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind this links to the complete work; it may take some time to load
The French Revolution and the Beginnings of Crowd Psychology From 1789 to 1793, the people of France revolted against their government in a radical popular uprising, which sparked the French Revolution. This pivotal event in Western European history has since become the topic of much intellectual inquiry due to the mob-like nature of the revolutionary crowds ( Cody, 1999 Gustave Le Bon (1841-1931)) was one significant thinker in the newly-emergent field of social psychology who looked to the behavior of French revolutionaries as the basis for his treatise on how membership in a crowd affects an individual’s thoughts and behavior – a discipline which became known as crowd psychology ( Stanford Humanities Laboratory, 2002 In his 1896 work The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind , Le Bon (who many consider to be the founder of social psychology) contends that when acting collectively, as in a crowd, people feel anonymous and with their individual identity goes their individual conscience.

The History of Excalibur PROLOGUE: Gustave Le Bon 1841-1931 is most likely source for Excalibur Author of "The Psychology of Crowds" French edition 1895 "THE CROWD" English Edition Macmillan and Co 1896 Republished by Viking press New York 1960 Paperback edition 1969 (Perhaps a related book) THE PSYCHOLOGY OF SUGGESTION by Boris Sidis 1898 New York, D Appleton and co. Brief teaser: Gustave Le Bon, founder of social psychology Father of collective behavior theory, THE CROWD gives the basic principles of manipulating crowds into servile flocks, a "group mind" concept. "I have heard that Lenin, Hitler, Stalin, [Mussolini] and deGaulle were at one time or another, all close students of Le Bon's work. THE CROWD has probably had as much practical influence on modern political behavior as any single document, including THE PRINCE" p-353 An inside, aside: "Imagine my delight in finding the dynamic duo of the rules of mayhem merged in one sentence, married to one concept and under the umbrella of Lenin, Hitler, and Stalin. I sez to me, "This is the stuff of EXCALIBUR." "This is the inspirational, practical, and spiritual, "source" of "Excalibur". THE CROWD, the bible of "brainwashing", is the technical handbook of manipulative persuasion.

The blog has a couple of sites posted, and a google on "What was the Enlightenment?" should dredge up a few more. We should be asking ourselves: How have the ideas that emerged in the Enlightenment shaped communication thought? What kinds of questions have they emphasized? Which kinds of questions have Enlightenment ideas omitted or overlooked? Given what we're learning about what people have thought about media and communication, can we safely say that the discipline of communication originates in the Enlightenment? 2. The Paper:
