Family Crests and Coats of Arms: the Heraldic Artist
We have researched the Lazarus family crest in the most recognized sources of coats of arms. Before an artist or craftsman can render a Coat of Arms, it must exist. In other words the arms must have been designed and recorded by the heralds from time immemorial. Heraldic designs matriculated by the lay-artist in many cases becomes uninspired, meretricious and even ugly...

The New Colossus
by Emma Lazarus (1849-1887)
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightening, and her name,
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame. "Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door." COMMENTS The title of the above poem alludes to the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, a huge bronze statue that stood at the city's harbor, representing the much larger mythological god Helios, thought by Greek mythology to stand astride the harbor. Emma Lazarus (1849-1887), a Portuguese Jewish immigrant, penned the poem and won the contest held in 1883 to find a suitable inscription to go on a plaque for the dedication of the Statue of Liberty. Nineteenth Century American Sonnets
For some commentary on the American sonnet through 1930, see a General Survey of the American Sonnet by Lewis Sterner. The first American sonnets were written by the Revolutionary War general David Humphreys in the last quarter of the 18th century and were not published until 1804. Some of the better known American sonneteers of mid-century were Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) (the Romantic link in the Sonnet Central chain), William Cullen Bryant Henry Wadsworth Longfellow John Greenleaf Whittier Jones Very ... Frederick Goddard Tuckerman (1821-1873), and Emma Lazarus (1849-1887). Also included here are many works by lesser known poets. Many of these more obscure works are taken from late 19th century anthologies, so any help with years of birth/death for the writers listed at the bottom of the page is appreciated. Here are some selections from the introduction to American Sonnets (1889), edited by William Sharp "It is, therefore, significant that in contemporary American verse, technically inferior to our own [British] as, in the main, it undoubtedly is, the motives The career of George Santayana (1863-1952), like that of Thomas Hardy, bridged the centuries; included here are his philosophical sonnets from the late 1800s.

Canterbury Tales: The Prioress' Tale: The Canterbury Tales was written in the late 14th century as a set of stories told by a group of people while on a pilgrimage from London to Canterbury. In this work, Chaucer introduces the reader to several different types and classes of people who have set out for a similar purpose. Antisemitism abounds in the Prioress' Tale.
Emma Lazarus
One of the first successful Jewish American authors, Emma Lazarus was part of the late nineteenth century New York literary elite and was celebrated in her day as an important American poet. In her later years, she wrote bold, powerful poetry and essays protesting the rise of antisemitism and arguing for Russian immigrants' rights. She called on Jews to unite and create a homeland in Palestine before the title Zionist had even been coined. Top Photo: Emma Lazarus, Engraving by T. Johnson from The New York Historical Society

Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty celebrated her 100th birthday on October 28, 1986. The Statue is made of sheet copper, stands 151 feet high on Liberty Island in the New York Harbor. She is assembled atop a 154 foot high pedestal. Under her arm she holds a tablet with the inscription, "July 4, 1776" (in Roman numerals) and at her feet are broken shackles. Inside the pedestal, on a bronze tablet, is a poem, written in 1883, by Emma Lazarus, The New Colossus The people of France gave the Statue to the people of the United States over one hundred years ago in recognition of the friendship established during the American Revolution. Over the years, the Statue of Liberty has grown to include freedom and democracy as well as this international friendship. France had provided arms, ships, money, and men to the American colonies during the American Revolution. Some Frenchmen even became high-ranking officers in the American army, most notably the Marquis de Lafayette, a close friend of George Washington. And long since had admired America's courage and democratic government.

New York, NY Places Pictures Faces Tips ... Books "Give me your tired your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore, Send them, the homeless, tempest-tost to me: I lift my light beside the golden door!" Emma Lazarus , "The New Colossus", 1886 America is not a nation of one culture, ethnic group, race or nationality. No one but the Native Americans can claim this country as their place or origin. Many American families can trace their roots to New York City and the Ellis Island immigration center. Our first encounter with New York City was only one day, so after Thanksgiving in Ohio with family, we returned to the Big Apple for several days of exploration. Since we were staying in New Jersey, we drove to Staten Island and rode the ferry into Manhattanfour times! This gave us many opportunities to see the Statue of Liberty in all kinds of weather and times of day. It is quite a piece of workmanship. We know why the thousands of immigrants who entered the country in New York were inspired by this icon of Americanism. Our history studies came alive as we spent a day at Ellis and Liberty Islands and learned about the experience of 12 million people that entered America through New York from 1892 to 1954.

Carole S. Kessner
In the last decades of the 18th century, when America was a young republic, the novel was dismissed as an inferior literary form, of dubious moral value. Yet a member of the American branch of the prestigious English Franks family, one Isaac Franks, a New Yorker and veteran of the Revolutionary War, rose to defend the lowly novel. Found among the papers of this highly cultivated gentleman was a handwritten defense entitled “On Novel Reading,” dating from 1800. Franks was an avid novel reader and had come to the conclusion that “[i]gnorance and malignity may decry this species of writing; but in my opinion, the names Cervantes, Fielding, Richardson, Smollett, Roche, and Burney will and ought to command the admiration of those who possess feeling, discernment, and taste.”2
The Jews of early America may have been avid readers, but they were not yet writers of novels. The very first evidence of creative literary activity comes from the pen of the Charleston-born Penina Moise (1797-1880), whose volume of verse, Fancy’s Sketch Book, published in 1833, was the first book of poetry by a Jew — male or female — to be published in America. Though her verse was not especially inspired, it is worth noting that at a time when most Jews avoided writing about Jewish subjects (particularly in non-Jewish publications), in 1820, Moise contributed a poem to the Southern Patriot that prefigures Emma Lazarus’s famous sonnet affixed to the Statue of Liberty:
