John Henry Lawson was born out of captivity on June 16, 1837 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was a region where Quaker Abolitionist philosophies had a strong influence. Little is known of his formative years, however as a young adult, he immediately volunteered for the Union Navy once the call for soldiers was made. He was one of the first Black Pennsylvanians to volunteer and was given the entry rank of Landsman. Though without seafaring experience, he was assigned aboard the USS Hartford commanded by Rear Admiral David G. Farragut. Aboard the USS Hartford, Landsman John Henry Lawson was assigned to the shell whip on the deck just below the main gun station. From this position, he assisted with the successful battle for the city of New Orleans. He was a part of Major General Ulysses S. Grant's offensive against Vicksburg, Mississippi, that led to the joining of Union forces to take the Confederate stronghold at Port Hudson, Louisiana. It was, however, the battle against Confederate Fort Morgan at Mobile Bay, Alabama, on August 5, 1864 that earned Landsman Lawson along with crewmate, Landsman Wilson Brown, a Congressional Medal of Honor for service to the country. The battle was a fierce one with the USS Hartford leading a battery of fourteen ships past three enemy forts. It was attacked directly by the Confederate ship, The Tennessee. Enemy gun shells bombarded the ship instantly killing four men and knocking Lawson unconscious. When medical assistance tried to help, he refused to go below deck for treatment saying, "The guns must be served first!" Thus with a severely wounded leg, he went back to his duty of supplying the gunmen with shells.

    77. Historic Bath - John Lawson
    — John Lawson — Explorer, Historian, and CoFounder of Bath. A WRITER ANDHISTORIAN A gentleman by birth, John Lawson was a well educated man.
    http://www.ah.dcr.state.nc.us/sections/hs/bath/lawson.htm
Explorer, Historian, and Co-Founder of Bath A dventurer John Lawson booked passage for the New World and sailed from Cowes, England on May 1, 1700. An acquaintance who had been to America assured Lawson " that Carolina was the best country I could go to ," and the young traveler was eager to see Britain's colony in the New World. After a harried ocean voyage lasting nearly three months, Lawson's ship put in at New York Harbor. In late August, following a brief stay in New York, Lawson sailed for the bustling colonial port of Charleston. By December, the young adventurer had been given a daunting task. The Lords Proprietors—wealthy Englishmen appointed by the Crown to govern the settlement of Carolina—assigned John Lawson to conduct a reconnaissance survey of the interior of the province. The Carolina backcountry at that time was an unknown and forbidding place. There were no adequate maps, and little was known about the Native American inhabitants of the region—including their attitude toward English settlers. THE LAWSON EXPEDITION
O n December 28, 1700, Lawson—with a party of five Englishmen and various Indian guides picked up along the way—set out on a brave journey through the wastes of Carolina. Following the Santee and Wateree Rivers through southern Carolina, Lawson's party met with members of several Native American tribes in the region, including the Santee, Congaree, Wateree, and Waxhaw Indians.

    John Lawson Exhibit
One of the most interesting and yet enigmatic figures of colonial North Carolina history is John Lawson. Though he was an explorer, surveyor, land speculator, fur trader, naturalist, ethnographer, and writer, all that is really known about Lawson occurred during an eleven-year period, from when he arrived in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1700 until his death at the hands of the Tuscarora Indians of North Carolina’s Neuse River region in 1711. And even in this period, the record of Lawson’s life leaves many gaps. John Lawson: Imagining a Life presents several of the documents through which Lawson’s contemporaries as well as later historians and writers have tried to decipher who John Lawson was.
For ease of navigation within this exhibit, the digital resources have been grouped into three categories: Adventurer
    Explorer, writer, surveyer Entrepreneur
    Court proceedings, claims, trading Naturalist
Plant specimens Users can return to any of these groupings from any part of the exhibit. Read More about John Lawson: Imagining a Life For Further Reading Chronology of John Lawson’s Life Textual Note ... East Carolina University
