Title page of Lawson's History of Carolina A native Londoner, John Lawson (d. 1711), sailed to South Carolina, in August, 1700, to assume an appointment as Surveyor-General of North Carolina. Although his origins remain obscure, he appears to have had a solid scientific education and was sufficiently elevated socially to append "gent." to his name, no meaningless appendage in the England of Queen Anne. The History of Carolina Section on Indians from
    Lawson's History of Carolina
Lawson's History of Carolina , however, lived longer than Lawson himself. An account of his first sojourn in the Carolinas, the History covers a broad swath of territory in more than one sense, surveying the landscape, the possibilities for European settlement, and the native plants and animals, and placing a special emphasis upon the Indian inhabitants of the region. Balancing the desire to promote his colony with careful observation, and pitting overt credulity against observational rigor, Lawson's History at times presents some seemingly odd natural facts. Characteristically, he reported that rattlesnakes "have the power or art (I know not which to call it) to charm squirrels, hares, partridges, or any such thing, in such manner that they run directly into their mouths." His science, however, was perfectly adequate by contemporary standards, and ran directly into the mouths of his readership at home, enjoying three English and two German editions before 1722.

Washington, DC, 20001 Mr. Chairman and members of the Subcommittee, I am John Lawson, President and CEO of the Association of Public Television Stations (APTS). Our member stations—among the last of the locally controlled media outlets left in this country—see digital conversion as a life and death issue for public television. So, I appreciate this opportunity to testify before you today. I would like to update you on the progress of our local stations in the digital transition, outline some of our continuing challenges that this Subcommittee is in a position to help us meet, and describe some of the exciting new services that digital television (DTV) enables. These include education, high-speed services to Rural America, and emergency communications to support homeland security.
Public Stations: Leading the Broadcast Industry into the Digital Age
Our members, the local public television stations, respect and applaud the leadership of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce in advancing the digital transition. Our stations are bullish on DTV. They have plans to introduce a new generation of digital services to our communities. And they take the May 1, 2003 transmission deadline for public stations very seriously. So I think you will find our stations are doing all they can to begin digital service. We want to work with the Committee to continue to do our part to stimulate the digital transition.

Celebrities and their Faith Mark Lawson speaks with Hollywood movie star John Travolta, a high profile member of the Church of Scientology, about his beliefs and his faith. Originally transmitted as part of "The Big Question" series) Mark Lawson You have had two spells of being very hot in Hollywood. When you were growing up was being famous something that you wanted to be? John Travolta I never looked at it that way. What I wanted very much was to become an actor and a performer, even at age 6, 7 8. It was very much part of my agenda. I enjoyed, tremendously, entertaining people. Mark Lawson You come from a big Italian, Irish family. It was a Catholic family, what impression did that have on you? John Travolta I have to be honest with you although I was brought up a Catholic I wasn’t sure I understood it. I felt the confession aspect of it was good but I didn’t know that you were actually supposed to confess things that you did. I thought you were supposed to make up things that you did to get through confession. Now I realise that is probably a very good thing, that if someone really wanted to unload their heart and their mind, they should go and do it. Mark Lawson Were your parents very strict about things like about attending Mass and so on?

TESTIMONY OF JOHN CHARLES MOFFITT Mr. STRIPLING. Did you ever join any organizations while you were in Hollywood in connection with being a writer for the motion-picture industry? After we had been in that organization some months we were invited to what turned out to be a more or less star chamber meeting, an inner corps meeting. It took place in the home of Mr. Frank Tuttle, a director. Mr. Herbert Biberman, who had been responsible for my being in the Anti-Nazi League, was there, as was his wife, Miss Gail Sondergaard, an actress. Donald Ogden Stewart was also one of those present. . . . Mr. STRIPLING. Would you give the committee an account of the activities that you observed as a member during those 6 weeks? Mr. STRIPLING. Would you identify Mr. Lawson? Mr. MOFFITT. Yes, sir. Mr. STRIPLING. He is a writer, is he not? Mr. MOFFITT. John Howard Lawson is a writer. He was the first president of the Screen Writers Guild. It has been testified before the Tenney committee of the California legislature that Mr. Lawson was sent to Los Angeles by the Communist Party for the purpose of organizing Communist activities in Hollywood. It was testified by a former secretary of the Communist Party for Los Angeles County. . . . Mr. STRIPLING. We will go back to your activities in the Anti-Nazi League.
