Preface Most of the verses contained in this volume were first published in the Sydney `Bulletin'; others in the Brisbane `Boomerang', Sydney `Freeman's Journal', `Town and Country Journal', `Worker', and `New Zealand Mail', whose editors and proprietors I desire to thank for past kindnesses and for present courtesy in granting me the right of reproduction in book form. `In the Days When the World was Wide' was written in Maoriland and some of the other verses in Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia. The dates of original publication are given in the Table of Contents. Those undated are now printed for the first time. HENRY LAWSON.

HENRY LAWSON Henry Lawson was an Australian poet and writer. Many believe he was the first poet to capture the Australian way of life. And today, Henry Lawson's work is an inspiration to many Australians. (Poem read aloud) ""The ladies are coming", the super says to the shearers sweltering there, and 'the ladies' means in the shearing shed..."don't cut 'em too bad. Don't swear." The ghost of a pause in the shed's rough heart, and lower is bowed each head, then nothing is heard save a whispered word, and the roar of the shearing shed." Henry Lawson was born in 1867, on a goldfield in rural New South Wales. His father was mining there, and times were tough. The Lawsons were very poor. Henry didn't get a good education, but his mother gave him lots of books. Henry was a shy, sensitive child. He wasn't like most bush boys. Even his mother thought he was a bit strange. When he was nine years of age, Henry got an ear infection and went partly deaf. By the time he was fourteen years old he was totally deaf. The kids at school tormented Henry and he became more of a loner. But his made him even better at observing people...looking at the way they act.

THE DAYS WHEN WE WENT SWIMMING by Henry Lawson (1867 - 1922) The breezes waved the silver grass, Waist-high along the siding, And to the creek we ne'er could pass Three boys on bare-back riding; Beneath the sheoaks in the bend The waterhole was brimming - Do you remember yet, old friend, The times we "went in swimming"? The days we "played the wag" from school - Joys shared - and paid for singly - The air was hot, the water cool - And naked boys are kingly! With mud for soap the sun to dry - A well planned lie to stay us, And dust well rubbed on neck and face Lest cleanliness betray us. And you'll remember farmer Kutz - Though scarcely for his bounty - He leased a forty-acre block, And thought he owned the county; A farmer of the old world school, That grew men hard and grim in, He drew his water from the pool That we preferred to swim in. And do you mind when down the creek His angry way he wended, A green-hide cartwhip in his hand For our young backs intended? Three naked boys upon the sand - Half buried and half sunning - Three startled boys without their clothes Across the paddocks running. We've had some scares, but we looked blank When, resting there and chumming, One glanced by chance upon the bank And saw the farmer coming! And home inmpressions linger yet Of cups of sorrow brimming; I hardly think that we'll forget The last day we went swimming.

Australian Poetry When I think of great Australian poet's the names A. B. 'Banjo' Paterson Henry Lawson and Dorothea Mackellar spring to mind. This is just a very small collection of their works. Andrew Barton ('Banjo') Paterson Andrew Barton Paterson (1864 - 1941) was most famous for his stirring Bush Ballads . 'The Banjo', the name of a racehorse his father once owned, was the pen-name used by Paterson when he began contributing verses to The Bulletin, an influential newspaper of the time. His first big success was 'Clancy of the Overflow' which appeared in 1889. Paterson was born 17 February 1864, at Narambla, New South Wales. He was the son of a Scottish immigrant and the eldest of seven children. His younger years were spent near Yass in NSW. He attended Sydney Grammar School, but left at the age of 16. Paterson sat unsuccessfully for a university scholarship and entered a lawyer's office as an articled clerk - later becoming managing clerk and then a partner in the firm, Street and Paterson. Banjo Paterson was commissioned by the Sydney Morning Herald and became a successful journalist and war correspondent during the Boer War in 1899, and the Boxer Rebellion in China, in 1901.

He was the son of Louisa Lawson, who is famous for working for women's rights. Henry often wrote about the hard lives of poor country people in Australia. His own life was a hard one, starting with his birth in a bark hut with a dirt floor. The family had very little money and Lawson's father was often away. Lawson's stories were very popular and taught city people a lot about life in the country. Some people could not understand why he wrote about such ordinary Australians but most people enjoyed the mixture of humour and sadness in his stories. His life is honoured in street and park names in many places, including Sydney. The town of Lawson in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales is named after him. Short Story Classics Henry Lawson The Hairy Man by Henry Lawson Dave and his mates camped in an old deserted slab and bark hut which happened to stand on the ground. It was a lonely place, which stood in a dark stringy-bark bush, the nearest house being the hut of a timber-getter and his family, about two miles along the track on the Home Rule side. Never were two souls more grateful. Bush mate-ship is a grand thing, drunk or sober. Andy promptly took charge of the whisky, and proceeded to dole out judicious doses at decent intervals. Jack, who was a sandy-complexioned young fellow with the expression of a born humorist, had some news. Andy paused impressively, and stared at Jack. They went back to the hut, and managed a cup of coffee. Presently they got on to ghost and Hairy Man yarns again. Just as the storm began to hold up a little, they heard a louder pattering outside, and a bang at the door. The door was of hardwood boards with wide cracks; Andy rose to open it, but squinted through a crack first. Then he snatched the big crowbar from the corner, dug the foot of it into the earth floor, and jammed the pointed head under a cross piece of the door; he did the same with a smaller crowbar, and looked wildly round for more material for a barricade. They quickly got to the door and squinted through the cracks. One squint was sufficient. It was the Hairy Man right enough. He was about as tall as an ordinary man, but seemed twice as broad across the shoulders. He had long arms, and was covered with hair, face and all. He had a big, ugly mouth, and wild, bloodshot eyes. So they helped Andy to barricade the door.

Short Story Classics Henry Lawson The Drover's Wife by Henry Lawson THE two-roomed house is built of round timber, slabs, and stringy-bark, and floored with split slabs. A big bark kitchen standing at one end is larger than the house itself, veranda included. The drover, an ex-squatter, is away with sheep. His wife and children are left here alone. The gaunt, sun-browned bushwoman dashes from the kitchen, snatches her baby from the ground, holds it on her left hip, and reaches for a stick. The youngster comes reluctantly, carrying a stick bigger than himself. Then he yells, triumphantly: She has an eye on the corner, and a green sapling club laid in readiness on the dresser by her side; also her sewing basket and a copy of the . She has brought the dog into the room. His mother asks him how many times she has told him not to swear. He has his club with him under the bedclothes, and Jacky protests Jacky shuts up. And Jacky protests drowsily. Presently Tommy asks: Near midnight. The children are all asleep and she sits there still, sewing and reading by turns. From time to time she glances round the floor and wall-plate, and, whenever she hears a noise, she reaches for the stick. The thunderstorm comes on, and the wind, rushing through the cracks in the slab wall, threatens to blow out her candle. She places it on a sheltered part of the dresser and fixes up a newspaper to protect it. At every flash of lightning, the cracks between the slabs gleam like polished silver. The thunder rolls, and the rain comes down in torrents.
