    Henry Lawson (1867-1922) A Prouder Man Than You After All Taking His Chance The Drover's Sweetheart ... The Free-Selector's Daughter
    A Prouder Man Than You If you fancy that your people came of better stock than mine,
    If you hint of higher breeding by a word or by a sign,
    If you're proud because of fortune or the clever things you do
    Then I'll play no second fiddle: I'm a prouder man than you! If you think that your profession has the more gentility,
    And that you are condescending to be seen along with me;
    If you notice that I'm shabby while your clothes are spruce and new
    You have only got to hint it: I'm a prouder man than you! If you have a swell companion when you see me on the street,
    And you think that I'm too common for your toney friend to meet,
    So that I, in passing closely, fail to come within your view
    Then be blind to me for ever: I'm a prouder man than you! If your character be blameless, if your outward past be clean, While 'tis known my antecedents are not what they should have been

    Briefly Henry Lawson lived in the country on a selection in Sapling Gully approximately 6 kms. from Mudgee in New South Wales. This area became the setting for many of Lawson's poems and stories. He had a terrific gift of being able to describe the Australian bush. Hampered by deafness at the age of nine and by family problems he left school at the age of 14. His mother Louisa Lawson an active feminist instilled in him a love of books this helped compensate for his meagre education.

    http://www.australianstamp.com/Coin-web/feature/history/lawson.htm
    Henry LAWSON (1867-1922) Henry Lawson published his first poem in the nationalist magazine, the Bulletin, in 1887. Called 'A Song for the Republic', it was a stirring call to Australians to approach the new century with courage and commitment to the nation. Debating vehemently with that other bush poet, Banjo Patterson, Lawson was central in the move towards 'realism' in literature. Instead of a gentle, idyllic place, the Australian landscape was depicted as indifferent to its inhabitants, who were battlers - gaunt, tragic, but noble. In the process of arguing the issue, writers established an Australian writing vernacular, and paved the way for a national literature. In his depictions of self-reliant, indomitable, independent Australians, Lawson put into words the qualities that contributed to the nation's sense of self. Although Lawson had a hard and sad life, he was already, by the time of his death, a legend. He was the first Australian writer to be given a State funeral. [Note on content: Banjo Paterson and Henry Lawson were writing for
    the Sydney `Bulletin' in 1892 when Lawson suggested a `duel' of poetry
    to increase the number of poems they could sell to the paper.
    It was apparently entered into in all fun, though there are reports
    that Lawson was bitter about it later. `Up the Country' and `The City Bushman', included in this selection, were two of Lawson's contributions to the debate. Please note that this is the revised edition of 1900. Therefore, even though this book was originally published in 1896, it includes two poems not published until 1899 (`The Sliprails and the Spur' and `Past Carin'').] First Edition printed February 1896, Reprinted August 1896, October 1896, March 1898, and November 1898; Revised Edition, January 1900;

    Summary
    Henry Lawson 1867-1922 "Henry Lawson holds a unique place in Australian and possibly in world literature. Alone of creative writers in this country, he lived to see the emergent nation adopt his interpretation of its way of life as equivalent to a sense of identity. By a singular and fortuitous combination of author, time, place and circumstance he welded his ideal of mateship, as a code, to the world's most sparsely settled continent - a land in which men measured distance not in miles but in time and tribulation, as perhaps they measured life itself. He achieved it in poetry and the short story, in forms that went straight to the hearts of his readers, as they have done ever since. "Lawson belongs to the select band of authors who did not have to be rescued from obscurity by scholars and critics, although their abiding interest and, sometimes bewilderment, has followed in the wake of generations of readers who continue to read him for the simple pleasure it gives them. To write one's way into the hearts and minds of a people is given to few authors - Lawson is one of them." Walter Stone

    Abbotsford
    Abbotsford was originally part of Five Dock Farm, subdivided in 1837. It takes its name from Abbotsford House which was built in 1878 by Sir Arthur Renwick (1837-1908), a doctor and politician. He named the house after the English village in which Sir Walter Scott lived. The names Marmion, Rokeby and Montrose Roads in Abbotsford all recall books written by Sir Walter Scott. Abbotsford House was for many years the offices of the Nestle's factory which operated from 1918-1976. The noted Australian writer Henry Lawson (1867-1922) lived in a cottage on the Great North Road, Abbotsford shortly before his death in 1922. The cottage, located opposite Abbotsford Public School, has since been demolished. The author's association with the area is commemorated by the Henry Lawson Community Hall at Abbotsord Public School, Henry Lawson Avenue and Henry Lawson Park. The Aboriginal name for the area was Bigi Bigi. Further information: Australian Dictionary of Biography.
