    The Things We Dare not Tell
    The fields are fair in autumn yet, and the sun's still shining there, But we bow our heads and we brood and fret, because of the masks we wear; Or we nod and smile the social while, and we say we're doing well, But we break our hearts, oh, we break our hearts! for the things we must not tell.
    There's the old love wronged ere the new was won, there's the light of long ago; There's the cruel lie that we suffer for, and the public must not know. So we go through life with a ghastly mask, and we're doing fairly well, While they break our hearts, oh, they kill our hearts! do the things we must not tell.
    We see but pride in a selfish breast, while a heart is breaking there; Oh, the world would be such a kindly world if all men's hearts lay bare! We live and share the living lie, we are doing very well, While they eat our hearts as the years go by, do the things we dare not tell.
    We bow us down to a dusty shrine, or a temple in the East, Or we stand and drink to the world-old creed, with the coffins at the feast;

    LAWSON, HENRY (1867-1922) Henry Lawson is perhaps, alongside Banjo Paterson, Australia's best known poet and storyteller. Born on 17 June 1867 near Grenfell, New South Wales, of struggling gold field parents and afflicted for most of his life with deafness - and later alcoholism - he epitomised the radical, nationalist and white-settler bush literary tradition of the 1890s.
    His first poem, A song of the Republic , is an appeal for a new Australian social order and appeared in the Sydney Bulletin of October 1887. Prose and other poetic pieces also appeared in the same magazine (and many other journals and newspapers) until his death. These were collected into books which were, and continue to be, very popular - particularly While the Billy Boils (1896) and Joe Wilson and his Mates
    The republican Lawson of the Federation era became an enthusiastic supporter of Australia's connection with the British Empire during and after World War 1. His radicalism is defined in Manning Clark's

Australian writer and poet, Henry Lawson, was born on the Grenfell goldfields in New South Wales on 17 June, 1867, the son of a Norwegian seaman, Niels Larson, who later changed his name to Peter Lawson.
      Henry's mother, Louisa, was an activist for women's rights and published the feminist newspaper "The Dawn" for many years.
      In Henry's early years, the family lived on a poor selection in the Mudgee district. Lawson suffered from deafness and was often teased as a result.
      His parents separated in 1883, and it was then that Louisa went to Sydney and began publishing "The Dawn".

He was the first Australian writer granted a state funeral. Lawson wrote short stories and poems with sympathy and humour. He depicted Australian men and women and Australian rural life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. 'Run, Andy! run!' they shouted back at him. 'Run!!! Look behind you, you fool!' Andy turned slowly and looked, and there, close behind him, was the retriever with the cartridge in his mouth wedged into his broadest and silliest grin. And that wasn't all. The dog had come round the fire to Andy, and the loose end of the fuse had trailed and waggled over the burning sticks into the blaze; Andy had slit and nicked the firing end of the fuse well, and now it was hissing and spitting properly. Andy's legs started with a jolt; his legs started before his brain did, and he made after Dave and Jim. And the dog followed Andy.

    Three bushmen one morning rode up to an inn,
    And one of them called for the drinks with a grin;
    They'd only returned from a trip to the North,
    And, eager to greet them, the landlord came forth.
    He absently poured out a glass of Three Star. And set down that drink with the rest on the bar. `There, that is for Harry,' he said, `and it's queer, 'Tis the very same glass that he drank from last year; His name's on the glass, you can read it like print, He scratched it himself with an old piece of flint; I remember his drink - it was always Three Star' - And the landlord looked out through the door of the bar. He looked at the horses, and counted but three:

About the author Voices From the Past Henry Lawson Drover's Wife Out Back The Glass on the Bar About the author Our Sponsor Henry Lawson Caring About Our Country Henry Hertzberg Lawson (1867-1922) Australian poet and writer Henry Lawson's difficulties in life shaped his writings and are what makes them an inspiration to many Australians. Henry Lawson was born on June 17, 1867, on a goldfield in rural New South Wales where his father was a miner. The family was very poor and although he didn't get a good education, his mother made sure he had books to read. Lawson's life was difficult from the beginning. At age 9 he went partially deaf as a result of an ear infection. That progressed until at age 14 he was totally deaf. As a shy, sensitive child growing up, he was tormented by children at school. As a result, Henry became a loner spending his time watching instead of being involved with those around him. This provided the pattern for his life and the reason his poems, many feel, capture the Australian way of life.
