Level of description: Fonds
Extent: 59 boxes, c.80 volumes/portfolios Context Administrative/biographical history: The D.H. Lawrence Collection is a complex gathering together of different groups of material by and relating to the writer. It reflects the practice begun by the University Library in the 1930s of combining all resources on Lawrence in a single subject Collection. Some of the sub-groups in the Collection are themselves natural archival units, while others are purely artificial and contain series of purchases and gifts of particular types of material. The development of the Collection has been paralleled by the development of other D.H. Lawrence resources by the University Library. The Library also houses a Lawrence Special Collection of published works, including first editions, periodical literature and critical literature. There are significant overlaps between the printed and manuscript Lawrence Collections; the latter, for instance, includes published works which may be annotated or have strong associations with original material in the archival group. More recent manuscript acquisitions with a natural archival identity have been given their own reference codes, and are not part of the main Lawrence Collection.

Biographisches
(R. A. Aldington) Die Mutter — unduldsam, bigott, abstinenzlerisch, Gedichte schreibend, gebildet tuend — forderte die ausschließliche Zuwendung ihres Sohnes. Sie versuchte, erste Liebesbeziehungen zu unterbinden.

INTRODUCTION
One of the most useful applications of records is to define organisations of data in which distinct items are linked together using a reference to another record (sometimes called pointers or access values in other languages). The simplest general form of a group of linked records is a linked list (more complex forms include trees of various types). In a linked list each record includes a reference to a following record. The final record has the value null indicating that the last record in the linked list has been reached. Figure 1 shows a linked list of date records of the form described earlier. Figure 1 The standard mechanism for processing linked lists is to step through the list, using some form of loop construct, until the terminating null reference is reached.
EXAMPLE
Table 1 shows a linked list of FamousPerson records. The code includes methods to:
  • Build up the list so that records are order alphabetically according to last name and first name.
  • Code to output the list to the screen.

Lawrence's life after World War I was marked with continuous and restless wandering. Lawrence started to write THE LOST GIRL (1920) in Italy. He had settle with Frieda in Gargano. In those days they were so poor that they could not afford even a newspaper. The novel dealt with one of Lawrence's favorite subjects - a girl marries a man of a much lower social status, against the advice of friends, and finds compensation in his superior warmth and understanding. He dropped the novel for some years and rewrote the story in an old Sicilian farm-house near Taormina in 1920. During the First World War Lawrence and his wife were unable to obtain passports and were target of constant harassment from the authorities. They were accused of spying for the Germans and officially expelled from Cornwall in 1917. The Lawrences were not permitted to emigrate until 1919, when their years of wandering began.

Children's Books
The importance of children's books in the reading development of a child is undisputed. And since the only way most children can learn to be good readers is to read regularly, it is important to encourage children to read from the beginning. The importance of reading aloud children's books cannot be overemphasized. By reading aloud to your children, you are emphasizing the joy of reading, introducing them to new vocabulary words and ideas, expanding their knowledge, and learning more about their interests. Often, hearing a story from children's books can foster a child's interest in learning more by reading independently. At some point, you might pick children's books at, not above, your child's reading level, and take turns reading portions aloud to one another.
One of the most important roles a parent or other caring adult can play is as a good role mode in encouraging the reading of children's books. It's difficult for children to believe in the importance of reading if there are few books in the home or they never see their parents reading, and they never go to the library. Reading for enjoyment is not enjoyable for children if they are forced to read. It's important to help your children find children's books at the right reading level on subjects that they like. Once you find children's books, you can encourage your children's interest by reading some of the book to them. Taking turns reading in reading children's book always works. If the children's book is sufficiently interesting, you may find a child reading ahead by themselves.

David Herbert Lawrence (1885-1930) grew up amidst the strife between his genteel and educated mother and his coarse miner father. As a youth in the Nottinghamshire mining village of Eastwood, Lawrence resented the rough ways of his drunken father, and adopted his mother's refined values as his own. Diligence brought him a scholarship to the local high school. Upon graduation, he worked as a clerk and as an elementary school teacher, and, in 1908, earned a teaching certificate from Nottingham University. He published a group of poems in 1909 and The White Peacock , his first novel, in 1911. He resigned his teaching position to devote himself to writing in 1912. That same year he ran away with Frieda von Richthofen Weekley (the sister of the World War I German ace fighter pilot), who left behind a husband and three children. They were married following her divorce in 1914.

Lawrence, D. H.
David Herbert Lawrence (1885-1930) produced great quantities of polemical prose during the last decade and a half of his life, dispersing it throughout his fictions, in his letters, and in book reviews, literary essays, and monograph-length critical and philosophical studies. The most significant of these texts include Studies in Classic American Literature (1924); "Study of Thomas Hardy," published posthumously in Phoenix; several essays on the novel, including "Why the Novel Matters," "Surgery for the Novelor a Bomb," and "Morality and the Novel"; an important piece entitled "Pornography and Obscenity"; the politico-philosophical essays in Reflections on the Death of a Porcupine; the quasi-psychoanalytic texts "Fantasia of the Unconscious" and "Psychoanalysis and the Unconscious"; a series of essays on sexual politics called "A Propos of Lady Chatterley's Lover "; and the quasi-mystical text Apocalypse.
Lawrence articulates in his art a vitalistic metaphysics, obliquely and partially derived from Friedrich Nietzsche and Sigmund Freud , that in his essays produces a revisionary tool for criticizing social and cultural forces that attenuate animal vitality, repress sexuality, or thwart individual potentiality and power. By making organic "quickness" a chief category of value, Lawrence's literary and cultural criticism relies on an
