This is the ancient system of Chinese wisdom often used in oracular divination. It consists of 64 hexagrams of solid and broken lines. The hexagram is determined by tossing three coins, three times by the inquirer. The I-Ching is based upon an entire philosophy which is the unified and cyclical universe, the future develops according to fixed laws and numbers. In other words, there is no "coincidence" or "chance", but only casuality. The I-Ching does not give definitive answers (similar to Tarot ) but enables the inquirer to look within themselves for answers. Psychiatrist Carl jung appreciated the I-Ching as it demonstrated the principal of "Synchronicity." (Meaningful coincidences) The I-Ching philosophy itself is thought to date back thousands of years. But the hexagrams according to tradition were developed by Emperor Fu-hsi around 2852 BC. Solid lines on the hexagrams represent Yang (male) and the broken lines Yin. (Female) Originally Fu-hsi developed 8 Tri-grams which were then doubled into 64 hexagrams by King Wen in 1143 BC. This then inspired Lau-Tzu (604 BC - 531 BC) who used it for writing of "Tau Teh Ching" which is the central text of Taoism. Confucius (C.551 BC - 479 BC) was also inspired in his life and added 10 commentaries which are known as the "Ten Wings" appendices. In 213 BC Emperor Chin had numerous books burnt amongst them were the Confucian commentaries to the I-Ching although some copies survived. The final writings connected with the I-Ching did not reach the west until the 19th Century when it was translated into German and then into English. The publication of these translations included a forward by Jung.

The Dachshund in Philosophy
Sadly, most philosophers do not permit themselves to be photographed, so the photographic record of the philosopher/dachshund relationship is quite limited. However, it is common knowledge that philosophers ancient and modern have often adopted the stoic dachshund to fuel their philosophical ruminations. Plato, author of The Republic , developed many of his philosophical underpinnings watching his dachshunds. " If I cannot see the bone, does it not still remain where I burried it ," he asked, wisely considering the world from the perspective of his beloved dog. But the influence of the dachshund on western philosophy did not stop with Plato. Philosopher and early psychotherapist Carl Jung, credited for his powerful revisionist scholarhip of the early work of his peer and teacher, Sigmund Freud, is said to have developed his revolutionary concept of the personality "archetype" from his observations of the simple moods and character traits of his pet dachshunds. It was through the process of training and disciplining his own dachshunds, that great french philosopher Michel Foucault (who considered himself a historian, rather than a philosopher) developed the underlying theses for his masterwork

Laozi (Lao Tzu) Laozi (Lao Tzu: dates uncertain. Speculation ranges from from 600 BC to 200 BC) is, we assume, the author of the Daode Jing Tao Te Ching ), the most beloved and widely translated Chinese philosophical text. The figure of Laozi has always been shrouded in mystery. It deepens the more we discover about the texts. Tradition regarded Laozi as Confucius' (6 th Century BC) teacher and the "founder" of Daoism, the "doubt tradition" movement in modern China gave influential arguments for dating the text to the middle "Warring States" period (4 th Century BC). The discovery of 1 st Century BC version of the text suggested the text was in flux over a long period of time. A. C. Graham argued that the text probably became important only after Zhuangzi died (ca. 295 BC). Scholars in China, on the contrary, have reverted to the traditional dating placing Laozi before Confucius. Many scholars dismiss Laozi as mythological or use his name as shorthand for "the author(s) of the Daode Jing ."

Oneof the best books I've ever read! John Lutz and David August did an unbelievable job at writing Final Seconds. I was blown away by the suspense and mystery of this novel. They should make more books together. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a good read. (Final Seconds would make a great movie!) Wheres the movie? Lots of action that makes you read this book more than once! I hope they make a movie out of this! Holy Smokes This book is great. It has a lot of twists and turns. It keeps you reading right to the end. There was a couple of times where I felt bad for bad guy and thought that he was going to prove victorious over the good guy. It really is suspense filled. Read it. Scorcher Published in Audio Cassette by Bookcassette Sales (September, 1991)

that's off! Average review score: Lifeless When are they going to stop letting writers read great books and hire an actor who has some voice quality? This was my second try at an audio Tao Te Ching and both were totally lacking in feeling. The background chords on this set a meditative mood and the translation is traditional, not an "interpretation", but Muresan's voice is hopeless. He sounds like he's reading the Wall Street Journal. Great!!! This reading comes from the heart. Its tone and cadence are pure enlightenment. If you don't believe me, just give it five minutes. At first this version seems understated but the more one listens to it the deeper it takes you. It is truly how the Tao has been passed along through the ages. The tone of other Tao readings created by famous actors and thespians are greatly lacking in insight compared to this beauty. This is authentic!! I hope you are with us for many more decades Lance. Can't wait so see what you will create next. Thank you, Lance!

From: Jonathan B. Marder ( marder@agri.huji.ac.il
Date: Sun Jun 11 2000 - 21:31:19 BST Hi all,
I want to share something that I read recently that nearly blew me
away. I assume that other Pirsig fans will appreciate it:
"Love is the relationship between level of reality.
Love produces harmony and is the ruler of the arts. As artists we seek
to achieve, in our art, a state of love.
Love is the attempt to impose order on chaos, meaning on absurdity.
It is inventive, double-natured, holding the keys to everything.
There is love in the cosmos.
Love was born before, and is more potent than, the laws of nature. Love raises us above the limitations of our bodies and gives us free will.

The Eagle Claw Story
The roots of Eagle Claw reach far back in Chinese history to the Shaolin temple of Northern China, founded during the Sung Dynasty it has travelled down through the ages reaching the 20th century in its entirety. A blend of three ancient kung fu styles, Eagle Claw is a classical system of Kung Fu, a complete and rounded system, encompassing increasingly difficult free hand set, martial tumbling, gymnastic routines, and numerous weapons. Master Gini Lau is the daughter of the late Great Grand Master Lau Fat Mang, a famous Eagle Claw Master and honored war hero from China, who was probably one the greatest Eagle Claw exponents of this century. Today's Eagle Claw descends directly from three systems of Northern Kung Fu, the first being Chin'na (joint locking) developed by the famous General Yueh Fei (1103 - 41) of the Sung Dynasty. The General Yueh Fei although not himself a product of Shaolin Temple was extensively trained by the Shaolin Priest Jao Tung. During the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) one of the great periods of Chinese cultural history, a Shaolin martial monk named Li Chun famous for his abilities in Faan Tzu (martial tumbling). Li Chun chanced upon a demonstration of General Yueh Fei's Chin'na. Li Chun saw the power of Eagle Claw hand techniques as well at the beauty of the form and was determined to combine it with his own Faan Tzu. In time the monk Li Chun combined the two systems creating Northern Shaolin Ying Jow Faan Tzu. (Eagle Claw as we know it today.)

Lao Tzu meets Yin Xi, the Guardian of the Gate of Tibet. Although ascetics and hermits such as Shen Tao (who advocated that one 'abandon knowledge and discard self') first wrote of the 'Tao' it is with the sixth century B.C. philosopher Lao Tzu (or 'Old Sage' born Li Erh) that the philosophy of Taoism really began. Some scholars believe was a slightly older contemporary of Confucius (Kung-Fu Tzu, born Chiu Chung-Ni). Other scholars feel that the Tao Te Ching, is really a compilation

“Sage” – It’s Not A Herb Throughout the course of human existence, “man” has always considered himself to be the ruler of the world. All other living species were lower in the food chain and therefore are less intelligent and important. After studying the philosophies of Chuang Tzu and Taoism, I wonder whether or not that is actually true. Are we really “better” than the lizard lying on the rock or the fish in the sea? We human beings have always lived our lives wanting. . .
