Lau-Tzu
As the story goes, when he retired he was asked to write down his thoughts and thus became the founder of Taoism, which began not as a religion but as a philosophy. The words he gave us all are filled with wisdom and ambiguity-because life is neither simple nor obvious. As librarian and historian he was able to sit back and explore life and gave us a wonderful gift with his culminating thoughts that he drew together at the end. The following are some of those thoughts. Not to honor men of worth will keep the people from contention; not to value goods which are hard to come by will keep them from theft; not to display what is desirable will keep them from being unsettled of mind. Although these sayings are over 2,500 years old, to my ear they are as fresh as a newborn child. These two sayings, the one above and below, strike at the heart of what is wrong with American society today just as the words were relevant to Chinese society 2,500 years ago. There is no crime greater than having too many desires;

Posted by Nick on January 07, 19102 at 14:42:43: When I was 15, I was baptized into a pentacostal congregation.
I learned one bible lesson every week. Although I felt the lessons
were true to Christianity, I left after one year because I disliked
the atmosphere and thinking behind the church itself, but not
Christianity. But in the year that I was there, they taught me
that for a book to be considered holy scripture (or divinly inspired) it could not dispute any other part of what is already considered holy christian scripture. I believe the Tao Te Ching does not.

Life is beautiful!
A thing of beauty is a joy forever:
It's loveliness increases; it will never
Pass into nothingness; but still will keep
A bower quiet for us, and a sleep
Full of sweet dreams, and health,
and quiet breathing.
J OHN K EATS There are three things which are too wonderful for me; yeah, four things which I know not; the way of an eagle in the air the way of a serpent on a rock the way of a ship in the midst of the sea and the way of a man with a maid. Surely he will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence. Excerpt from the Article "Beat Zen, Square Zen, and Zen," originally published in Chicago Review , Summer 1958 For rather different reasons, Japanese people tend to be as uneasy in themselves as Westerners, having a sense of social shame quite as acute as our more metaphysical sense of sin. This was especially true of the class most attracted to Zen, the samurai. Ruth Benedict, in that very uneven work Chyrsanthemum and Sword , was, I think, perfectly correct in saying that the attraction of Zen to the samurai class was its power to get rid of an extremely awkward self- consciousness induced in the education of the young. Part-and-parcel of this self-consciousness is the Japanese compulsion to compete with oneself - a compulsion which turns every craft and skill into a marathon of self-discipline. Although the attraction of Zen lay in the possibility of liberation from self-consciousness, the Japanese version of Zen fought fire with fire, overcoming the "self observing the self" by bringing it to an intensity in which it exploded. How remote from the regimen of the Japanese Zen monastery are the words of the great T'ang master Lin-chi: "In Buddhism there is not place for using effort. Just be ordinary and nothing special. Eat your food, move your bowels, pass water, and when you're tired go and lie down. The ignorant will laugh at me, but the wise will understand."

    Mitchell gives us "everything I try to intuit about Jesus' life," and assures us that "scholars show a remarkable degree of consensus" with his intuitions. "I wanted to compile a gospel," the authors earnestly offers, which rejects as "polemic" those New Testament references which are not properly Buddhist, and references which we are instructed that "scholarship" rejects on the "ground base" that they are not "authentic", not "historical." Mitchell gives us Jesus the Zen master, the member of the spiritual elite, a Jesus that stands with the "other Masters" Spinoza, the Buddha, Lau-tzu. The operative ad hoc hypothesis here is that Christianity is mostly, as the author is fond of saying, "legend." We do yet find, in Mitchell's tamed revision of Jesus, a most profound body of teachings. But at what cost, what gain? Humanist revisions of Jesus have been suggested for three centuries now. They are generally exercises that must be false to the documents of history.

    Norman Duff 1st Draft, 2nd Paper Full of Sound and Fury. Keith Jenkins and Huston Smith share a common idea in their books Re-Thinking History and Forgotten Truth. The idea is as follows: The meaning that one finds in an event, or a series of events is a story, or narrative, which people both individually and collectively tell themselves and one another Huston Smith in Forgotten Truth presents the same concept: The Indian doctrine of Maya generalizes the point. The life that we see is a tissue of misreadings (99). At death man is ushered into the unimaginable expanse of a reality no longer fragmentary . . . The pretenses, rationalizations and delusions that structured and warped his days are now glaringly evident (143). In the quote above Smith is clearly stating that evolution far from being a fact, is in fact a tale, a narrative, a story told by the scientific community. Name: Courtney King

Although Leopold's book, Sand County Almanac is written more like a story while the Tao Te Ching, written by Lao-tsu, is closer to a religion, both author's seem to find common ground on areas such as conservation, consequences, greed and economics.
