ENGLISH MONARCHS
WILLIAM I reigned 1066—1087 Born around 1028, William was the illegitimate son of the Duke of Normandy and a second cousin of Edward the Confessor. When Edward died childless, the English crown was offered to Harold Godwinson, although it had previously been promised to William. Feeling cheated, he led a Norman army across the Channel and defeated Harold at Hastings in 1066. William had grown up fearing for his life and trusting no one. He imposed a harsh rule on the English, introducing the feudal system and listing the nation’s wealth in the Doomsday Book so that he could tax it heavily. He was merciless to anyone who stood in his way. Feared rather than loved, he died in 1087.
WILLIAM II
reigned 1087—1100 William was born about 1057, the second surviving son of William I. As was customary he inherited the conquered lands (England) on his brother's death in 1087. While his elder brother Robert inherited Normandy. The two of them quarrelled over the spoils until 1096, when Robert pawned Normandy to William and went to the Holy Land on a crusade. William was a hard, tough man, very like his father. He was nicknamed Rufus because of his red hair. He had little time for religion and confiscated much Church property for his own ends. Since monks largely wrote history at that time, his reputation has suffered accordingly. He died in 1100 while out hunting in the New Forest. An arrow fatally wounded him and nobody has ever known whether it was an accident or murder.

The Beginnings
Off and on, people have lived in Britain for the best part of half a million years, though the earliest evidence of human life dates from about 250,000 BC . These meagre remains, found near Swanscombe, east of London across the Thames from Tilbury, belong to one of the migrant communities whose comings and goings depended on the fluctuations of the Ice Ages. Renewed glaciation then made the area uninhabitable once more, and the next traces - mainly roughly worked flint implements - were left around 40,000 BC by cave-dwellers at Creswell Crags in Derbyshire, Kent's Cavern near Torquay and Cheddar Cave in Somerset. The last spell of intense cold began about 17,000 years ago, and it was the final thawing of this last Ice Age around 5000 BC that caused the British Isles to separate from the European mainland.
The sea barrier did nothing to stop further migrations of nomadic hunting communities, drawn by the rich forests that covered ancient Britain. In about 3500 BC a new wave of colonists arrived from the continent, probably via Ireland, bringing with them a Neolithic culture based on farming and the rearing of livestock. These tribes were the first to make some impact on their environment, clearing forests, enclosing fields, constructing defensive ditches around their villages and digging mines to obtain flint used for tools and weapons. Bosworth ~22 Aug 1485~ The Wars of the Roses was effectively an argument between two lines of the same family. Edward III (1327-1377) died of a Stroke. His third son John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster , had dominated the government during his last years , but Edward was succeeded by his grandson Richard II , only son of Edward, the Black Prince Richard was deposed in 1399 and murdered; and was succeeded by Henry IV , another grandson of Edward III by John of Gaunt Henry IV was succeeded by his son and later his grandson, Henry V and Henry VI . This was the House of Lancaster. Edward III ’s second son was Lionel, Duke of Clarence . His line had not succeeded to the throne after the deposition of Richard II because it was only represented by a single female. His grand daughter, lady Anne Mortimer , married a son of Edmund, Duke of York , the fourth son of Edward III . This was the House of York. By the time Henry VI succeeded to the throne at the age of 8 months this Yorkist line was in the ascendancy and when Henry began to suffer from bouts of madness the senior member of this line

    LEICESTERSHIRE
LEICESTERSHIRE Slates, honestones, setts and roadstone from the Charnian rocks, limestone and cement from tile Carbuniferous and Lias, and coal from the Coal Measures are the chief mineral products. AgricultureThe climate is mild, and, on account of the inland position of the county, and the absence of any very high elevations, ~he rainfall is very moderate. The soil is of a loamy character, the richest district being that east of the Soar, which is occupied by pasture, while the corn crops are grown chiefly on a lighter soil resting above the Red Sandstone formation. About nine-tenths of the total area is under cultivation. The proportion of pasture land is large and increasing. It is especially rich along the riverbanks. Dairy-farming is extensively carried on, the famous Stilton cheese being produced near Melton Mowbray. Cattle are reared in large numbers, while of sheep the New Leicester breed is well known. It was introduced by Robert Bakewell the agriculturist, who was horn near Lottghborough in 1725. He also improved the breed of horses by the importation of mares from Flanders. The county is especially famed for fox-hunting, Leicester and Melton Mowbray being favorite centres, while the kennels of the Q uorn hunt are located at Quorndon near Mount Sorrel. For this reason Leicestershire is rich in good riding horses.
