The Reformation in England
A.) The Separation of the Church of England from Rome

King Henry VIII. had married the widow of his brother Arthur, CATHERINE OF ARAGON; of their children, only a daughter, Mary, survived infancy. Remindful of the civil war (WAR OF THE ROSES, 1455-1485) that had divided England in two rival camps, Henry was determined to produce a son. However, he doubted that Catherine would bare him a son, and, having cast his eye on Anne Boleyn, he asked POPE CLEMENT VII., through the mediation of CARDINAL WOLSEY , to annul his marriage to Catherine. The latter being a close relative of Emperor CHARLES V., Pope Clement VII. did not comply.
In 1533, King Henry VIII. then pressed a council of English bishops to declare the separation of the Church of England from Rome. Archbishop of Canterbury THOMAS CRANMER now annulled Henry's marriage with Catherine, and he was free to marry Anne Boleyn. The Irish parliament in 1536/1537 followed suit, establishing the CHURCH OF IRELAND

    Background Information for
    Thomas More's Utopia

Biographical Background to the Utopia Thomas More was the son of a prominent London attorney and judge. After preliminary education at St. Andrews public school (what we would call a private school), he became a page at age 13 in the household of John Morton, Archbishop of Canter-bury. With Morton’s sponsorship, he was then sent to Oxford, where he studied Greek and Latin literature.
In 1494, More returned to London to study law and was admitted to the bar several years later. However, he remained undecided about his vocation, torn between the public life of a lawyer (and eventually a politician) and the private, meditative life of the monastery. Although he finally settled on a career of public service, he continued through his life to be attracted toward the contemplative life and practiced such penitential acts as the wearing of a hair shirt under his outer garments.
At Oxford, More was influenced by the first generation of English humanists, scholars whose embrace of classical learning was one of the first signs that the Renaissance had reached Britain. By the end of the 15th century, More was recognized as one of the greatest scholars of his time, counting among his friends English humanists like John Colet and Hugh Latimer, as well as the great Dutch humanist, Erasmus. More and Erasmus first met when the latter visited London in 1499; they quickly became close friends, and Erasmus wrote part of his most famous work

The Boy King : Edward VI and the Protestant Reformation > Customer Review #1: Tactical and strategic

Diarmaid MacCulloch should have a well merited following by now. His extremely readable books finally made Church History a fascinating subject. His mastery of theology, ecclesiology, iconography, architecture, ceremony, and other dimensions of Tudor England are unrivalled, and he weaves them into a comprehensive whole. The depth and quality of his research are exemplary, and his prose is very good literature. In this book he shows how most events which make the pace of Edward VIs reign seem frantic, were prepared but had to be postponed during Henry VIIIs last years. Even during his first year, Edwards establishment under the Duke of Somersets protectorate was reluctantly forced to appease the Emperor Charles V, the majority of lay politicians, and conservative bishops as powerful as Stephen Gardiner of Winchester. After Somersets disgrace, John Dudley, first Earl of Warwick and later Duke of Northumberland maintained a more consensual relationship with the Lords. He made peace with France and Scotland, and inaugurated a phase of political reconstruction at home, thus permitting the evangelical revolution to recover its pace.
