64. Strip Of Blue
green, Content am I to be; Glad, when is opened unto my need, Somesealike glimpse of Thee. ~~Lucy Larcom 1824-1893 ~~. Next. Home.
http://www.simplycountrygraphics.com/blue.html
A Strip Of Blue I do not own inch of land, But all I see is mine-
The orchards and the mowing fields, The lawns and gardens fine.
The winds my tax-collectors are, They bring me tithes divine,-
Wild scents and subtle essences, A tribute rare and free;
And, more magnificent than all, My window keeps for me,
A glimpse of blue immensity,- A little strip of sea.
Richer am I than he who owns, Great fleets and argosies;
I have a share in every ship, Won by the inland breeze,
To loiter on yon airy road, above the apple trees.
I freight with them my untold dreams; Each bears my own picked crew;
And nobler cargoes wait for them, Then ever India knew,- My ships that sail into the East, Across the outlet blue. Sometimes they seem like living shapes,- The people of the sky,- Guest in white raiment coming down, From Heaven, which is close by; I call them by familiar names, As one by one draws nigh, So white,so light, so spirit-like, From violet mist they bloom! The aching wastes of the unknown, Are half reclaimed from gloom Since on life's hospitable sea, All souls find sailing room.

Among Lowell Mill-Girls: A Reminiscence
By Lucy Larcom
Atlantic Monthly 48 (Nov. 1881). Lucy Larcom (1824-1893) moved with her mother and siblings to Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1836, and entered the Lowell mills at the age of twelve. She worked in the mills for about ten years. In 1846 she moved to the West where she studied and taught. Larcom returned to New England in 1854 and took a position on the faculty of Wheaton Seminary where she taught classes on subjects ranging from English to moral philosophy to botany. She became a popular writer of moralistic verse and published volumes of poetry, a memoir, and a history of Wheaton Seminary. She was also an editor of Our Young Folks, a children's magazine. This essay was written thirty-five years after Larcom left the Lowell mills, and she later expanded it into a full-length memoir, A New England Girlhood, T he scenery of the Merrimack at Lowell, while lacking the grandeur of the hill region whence the river issues, has a quiet attractiveness of its own. The slaty cliffs at Pawtucket Falls bear lingering footmarks of aboriginal history, and wear the charm of remembered beauty for those who wandered in childhood and early youth among their over-hanging hemlocks and nestling wild flowers, before the picturesqueness of the place was sacrificed to manufacturing exigencies. The country slopes gently toward the river in every direction. The principal descent of water at the Falls is about thirty feet perpendicular, after which the stream foams and tumbles over a half mile or so of winding rapids, expands into a smooth, lake-like sheet, and then, joining the slower waters of the Concord, narrows itself again between wooded hills into a less abrupt succession of falls and rapids.

    By Elena May Gudgeon
    A mangosteen tree can take up to ten years to start bearing fruit, and some never do! Out of the years bloom the eternities;
    From earth-clogged root
    Life climbs through leaf and bud by slow slow degrees,
    Till some far cycle heavenly blossom sees, And perfect fruit. - Lucy Larcom (1824-1893) Like magnificent jewels they sway on elegant brown necks waiting to be picked and caressed by the hands that planted them. Their colours dance in our eyes as we pace the markets searching for the ripest, the richest, and the plumpest. Their fragrance and flavours fill our heads with untold stories from exotic earth cultures and histories. Collectively they are the Fruits of the Season. Tropical treasures that bud and swell and sweeten as and when and how they were created to. They ripen in bursts of color and aroma, filling basket after basket during their peak months, and breathe life into our homes, our cooking and our bodies. Yes, the mango is the nominal star in Chutneywood, but the fact is all fruit can rise to the occasion when they are picked and used at peak season. However they were intended to end up - peeled, plated or pulverized - it is vital to make a mental note of their seasonality.
