Regional affection for Georgia's first "national" poet tends on occasion to reduce Sidney Lanier's Civil War-torn career to a tragic metaphor for the antebellum South. Generations of Georgians probably know Lanier best for his poems set in the natural surroundings of the state, such as The Marshes of Glynn and Song of the Chattahoochee . Ultimately, these much-anthologized gems of Lanier's fitful and tragically short poetic career make up only part of an intense literary life.
    Driven by forces of circumstance and intellect, he also produced notable redactions of Froissart's Chronicles, Malory's tales of King Arthur, a Florida travel guide sparkling from insight and first-hand research, three provocative collections of essays on English verse, the English novel, and the theoretical identity of music and poetry.

A Birthday Song. To S. G. For ever wave, for ever float and shine
Before my yearning eyes, oh! dream of mine
Wherein I dreamed that time was like a vine, A creeping rose, that clomb a height of dread
Out of the sea of Birth, all filled with dead,
Up to the brilliant cloud of Death o'erhead. This vine bore many blossoms, which were years.
Their petals, red with joy, or bleached by tears,
Waved to and fro i' the winds of hopes and fears. Here all men clung, each hanging by his spray.
Anon, one dropped; his neighbor 'gan to pray;
And so they clung and dropped and prayed, alway. But I did mark one lately-opened bloom,
Wherefrom arose a visible perfume That wrapped me in a cloud of dainty gloom. And rose an odor by a spirit haunted And drew me upward with a speed enchanted

A Brief Sketch of Lanier's Life (1842-1881)
idney Lanier has so recently passed from us that it seems desirable briefly to recount the chief incidents of his life. This task is much lightened by Dr. Wm. Hayes Ward's `Memorial',* upon which, as stated in the Preface, is based this section of my essay. Born at Macon, Ga., February 3, 1842, Sidney Lanier came of a family noted for their love and cultivation of the fine arts. From the time of Queen Elizabeth to the Restoration, several of his paternal ancestors were connected with the English court as musical composers and as painters. The father of the poet, however, Robert S. Lanier, was a most industrious lawyer, who, after a lingering illness of three years, recently** answered `Adsum' to the summons of the supreme tribunal. The poet's mother, Mary Anderson, a Virginian of Scotch descent, likewise sprang from a family distinguished for their love of oratory, music, and poetry.

Welcome to
Bibb County, Georgia
The 54th county formed in Georgia, created in 1822 from part of Houston County , was Bibb. It was so named for Dr. William Wyatt Bibb, who lived in Elbert County, and served in the US House of Representatives as well as the US Senate. In 1816, he was appointed governor of the Territory of Alabama and became the first elected governor of that state. The county has two incorporated municipalities: Macon, the county seat, and Payne City. Macon, named after Senator Nathaniel Macon of North Carolina, was incorporated in 1823. North Carolina was the home state of most of the early white settlers in the area. Macon's City Hall served as the temporary state capitol from November, 1864 to March, 1865. Two notable Georgians from Bibb County are Sidney Clopton Lanier (1842-1881), poet, author, and musician, and the late Otis Redding, famous for "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay." Macon is also home to Wesleyan College, founded in 1836 as the Georgia Female College. It was the first college in the world chartered to grant degrees to women. Mercer University is also located in Macon.

The Passion of the Beast
Boston: The Stratford Co., 1928. 30611; PQ3; GL; TDB. An unusual novel, about the strange hold a gorilla exerts on an aristocratic French family. In Paris, William St. Clair meets Armand Dumesnil, who presently asks the American to accompany him to his family estate. There St. Clair meets Armand's beautiful sister, Yvonne, and learns that there is some mystery surrounding the family. He comes to learn that their father, Hippolyte Dumesnil, while on safari, had seen a female gorilla and her children killed by his bearers. He prevented them from killing her mate, whom he captured and named Melek. Melek soon thereafter saved Dumesnil's life, and was brought to live on the family estate. Dumesnil had come to believe that the lives of his own children, Armand and Yvonne, were owed to the ape, who proved to be extremely jealous of any attentions to Yvonne.
