MOTHER RAGE: THEORY AND PRACTICE
BY ANNE LAMOTT I just wanted to thank Anne Lamott for her column on mother rage. I cried and laughed (mostly laughed) as I read about myself as a mother. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Jennifer Sinclair
Wichita, Kan. I loved Annie Lamott's article. As a mother of two children, both under 3, it rang so true. It was great to read about feelings and emotions that I have felt so many times but could never express so eloquently. Chesca Colloredo-Mansfeld I t's a pity no one wrote this article 20 years ago, so that Anne Lamott might have been able to refer to it before becoming pregnant. She might be a happier, less resentful person. I suspect at this point the best thing would be a nanny. Darren Barefoot W hen Anne Lamott talks of this, she speaks for all mothers as far as I'm concerned. I'm a single mother with four kids, and sometimes I think I am a crazy woman. Three of my kids are teenagers. (If you think little kids drive you crazy, it's nothing compared to teenagers!) My youngest one is 6 years old. I like to think of myself as a "good" mother, but sometimes I wonder! First of all, when I come home from work and find the house totally trashed, and the teenagers out on the back patio smoking cigarettes, I go into a rage! I am suddenly this madwoman, yelling and ranting and raving and kicking all "extra" children out of my house. Nobody at work would believe it if they saw me like this! My younger son's therapist says that the key to parenting teenagers is to remain calm at all times. Ha! Like I can stay calm when my kids tell me I'm dumb and I don't know anything.

Technology in the Fast Lane
Inc. Tecnology's editor offers some comments on technology and an overview of this issue of the magazine. From: Inc. Magazine, Jun 1996 By: David H. Freedman I was driving home along one of Boston's famously clogged arteries recently, my right hand clutching a cellular phone, my left hand typing into the notebook computer open on my lap. Is this wise? I asked myself. More to the point, I thought, do I really need both knees to steer? And if, as I suspect, I don't, is there some sort of telecommunications or information-processing device that I can work with a free knee?

All right. Never mind. Forget I asked. Driving and computing clearly don't mix. I promise never to do it again. It's just that sometimes I'm suddenly possessed by a deep fear of missing out on a technological innovation that would, if I had it, make my life easier or more productive. Is it just me? Don't you ever wonder if somewhere out there there's an up-and-coming software tool a technological sleeper that could have a real impact on your business? Well, we have a candidate for you to consider: the geographic information system. A GIS does for locational data what a spreadsheet does for financial data. To find out why more and more growing businesses are turning to a GIS to get closer to customers, in more ways than one.

BOWERS 17053 4TH NE SEATTLE, WA 98155 E-MAIL: hbowers472@aol.com / 105145.1401@compuserve.com ACKNOWLEDGMENTS These past few months have been very productive for the Lane Descendant Newsletter. The number of Lane Researchers has increased dramatically, thanks to the internet. For those of you who have Lane's that are from Scotland or Ireland you will be interested in the following information. Recently I went to a Scotland Highland Games at Enumclaw, Wa. I found a clan called MacLaines, which also includes the names Lane, Layne, Laine and Lain. The Lane's date back to about 900AD in Scotland. To join or find out more about this clan write to Clan MacLaine of Lochbui; 720 E. Maple, Pasco, Wa. 99301. They may also be reached at their web site: http://www.nuro.bc.ca./local/celtic/maclaine.htm. Membership is $15.00 a year. For those of you with the McKinnie surname your clans are: MacKenzie and MacKinnon. Depending if the family was in the highlands or lowlands would determine which clan they belonged to. For the MacKenzie clan write to: Clan MacKenzie Society; 4522 Bond Lane, Oviedo, FL. 32765-9600. I would like to give special thanks to Barb Johnson of Seattle, Wa. for promoting the LANE Newsletter on CompuServe, a network on the internet, and also for all her help with research work. I would also like to thank Janice Robin Ellis, JM Malone, Nancy Rutherford, and all others who have helped in passing on Lane information they have come across in there own research, it is greatly appreciated.

Director: Adrian Lyne Stars: Diane Lane Richard Gere Olivier Martinez Movie: DVD: Overall: WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Hot woman (Lane) meets young French stud with facial stubble (Martinez), fornicates with him relentlessly, and therein, cheats on her husband (Gere) and lies to her child. The psychological and tragic consequences of her actions ensues. IS IT A GOOD MOVIE? Adrian Lyne has tackled steamy sex (NINE AND A HALF WEEKS), adultery (FATAL ATTRACTION) and female derrieres (FLASHDANCE) in his previous films, but in my opinion, this has got to be his most mature picture to date regarding those themes. Based on the French film "LA FEMME INFIDELE" (1969), Unfaithful is a gripping character study that refreshingly covers adultery, and most of its emotional layers, from a female perspective. What really hooked me was that Diane Lane’s character is actually a happily married woman, but still cheats on her man. I found it fascinating to try to grasp the psychological and primal motivations for her actions. Oh, why do we human beings have to be so complicated, horny and impulsive? Visually, Lyne paints a grim yet beautiful picture while dipping it in the occasional symbolism. Lyne’s eye is more restrained than usual as he addresses his subject matter in an honest manner. Acting wise, props go out to Diane Lane, who carries the movie and gives her best performance to date. Is that Oscar knocking? I think so. Richard Gere also delivers, playing against type (finally!) and reminding us that yes, he still knows how to act when Winona Ryder isn’t around to drag his performance into the gutter. Now, even though the flick does eventually take a “mainstream” turn, it handles the twist with its two feet firmly planted in reality and does eventually end in a very unorthodox way (I loved the ending). So if you’re looking for commercial fluff...look elsewhere, but if you're in the mood for a more adult and thought-provoking type of picture that still retains the sexiness (and nudity) of Lyne’s previous films…this one's for you.
