NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION ECOSYSTEM MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) does not engage in ecosystem management in the strictest sense. NASA does manage the lands incorporated within the 9 NASA Centers throughout the U.S. There is no broad policy or mission statement concerning ecosystem management. Programs and policies, for the most part, are developed by the individual field centers. NASA also conducts both basic and applied research relevant to ecosystem management. This research is directed toward understanding ecosystem processes, monitoring land cover, and understanding the impacts of NASA land usage (e.g., launches and testing of aerospace equipment) on their surrounding ecosystems. The MTPE program is developing a series of satellites to carry Earth remote sensing instruments that will not only advance the U.S. Global Change Research Program's goals and objectives centered around developing a predictive understanding of how the Earth functions as a system, but also provide the next generation of satellite observations for resource and ecosystem managers. They will provide continuity with past satellite data sets while improving data quality and calibration and will also offer completely new types of observations.

Southwest U.S. Change Detection Images from the EROS Data Center
Reno and Lake Tahoe, Nevada
by Kristi Sayler, U.S. Geological Survey A matched pair of satellite images from different years can be processed into a new change-detection image, which shows areas of increased or decreased brightness, greenness, or wetness. These images can be used to monitor landscape changes. These images of the Reno-Lake Tahoe area of Nevada, show some effects of natural processes on the landscape:
Burn area
Extensive changes resulting from forest fires can be observed in satellite images. Changes in greenness, displayed here as a dark blue color, show an area of vegetation which has become blackened from burning.
Conifer mortality
Scientists at Boston University have made ground measurements to quantify the decrease in the forest canopy as a result of drought. The sustained drought conditions weakened the trees and made them more susceptible to insect attacks. Satellite images can be used to estimate the geographic extent of the damaged area.
Forest clear-cutting
Droughts increase the geographic extent of exposed lakebeds, where new vegetation can be seen using satellite images. Changes in land use or timber harvesting activities can also be seen in this forested area.

by Kristi Sayler, U.S. Geological Survey A matched pair of satellite images from different years can be processed into a new change-detection image, which shows areas of increased or decreased brightness, greenness, or wetness. These images can be used to monitor landscape changes. These images of Las Vegas, Nevada, show some effects of human activities on the landscape:
Surface disturbance
Increased surface brightness may indicate surface disturbance due to construction or excavations for construction including road resurfacing or paving.
Urban expansion
The increasing urbanization in the Southwest is manifest through increases in both brightness and greenness. These increases result, respectively, from both additional housing and development and expansion of golf courses.
Quarry operations and reservoir change
Increased surface brightness may result from expansion of gravel or rock quarry operations. As reservoirs are filled, brightness and greenness decrease in the reservoir proper and brightness increases around the outside of the reservoir.

How these images were produced
The change detection contained in the following pages is done using Landsat multispectral scanner (MSS) and thematic mapper (TM) data to identify and characterize landscape change. The change analysis procedure involves:

Study: forest survival in a New Zealand dairy farm landscape Native Forest Action Most New Zealanders cannot believe that our native forest are being logged. But sadly they are. A small state-owned-enterprise called Timberlands West Coast is being allowed to plunder priceless rimu and beech forests all over the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. Timberlands is currently pushing more logging roads through Okarito forest.
Native Forest Action is committed to halting this outrageous destruction primarily by campaigning to stop logging of publicly-owned native forests by the SOE Timberlands West Coast Ltd since 1995 (including the "overcut" in the Buller, the massive proposed beech scheme, and the so-called "sustainable" logging of the Saltwater and Okarito rimu forests). Lansat Pathfinder Project
    Overview
The NASA Landsat Pathfinder Project is an endeavor to quantify and study global deforestation, especially deforestation of tropical rainforests. This project is part of both NASA's Mission to Planet Earth Program and the Earth Observing System Data and Information System, a joint global monitoring system and data interpreting system which collects data and forecasts trends in global physical characteristics such as climate, greenhouse gases, land use, and the hydrologic cycle. The Earth Observing System has been monitoring the earth by satellite for over twenty years. The data found is compared to estimate the change in environmental conditions. Scientists can use this information to determine where critical sources of degradation occur. Using results of the scientist's findings, governments and NGO's can prioritize their policies and objectives to focus both on areas of crisis and areas in which their energy will be most effective. *Most of my information was derived from the extensive information available in the NASA Landsat Pathfinder Project page and the related Earth Observing System page.

Owner National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Organisation NASA Abstract The composition of the global atmosphere has changed during this century because of human activities. Climate models now predict a significant global warming in response to the rising concentrations of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. However, confidence in these predictions is low because of significant uncertainties in the modeled radiative effects of aerosols (small suspended particles) and clouds. Current predictive capabilities must be improved to enable policy makers to reach balanced decisions on mitigation strategies. CALIPSO was selected as an Earth System Science Pathfinder satellite mission in December 1998 to address the role of clouds and aerosols in the Earth's radiation budget.
