Walter Savage Landor
Profile
Poet, classicist and essayist. Born at Ipsley Court, Warwick , the son of a Physician. He went to Rugby School then on to Trinity College, Oxford, but was sent down in 1794. The following year he published his first collection, Poems (1795). He lived abroad from 1814, not returning to England until 1835. His strong views and quick temper led him into many disputes and following a potential law suit he spent the remainder of his life, from 1858, on the continent, particularly Florence. He is now remembered more for his prose than his poetry, his best known work being Imaginary conversations of literary men and statesmen (1824-1829), a series of dramatic dialogues. There is a commemorative plaque to the author in the church at Bishop's Tachbrook , Warwickshire.

Landor, Walter Savage (17751864), English writer, eldest son of Walter Landor and his wife Elizabeth Savage, was born at \Varwick on the 3oth of January 1775.

    WALTER SAVAGE LANDOR
LANDOR, WALTER SAVAGE In May 1811 Landor had suddenly married N iss Julia Thuillier, with whose looks he had fallen in love at first sight in a ball-room at Bath; and in June they settled for a while at Llanthony Abbey in Monmouthshire, from whence he was worried in three years time by the combined vexation of neighbors and tenants, lawyers and lords-lieutenant; not before much toil and money had been nobly wasted on attempts to improve the sterility of the land, to relieve the wretchedness and raise the condition of tIe peasantry. He left England for France at first, but after a brief residence at Tours took up his abode for three years at Como; and three more wandering years he passed, says his biographer, between Pisa and Pistoja, before he pitched his tent in Florence in 1821. (A. C. S.) BIBLI0GRAP1IY.See The Works and Life of Walter Savage Landor (8 vols., 1846), the life being the work of John Forster. Another edition of his works (I89f1893), edited by C. G. Crump, comprises Imaginary Conversations, Poems, Dialogues in Verse and Epigrams and The Longer Prose Wor4s. His Letters and other Unpublished Writings were edited by Mr Stephen Wheeler (1897). There are many volumes of selections from his works, notably one (1882) for the Golden Treasury series, edited by Sidney Colvin, who also contributed the monograph on Landor (1881) in the English Men of Letters series. A bibliography of his works, many of which are very rare, is included in Sir Leslie Stephens article on Landor in the Dictionary of National Biography (vol. xxxii., 1892). (M. Ba.)

Truth, like the juice of a poppy, in small quantities calms men; in larger, heats and irritates them and is attended by fatal consequences in its excess. I never did a single wise thing in the whole course of my existence, although I have written many which have been thought so. Men, like nails, lose their usefulness when they lose direction and begin to bend. Heat and animosity, contest and conflict, may sharpen the wits, although they rarely do; they never strengthen the understanding, clear the perspicacity, guide the judgment, or improve the heart.

    Walter Savage Landor
Walter Savage Landor was born at Ipsley Court and was the son of a doctor. He was educated at Rugby and at Trinity College, Oxford, from which he was sent down in 1794. In 1811 he married Julia Thuillier and three years later moved to Italy, where he lived for some 20 years. After separating from his wife he returned to England and lived in Bath from 1838 to 1858 but spent his last few years in Florence, moving there after a libel action arising from one of his works. A distinguished prose writer, Landor wrote poetry throughout his life, his first work Gebit being published in 1798. Count Julian , a tragedy, was published in 1812 and the Hellenics in 1846/47. He also wrote numerous shorter poems, the most celebrated of which are Ianthe Dirce Rose Aylmer Mother, I cannot mind my wheel , and The Maid's Lament Cursed throughout his life with an irascible, contentious nature, Landor's poetry contains much passion and nostalgia, perhaps a reflection of his own personal regrets. His work was much admired by Robert Browning who helped him in his latter years.
