Introduction SOPAC provides ongoing infrastructure support for SCEC-related geodetic studies of crustal deformation in southern California under the umbrella of the Southern California Integrated GPS Network (SCIGN). We have primary responsibility for archiving all continuous GPS data in southern California ( Figure 1 ), and parallel responsibility (with JPL) for generating daily position time series. We are responsible for maintaining SCIGN sites in Imperial, Orange, Riverside, San Bernadino, and San Diego Counties. YB is currently chairman of the SCIGN Coordinating Board and Executive Committee. Overall SCIGN progress is provided in detail in 1997 reports to the William M. Keck Foundation and to NSF, available from SCEC. Accomplishments Geodetic time series.

April 16, 2000 First take a look at an animation of Landers: Animate it! Animation of dynamic Landers rupture
Introduction The 28 June 1992 Landers earthquake is one of the largest, well-recorded earthquakes in California. The high quality and variety of data provided an unprecedented opportunity to model this event. For example, Wald and Heaton (1994) combined geodetic data with seismic data to invert a distributed fault model and to retrieve the kinematic rupture history. Cohee and Beroza (1994) modeled the rupture history using empirical Green's function. Cotton and Campillo (1995) used frequency domain inversion of strong motions in order to constrain the space-time dependence of slip on the fault. Hernandez et al (1999) inverted a set of interferometric data, Global Positioning System measurements and strong motion data. Figure 1: Landers fault (80 km long, and extending from the surface to a depth of 15 km) is divided into 3 segments, the Landers Johnson Valley segment to the South where the hypocenter (star) is located, the Homestead Valley segment in the central part of the fault, and the Camp Rock Emerson Valley segment to the North.

Jewish Telegraphic Agency NEW YORK Ann Landers, who died Saturday at the age of 83, was a Jewish mother who "really wanted to make things better," her daughter said. Ann Landers, whose real name was Esther "Eppie" Lederer, wrote the most widely syndicated advice column in the world for more than 40 years and felt a strong connection to the Jewish faith. "I am very much aware of my Jewishness," she once said, "I was brought up to be proud of my Jewishness. I've always felt I've been blessed. "I'm not devout, but I do light Sabbath candles every Friday at sundown and say a Hebrew prayer. I haven't missed Yom Kippur service since I was 18. I feel close to my God, I am a religious person," Lederer said. She died in her home outside of Chicago of multiple myeloma, a cancer of the bone marrow, a disease she was diagnosed with in January. One of a pair of advice-giving twins her sister, Pauline, is the columnist known as "Dear Abby" Lederer was born in Sioux City, Iowa, in 1918. Her father immigrated to the United States from Russia in 1908. She married Budget-Rent-A-Car corporation founder Jules Lederer and moved to Eau Claire, Wis. in 1939, where she pursued an interest in politics and was elected chair of the county's Democratic Party.
