Mars race begins a search for life
... Last ship joins Mars armada PASADENA, California (AP) The prospect of life on Mars has charged the public imagination for more than a century, ever since astronomers first spied what they thought were canals dug to irrigate the planet's ruddy surface. But after spacecraft and Earth-based telescopes began taking a closer look at the planet, evidence of the canals and the Martians who presumably created them quickly vanished. Instead, the scrutiny showed Mars to be a dusty, frigid world, shrouded by an atmosphere too thin to breathe, bombarded with radiation and largely dry beyond the ice that caps its poles. It seemed altogether hostile to life as we know it.

Seismological Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley Abstract. The proximity in time (~7 years) and space (~20 km) between the 1992 M =7.3 Landers earthquake and the 1999 M =7.1 Hector Mine event suggests a possible link between the quakes. We thus calculated the static stress changes following the 1992 Joshua Tree/Landers/Big Bear earthquake sequence on the 1999 M M =7.1 earthquake.
The October 16, 1999 M =7.1 Hector Mine earthquake occurred about 20 km northeast of the 1992 M =7.3 Landers earthquake in southern California (Plate 1). The proximity of the two ruptures raises the question whether the Hector Mine quake was advanced by static stress changes [e.g., Harris , 1998, and references contained therein] caused by the 1992 Joshua Tree/Landers/Big Bear earthquake sequence. We investigate the relationship between these earthquakes by using previously defined slip models for the Landers sequence [e.g., Wald and Heaton Hudnut et al.

Handbook of Capillary Electrophoresis, 2nd edition
James P. Landers, editor
A bestseller
"This handbook represents a comprehenwsive and up-to-date review of the field. It is a valuable reference for chemists and biological scientists alike." Book Review Journal
Like its highly successful first edition, this fully updated second edition covers all areas of interest in the field of capillary electrophoresis (CE). A relatively new technology, CE is fast becoming a principle method for studying physicochemical properties of proteins, peptides, and other macromolecules. New information has been discovered at an incredible rate since the publication of the first edition of this Handbook. Keep up with all the developments in this growing field with the Second Edition-a complete guide to the fundamentals of CE and the latest research. Where applicable, the 30 chapters provide basic underlying theories as well as application-oriented aspects of each technique. It also contains: 13 completely new chapters; offers practice-oriented presentation; provides more than 400 figures and 65 tables for rapid access to data and ease in understanding techiques. The Handbook of Capillary Electrophoresis, Second Edition, pulls together diverse areas and applications of CE, resulting in an excellent tool for scientists involved in biotechnology and clinical chemistry, as well as the pharmaceutical, bioscience, chemical, and instrument-manufacturing industries. With an applications-oriented focus, the handbook is also a superb manual for workshops, seminars, and graduate courses in separation science.

The movie basically shows you the process of an audition, yet with a twist. It shows the hardships, and perserverance of the people who try out. It shows that there is so much more than what one would expect.

Old Data Holds New Hope for Life on Mars

WASHINGTON - Where there's rhythm, can there be martian life? A scientist believes he sees tell-tale signs of microbes on Mars hiding in experiment results gathered nearly 25 years ago. That prospect has kick-started a NASA restoration plan for data gleaned by two Viking Mars landers that touched down on the red planet in 1976. The planet snooping duo were specially equipped to search for martian biology. This is all good news for Joseph Miller, a specialist in circadian rhythms. Working in the Dept. of Pharmacology at Texas Tech Univ. Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, Texas, he contends that data from a Viking biological experiment shows periodicity - a circadian rhythm that only life produces. "This may be the strongest evidence for biology on Mars. It was completely missed by everybody," Miller told SPACE.com. Biological clock-watching The rhythm of various metabolic activities of plants and animals is controlled by an intrinsic mechanism called a biological clock. Virtually all species of plants and animals on Earth run on a 24-hour, day-night cycle called circadian rhythm. More Stories

The Surveyor probes were the first U.S. spacecraft to land safely on the Moon. The images above show the Surveyor spacecraft at the beach and a view of the footpad of Surveyor 5. The trench to the right of the footpad was formed during the landing. The main objectives of the Surveyors were to obtain close-up images of the lunar surface and to determine if the terrain was safe for manned landings. Each Surveyor was equipped with a television camera. In addition, Surveyors 3 and 7 each carried a soil mechanics surface sampler scoop which dug trenches and was used for soil mechanics tests and Surveyors 5, 6, and 7 had magnets attached to the footpads and an alpha scattering instrument for chemical analysis of the lunar material.

A curvaceous blonde goes for a skinnydip amidst the lapping waves on Californias shores. Up in her beach house, a man is erasing evidence which could convict him of this womans murder, and is instead erecting what looks like evidence of a suicide scene. Down on the beach a woman screams as she sees the dead body of a beautiful drowned woman. This woman is Hollywood bombshell Billie Blaine, and twenty-seven years after her tragic murder, people still believe the star took her own life.
Twenty-seven years later, 1989, journalist Angela Reid is going through some problems of her own. The editor for "Hollywood Beat", the magazine she writes for, is nagging her about not being unbiased enough in her articles, and the apartment she lives in is being remodeled, causing so much noise she can hardly hear herself think.
All of a sudden, she has an idea. Her aunt Sarah has a beach house in Malibu that used to belong to Angelas famous late aunt Billie Blaine. Her aunt has been unable to sell the house because there are rumors it's haunted by the ghost of a famous sex goddess, but Angela thinks thats ridiculous. I mean, ghosts? Give me a break.
