85. Book Review: The Whole Internet User's Guide & Catalog By Ed Krol
The Whole Internet User s Guide Catalog by Ed Krol. What made Ed Krol s TheWhole Internet User s Guide Catalog inevitable was this very diversity.
http://www.law.warwick.ac.uk/ltj/2-2o.html
Review by Paul A Glister (Reprinted with permission of CompuServe Magazine, published by CompuServe Incorporated.) Using the Internet makes me feel I've entered a science fiction movie. A few keystrokes can rocket me from a computer in North Carolina to CERN, the European Particle Physics Laboratory in Switzerland. There I can use a search tool called World Wide Web to connect to other resources worldwide, searching out information ranging from weather forecasts to library catalogs, from the minutes of high-tech meetings to the lyrics of popular songs. What made Ed Krol's "The Whole Internet User's Guide & Catalog" inevitable was this very diversity. The Internet is so big that no one can give you a good definition of it. Let's say it's a meta-network, a network of networks. More than 5,000 networks currently are involved, and user estimates range as high as ten million people worldwide. With roots in military research but now wide open to anyone with a PC, the Internet is an explorer's dream. But astoundingly, no single book has explained it well until Krol's, and another recent title, Tracy LaQuey and Jeanne C. Ryer's "The Internet Companion" (Addison-Wesley, 1992). Clearly, we owe Ed Krol quite a debt, and anyone with serious plans for tapping the Internet should have a copy of his book on the shelf. The best aspect of this book is that it offers a hands-on approach to Internet connectivity. Krol doesn't just rhapsodize about the wonders of Internet resources - he takes you to them by providing directions on how to get there. The last section of his book, in fact, is a collection of Internet destinations arranged alphabetically. It's not complete - on the ever-changing Internet, what could be? - but it's a useful directory.

Recommended ISBN: Publisher: O'Reilly Pages: Price: ISBN: Publisher: Addison-Wesley Pages: Price: Connecting to the Internet by Susan Estrada ISBN: Publisher: O'Reilly Pages: Price: Categories: internet Reviewed by Francis Glassborow in C Vu 6-6 (Sep 1994) Books on Internet are a growth industry, reviewing just one or two leaves me open to the accusation of bias. Doing full reviews on all that cross my desk would not be appropriate to C Vu. When you first decide to connect to the Internet you have some important decisions to make. Of course you may simply take the first choice offered to you, or latch on to whatever service was recently reviewed in a newspaper or magazine that you read. If you do this you may be lucky but you may find was a better option several months later. Change at that stage can be awkward if you have already established an e-mail address with a circle of correspondents. Making the wrong choice can also involve unnecessary expense. Connecting to the Internet is aimed at providing you some independent information to help you arrive at your decision rather than relying on the biases of your next door neighbours enthusiastic teenage 'expert'. If you have someone you can trust to give you good advice (test question is whether they spend time trying to determine your needs rather than just suggesting that you use the same service provider that they do) you may not need this book.

Krol retired in April after 29 years at the UI. "People would always ask, ‘Well, what are you going to do when you retire?’ " said Ed Krol, former assistant director of Campus Information Technologies and Educational Services (CITES). "And I didn’t have anything to do. So, finally, I sort of thought, ‘Well, I really like France.’ " So less than 24 hours after his April 30 retirement, Ed Krol and his wife, Margaret, were aboard a plane to Paris. After a five-day stay, Margaret, who is assistant vice president of Administrative Information Technology Services, returned to the states, and Ed headed for the shores of the Mediterranean for a leisurely week in Corsica.

91. Welcome To My Home On The Web
Weblog, profile, resume, and favorite links.
http://www.contrib.andrew.cmu.edu/~akrol
Welcome to my website! The main page that you are reading right now is where you'll find news (posted as soon as possible, newest items at the top) as well as any information that doesn't fall cleanly under the other categories (contact, bio, etc). Enjoy! As you can probably see by the dates on the "news" items, my site's been rather neglected the last several months. After graduation this May, however, I plan on retooling the entire site by adding significantly more content and updating the interface. Until then, I'm gonna be pretty busy with final projects, exams, and the like.
I have a job :) I'll be working for Argon Engineering, a Virginia defense contractor, as Software Engineer. It sounds like it'll be a really cool place to be.
HELP WITH THE TRAGEDY IN NYC and DC! How? Donate blood to the Red Cross. You can find out where to donate (and if you're eligible) by calling 1-800-GIVE-LIFE. You can also donate money to the Red Cross in three ways:

DO YOU KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT THE ATTACKS? The FBI is asking that anyone with information about the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Towers or the Pentagon call their toll free number: 1-866-483-5137.
Hopefully I'll get a chance to update the site a bit, but considering how busy I am with school, there probably won't be much new for a couple weeks at least.

RFC 1855 myname@company.com . The answer to the second question is usually something like " http://www.newspaper.com ". What do these answers mean? E-MAIL ADDRESS As stated previously an e-mail address is something like " myname@company.com http://www.newspaper.com ". This address also consists of two parts. In this case the two parts are separated by the "//". The portion to the left means find the world wide web service that is located at the computer identified to the right of the "//". The portion to the right is the name of the computer that is providing the world wide web service. Its name is composed of parts that are similar to those described for the name of an email computer. Sometimes the portion on the right contains additional information that identifies a particular document at the web site. For example, http://www.newspaper.com/sports/article1.html

Postel@ISI.EDU ). He acts as a referee for the proposal. It is then commented upon by all those wishing to take part in the discussion (electronically of course). It may go through multiple revisions. Should it be generally accepted as a good idea, it will be assigned a number and filed with the RFCs. There are two independent categorizations of protocols. The first is the state of standardization which is one of "standard", "draft standard", "proposed", "experimental", or "historic". The second is the status of this protocol which is one of "required", "recommended", "elective", or "not recommended". One could expect a particular protocol to move along the scale of status from elective to required at the same time as it moves along the scale of standardization from proposed to standard. A Required Standard protocol (e.g., RFC-791 , The Internet Protocol) must be implemented on any host connected to the Internet. Recommended Standard protocols are generally implemented by network hosts. Lack of them does not preclude access to the Internet, but may impact its usability.

Only through the occupation of territory by ground forces can victory be achieved. Yet in 1940 a battle raged over the skies of England as the Royal Air Force sought to defeat the German Luftwaffe. The prize was Britain, for if the battle in the air were lost then Operation Sealion (the seaborne invasion) would commence. In this case airpower alone did indeed win a battle, and had a profound effect on the war.
