Status of this Memo
This memo provides information for the Internet community. It does not specify an Internet standard. Distribution of this memo is unlimited.
Abstract
This FYI RFC answers the question, "What is the Internet?" and is produced by the User Services Working Group of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). Containing a modified chapter from Ed Krol's 1992 book, "The Whole Internet User's Guide and Catalog," the paper covers the Internet's definition, history, administration, protocols, financing, and current issues such as growth, commercialization, and privatization.
Introduction
A commonly asked question is "What is the Internet?" The reason such a question gets asked so often is because there's no agreed upon answer that neatly sums up the Internet. The Internet can be thought about in relation to its common protocols, as a physical collection routers and circuits, as a set of shared resources, or even as an attitude about interconnecting and intercommunication. Some common definitions given in the past include:
  • a network of networks based on the TCP/IP protocols

NOTES FROM Dr. ED KROL'S PHILOSOPHY COLLECTION
The Precious Present (Spencer Johnson)
Pain is the difference between what is and what I want it to be. The more insecure you are the less likely you are to . . . . .
admit your faults AND admit your needs. We are not made to do only one thing but rather one thing at a time. ("Plato not Prozac"-Lou Marinoff) The more insecure you are the more defensive you become. It's not what you like or don't like but what's good for you that's important. You cannot report something stolen that you have stolen. Almost getting caught is a better cure than really getting caught. The fear is greater than the punishment. (Garrison Keillor: Prarie Home Companion) Living is an art, not a science. You make it up as you go along. (E. Krol) The future is not planned for but rather prepared for. Ed Krol The older I get the better I was.

1. Teaching style
Lectures
- Lectures start and finish on time. They involve explanations to clarify topics/areas that students have found difficult. They DO NOT cover exactly what is on the exams.
Demonstrations - Demonstrations are few. Instead, the use of computer videos and laser disks with overhead transparencies are used as needed.
Discussions - Portions of various lectures will involve student answers. Individuals are not called on, but rather the class is asked for answers or statements that cover the material of that lecture. Class participation is encouraged.
Hands on - Hands-on is difficult because each session has 56 students.

About Us
Title: Edition: ISBN: Author(s): Ed Krol Publisher: Published: Level: Progressing Beginner to Progressing Intermediate Full synopsis:
As a complete introduction to the Internet, this book covers the basic utilities you use to access the network: mail, telnet, ftp, and news readers. But it also does much more. The Guide pays close attention to several important information servers (Archie, Wais, Gopher) that are, essentially, databases of databases: they help you find what you want among the millions of files and thousands of archives available. There's also coverage of the World Wide Web. We've also included our own database of databases: a resource index that covers a broad selection of several hundred important resources, ranging from the King James Bible to archives for USENET news.
So if you use the Internet for work or for pleasure or if you'd like to, but don't know how you need this book. If you've been around the Net for a few years, you'll still be able to discover resources you didn't know existed. Also includes a pull-out quick-reference card.
Now more comprehensive than ever, here's what you will find in the second edition:

My research group is interested in the properties of lignans and flavonoids. Specifically we seek to understand the underlying chemistry responsible for both their chemopreventive and toxicological properties. Flaxseed lignans are believed to be responsible for a number of beneficial health effects including reduction in LDL cholesterol, mammary and colon cancer and Type II diabetes. We plan to investigate the reactions that mammalian lignans derived from flaxseed undergo during oxidative stress to determine how these lignans contribute to chemoprevention. The lignan NDGA is closely related in structure to the flaxseed lignans, yet NDGA use has been associated with kidney toxicity. Our group will study how the subtle differences in lignan structure can influence the reactivity of these compounds. Published Works: E.S. Krol
