    Paderewski's Manru by Egbert Swayne
    Unquestionably Mr. Paderewski is the most conspicuous and picturesque figure in the musical world, just now. In this respect he forms a comely successor to the late Abbe Liszt, who was nothing if not picturesque. One of the features of the immediate American future of opera will be the production of Paderewski's Manru , which is scheduled to take place early in February, at the Metropolitan Opera House. The piano score of the opera has lately been published by the house of Schirmer, and I have been delighted in reading it through. The conception of the plot is Paderewski's, the design being to afford opportunity for introducing some of those picturesque folk tone types of melody, of which Europe still has several varieties unknown to high art. Fundamental to a correct understanding of the opera, Mr. Krehbiel, the English translator, has prefixed an extract from Mr. C. G. Leland's book, The Gypsies He says: Of the story Mr. Krehbiel speaks as follows:

Le melodie dei neri sono patetiche, tenere, appassionate, malinconiche, solenni, religiose, coraggiose, allegre, ilari, piene di grazia Antonin Dvorak (Nelahozeves, 8 set 1841 - Praga, 1 mag 1904) LA POETICA DEGLI SPIRITUALS L a cultura africana, in genere, è sempre stata profondamente religiosa, ma agli schiavi deportati in America fu vietata ogni possibilità di professare la propria religione. Essi si aggrapparono ben presto perciò al Cristianesimo , la religione dei bianchi, sia perché ne furono costretti, ma anche per un grande senso di rispetto e sottomissione che essi avevano per le divinità dei conquistatori. I l Cristianesimo ha avuto un ruolo decisivo quanto ambiguo nella storia culturale dei neri d'America, che ricercarono nella religione dei padroni i motivi del loro asservimento , trovandone giustificazione in una sorta di "maledizione divina" per cui essi stessi paragonarono la loro propria storia a quella del popolo ebraico.
